First Look: Morrison's WONDER WOMAN: EARTH ONE and MULTIVERSITY

Get a peek at some images of Wonder Woman in Grant Morrison's upcoming Wonder Woman OGN.

We've seen SUPERMAN: EARTH ONE and BATMAN: EARTH ONE, and now we get our very first peek at WONDER WOMAN: EARTH ONE by Grant Morrison.

No Caption Provided

There has been plenty of talk about this particular project over the last few years or so and now we have our first real glimpse at artist Yanick Paquette's work on WONDER WOMAN: EARTH ONE. Like the SUPERMAN and BATMAN original graphic novels that were previously released, this Wonder Woman story will take place outside of continuity and will consist of approximately 120 pages. While we don't know much about the upcoming project, we do know that it will focus on both Diana and her mother, Queen Hippolyta. The image depicts Queen Hippolyta killing Hercules in a two page spread, and like the previous OGN's, this one will also be an origin story of sorts.

No Caption Provided

The second image that was released on Zap2It earlier today is artist Cameron Stewart's work on MULTIVERSITY which is a series also being written by Grant Morrison that will consist of nine issues and will have Morrison exploring DC's multiple universes. We previously mentioned some news regarding Morrison's MULTIVERSITY project back in October when DC unveiled some pages for the series by artist Frank Quitely. Now we got a glimpse of some penciled pages by Cameron Stewart who will also be joining Morrison on the project. MULTIVERSITY is scheduled to be released sometime later this year. The image above is a page taken from the issue titled 'Thunderworld' that will center around Captain Marvel's character. This particular issue, according to Morrison, will be all-ages friendly.

What do you think of Morrison's two upcoming projects? Are you looking forward to his MULTIVERSITY series? What do you want to see in his Wonder Woman OGN?

Wow, finally. I'd completely forgotten about both projects after all this while.

I hope Morrison can do to Wonder Woman what he did for Superman in All-Star Superman. If he can create a timeless epic with it. All-Star was what made me a Superman fan in the first place, and I'm hoping this might do the trick for Diana.

Haven't heard about anything from Multiversity since those Quitely pencils of Ted Kord and the Question surfaced. Really looking forward to this one as much as Trinity War.

I have been looking forward to both projects since they were announced. That page from Wonder Woman looks like a twist on the George Perez run.

This is the first Earth One graphic novel I'm actually looking forward to and considering buying. Morrison's plans to inject the Golden Age virility and sexual libido back into Wonder Woman is an intriguing one to say the least. If there's anyone I trust to write an E1 graphic novel, it's Grant Morrison. Paquette's artwork looks glorious too.

"Multiversity" is a nine-issue series -- book-ended by two more issues -- exploring the DC Multiverse, each issue telling a story about a different character from a different Earth. The art below is by Cameron Stewart from the issue titled "Thunderworld," which is obviously the newest incarnation of DC's Earth Fawcett, the Earth based on Captain Marvel and his family. Morrison told Zap2It that this issue is all-ages friendly. Morrison previously discussed "Multiversity" and revealed art from artist Frank Quitely's Earth Charleton issue during last year's MorrisonCon.

http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page=article&id=45413

9 issues means 9 Earths. If there is a Fawcett Earth and a Charlton Earth, the what other Earths have been chosen? And which characters will be at the center of each story?

  • Fawcett (Billy Batson)
  • Charlton (Ted Kord?)
  • Quality (Plastic Man)
  • Wildstorm (Lord Majestros?)
  • Milestone (Virgil Hawkins?)
  • All American (Alan Scott?)
  • National (Uncle Sam?)
  • Hannah Barbera (Apache Chief?)
  • Vertigo (John Constantine?)
  • IPC/Feeltway (???)
  • Prize (Adam Mann?)
  • Centaur (John Aman?)

I don't know what other companies DC has acquired over the years, but this should be interesting.

I'm really looking forward to Wonder Woman Earth One. My only concern is that a lot of the fans all like different interpretations of the character and this could polarize the fanbase even more.

Dwayne McDuffie on Wonder Woman’s detractors #1: “First, Wonder Woman is more of a symbol than a character. Even more so than Superman, if you give her the slightest bit of personality, you’ll grievously offend a significant portion of her fans. More importantly, she’s female. A large percentage of superhero fans just don’t like competent heroines. There’s something about the genre that attracts those kinds of fans. Think about all the people who ‘hate’ Hawkgirl, Wonder Woman, Vixen…even Supergirl. How can anybody hate Supergirl? The male characters, including the ones who aren’t very nice, don’t inspire the ire that even the most likable female characters do.”

Gail Simone on Wonder Woman’s detractors: “It is also a sad fact that a significant number of big name writers don’t care about Diana at all, which baffles me. Great gimmicks, great origin, great character…I don’t get it.”

Dwayne McDuffie on Wonder Woman’s detractors #2: “A lot of that is the same reason, [Gail]. A fair number of guys who write this stuff are either disinterested in women with power, or actively opposed to it. I think you’ve written something about that somewhere?”

Wonder Woman

There will be a lot of people who just want her to be the girlfriend and who can't see her as equal to or stronger than Superman. At the same time, all of her fans want her to be the perfect woman. And what the "perfect woman" is means something different to a lot of different people. It's subjective, but most people don't treat it that way. Just look at people's magazine.

@superdork:

Pax Americana - Charlton Earth heroes as Watchmen

Thunderworld - Captain Marvel Earth

The Just - Young heroes as celebrities.

SOS - Superheroes as pulp heroes

Mastermen - Overman and Freedom Fighters

Earth Prime - This Earth

Along with two bookend chapters (I think featuring President Superman) as well as a source book.

So yeah should be a good read.

@superdork: I don't think each earth will be related to a company, I'm pretty sure he said Earth 23 with the black Superman would be one of them.

I think they both look really cool. When Wonder Woman: Earth One comes out, I'll probably take the opportunity to get the two Superman volumes and the Batman volume. I really like the idea of Earth One. Hopefully they do this for other characters like the Flash, or Green Lantern (I don't care which ones for any of those).

Cant wait for Morrison's take on Wonder Women, l am hoping that when the time comes he will write the Earth One Justice League. It has been a very long 5 year wait for Multiversity, I am looking forward to reading more President Superman. In an interview from sometime ago Morrison talked about a Justice League of the multiverse that is a very interesting idea considering Darkseid is tearing it apart looking for his daughter.

IT's been more than a year since the New 52 started and I STILL think that Hercules should have been Diana's dad. It would have made a ton of sense when you think about it. It would have clicked into place better than Zeus being the dad.

Oh well, I'll use it for my fan fic. X^D
