First Look: DAREDEVIL #17 Plus Mike Allred's Return to Marvel

The current Daredevil comic is about to get a whole lot ginchier.

DAREDEVIL has been a great series since the relaunch. That isn't to say it wasn't great before. We've been seeing some pretty stellar runs in the past few years. With Mark Waid taking over the title, he's been treated to a slew of great artists including Paolo Rivera, Marcos Martin and Chris Samnee. Now Eisner winning artist, Mike Allred steps up to the plate to knock another great issue out of the park in issue #17.

If you know me at all, you know I couldn't be more excited to see Allred's return to Marvel, even if for just one issue. Not only do we get Mike Allred back, we also get the amazing colors by his lovely wife Laura Allred.

I hope he isn't being "reinvented", it just looks like a bit of a "lighter" take on Daredevil. I DO appreciate Daredevil being street but to me, his stories have been too dark and dramatic. I like the dramatic stories, but to me, taking an approach that isn't so heavy handed is welcome to me, at least. We aren't even certain if that will be the case, actually, but I am really commenting how much I like the art style of Allred and the approach here. Even if it is temporary, it is simply, that, a welcome "break" so to speak.

@Jonny_Anonymous: I understand and agree about those characters. However, Daredevil, to me, doesn't always need to be so dark and gritty all the time. Pretty much what I said to VyseCarma is my response to you. Believe me, I don't like it when Moonie and Batman are written and illustrated in a "lighter" vein. Punisher is a bit of and oddball to a degree, being a bit out of place because he kills so often but having said that, I do agree with you 100%, he also shouldn't be portrayed any less gritty nor dark.

It is just Daredevil, I think, writing his stories and art in a manner that isn't so heavy handed is a nice change. Let's just assume this will be temporary, and that DD will probably return to his "dark roots". For now, I like this "new" look and am interested in it.

I really wanna get this issue too, especially since from what I'm hearing that it is a stand alone issue. Then again, anything Michael Allred I shall get.

Cover doesn't look great (why is his right thigh half the size of his left thigh?) but the pages look pretty cool.

Looking forward to it!

@Duke_Nasty: Actually, I think the Silver Age was even before that. I've always operated under the assumption that it started when DC reintroduced the Flash (Barry Allen) back in 1956.

Mmm.... it's the first time I see Mike Allreds job..... and I'm not sure if I dig it...... looks a bit forced, you know it's a comic book, this it's all about motion, action and all that kind of stuff , this just feel too stuck too still you see the image and say "Mmm... this doesn't looks like there's movement"

Why does Daredevil always have to be "dark" all the time? He can be gritty and street but doesn't necessarily have to be visually grim nor do the stories have to be in the same vein all the time.

That's what I've always thought

The same reason Batman, Moon Knight, Punisher and Ghost Rider are dark. To take that away from the character is to takeaway what separates the character from all the other generic superheros.

@Decept-O: Why reinvent a character if you're going to change change them? It just doesn't fit with today's style of comics, which almost all have darker feels to them.

@VioletPhoenix: I think you're thinking Golden Age-y (When comics started) Silver age is 70-90's we're currently in the bronze age which they tried to rename The Age of Heroes 'cause bronze age means it sucks

And Dan Slott says (on facebook) it is one of the best comics and has "one of the GREATEST Daredevil sequences in it of ALL TIME!" Can't wait.

I quite like it. It's the colours I'm not keen on. A bit too bright and bouncy if you catch my drift.

Really? The colors have been one of the best things about the series IMO.

Personally I've always seen Daredevil as one of Marvels darker heroes, then again I usually catch things after relaunches like Miller's Man Without Fear so the coloring is a little odd and how he took down Stilt-man, I'm assuming thats who that is, is reminiscent of Adam West's Batman, which was crap to me. I'm sorry the art is fine but the coloring really kills it for me and this story looks to lack the appeal Daredevil always held for me and we really only get a 3 page glimpse.
