First Look: MAGNETO #1

Protecting mutants by any means necessary...

No Caption Provided

He was once the deadliest and most feared mutant on the planetā€¦and he will be again! Starting this March, writer Cullen Bunn and artist Gabriel Hernandez Walta weave a new noir/horror thriller featuring Erik Lehnsherr ā€“ known the world over as MAGNETO!

ā€œI think Magneto is definitely an anti-hero,ā€ says series writer Cullen Bunn in an interview with Marvel.com. ā€œHeā€™s fighting for the right thing, but his methods are far too extreme. Heā€™s not above breaking the law, stretching the limits of what is moral and putting evil to work for good.ā€

But Magneto is not the man he once was. And the world is a different, more dangerous place for mutants. Once a member of Cyclopsā€™ team of renegade X-Men, itā€™s time for him to strike out and defend mutantkind on his own terms. Itā€™s time to wage a new kind of war. One that will not only ensure mutant survival, but restore the Master of Magnetism to his former glory! Heā€™s not afraid to get his hands bloody to do itā€¦and heā€™ll prove once and for all why you should tremble at the sound of his name.

The one-man-war for mutantkind starts this March in MAGNETO #1!

Looks like it could be interesting. Magneto is a great character. The art seems a little inconsistent though.

I was very glad to see him recently in Uncanny X-Men but I juste hope he won't become a mass murderer for the sake of it !

But right now, i like the art !!

Not a fan of the art nor 'Neto's new look (the costume and the baldness/scruff) but since I love Erik/Magnus/Magneto (whatever he feels like calling himself today) I'll pick it up.

What's the price? If it's $2.99 I'm totally putting this in my pull list.

Wow I'm actually loving the art in this, it has such a gritty feel. There was a preview in this week's Marvel All-New NOW preview issue that had a couple pages of dialogue. This title's looking badass, I'm excited.

I totally agree with the characterization they give for him here. Magneto is a man who has lived through one holocaust, and he'll be damned if he's just gonna stand by and let another happen. He's a man who's seen the worst humans are capable of (and this is the Marvel Universe, so that's saying something) and will protect his fellow mutants from that to his dying breath by any means necessary. He doesn't enjoy what he does, he simply sees it as necessary. It's survival or extinction. To him, humans have long since lost they're right as the dominant species. They are beyond redemption. (Again, Marvel Universe, so there's a lot of evidence backing him up) And he sees no reason why mutants must suffer from their evil.

As a new reader in all the marvel universe, i personally like the way he is beeing portrayed in the Uncanny X-Men: this incredible force of nature dying to breach and handle things his way, but at the same time, trying to honor a dream of a deceased friend. So we all know that a a book of his own can go hit or miss, so i really hope they don't go and write a thing too far from the persona he is being right now ;) but a good book is a good book, so at the end of day if this is a good magneto book, it will be a good magneto book, even if they make him lose his mind again and have him turn super villain.

But what about some of the actual good humans the person. (I'm not counting corporations or organizations because its consider automatically evil in Marvel logic.) Are you going to condemn them as being pure evil mutants are no better they will kill willingly or with joy like any other recast human. Mutants in truth are basically humans born with powers.

I mean as in all the nameless space-fillers whenever there's big public crowds. Have you never noticed what massive jerks the public of the Marvel Universe are? They turn on everyone at the drop of the hat. No matter how many times the X-Men save the world, no matter how many kittens Spider-Man saves from trees, they're still shunned. Angry mobs massacring innocent children just for being of the same species as people like Sabretooth or Pyro. Individual characters are exceptions, yeah. I don't know if I would go as far as to call them evil, but definitely assholes.

wait is this an origin story that leads up to what we know of him in the MArvelNow universe?!

or is this a solo act already based off of the aftermath of AvX and including Bendis's Magneto from the Uncanny series?

I am not sure about his look - I would much prefer they had kept him like the way he was shown in the last Uncanny X-Men issue. It won't put me off getting this title, though. And those alternate covers are amazing.

The news article mentioning mutant sympathizers getting attacked might be a good indication Magneto is aware not all of humanity should be held accountable but then again, that little rage sequence in the last Uncanny X-Men issue might be proof Erik doesn't make the distinction. I sincerely do not know what's going to happen in this new title.

Magnus has been pushed to his breaking point, he tried doing things the X-Men's way during the Utopia era. It didn't work out for the merry mutants and we had AvX. Then Cyclops' faction of X-Men tried doing the school thing again this time drawing on some of Magneto's older ideas. We had Battle for the Atom and that event showed Magneto that the X-Men way wasn't going to work fast enough for him. Which brings us here where Magneto is doing what ever needs doing for the benefit of mutant kind. Or at least that's what I take away from the last few years of X-books and the preview material for this book. I'm so excited.

I was initially really excited about Magneto getting his own series as he is my single favorite comic book character. However, I am a little less excited now that we're told he is no longer in Uncanny X-men. Why that inbred knuckle dragging Wolverine can be in 10 books a month but Magneto can't be in 2 is a complete joke. Magneto was and is a pretty essential component to the great dynamic in Uncanny. It sucks that the book has to lose that simply because he is getting his own title.

Sold. I love it. Looks like Magneto will be letting loose. I don't know why but lately I've been wanting a protagonist to just have some satisfaction in their life, either through redemption, vengeance or catharsis... especially catharsis.

Glad to see Mags strike out on his own again. I was sick of him as Cyclops' little brown-noser.
