First Look: BUCKY BARNES: THE WINTER SOLDIER #1

He has a new role and a new mission.

No Caption Provided

This October, James Buchanan Barnes steps into his new role as intergalactic protector in BUCKY BARNES: THE WINTER SOLDIER #1, the out-of-this-world series from rising star creators Ales Kot & Marco Rudy. Following the shocking finale of Original Sin, what has the Winter Soldier more driven than ever before?

Be there when the master assassin takes on his new role as the “man on the wall,” protecting the Earth from extraterrestrial and extra-dimensional threats by any means necessary. Inherited from his predecessor Nick Fury, Bucky will go to any lengths to accomplish his new mission. From the depths of Limbo to the far reaches of space to the hallowed halls of Asgard – no challenge is too great for the Winter Soldier. But he is not alone in his quest – former S.H.I.E.L.D. director Daisy Johnson a.k.a. Quake is along for the ride, and she brings her own set of skills and expertise to Bucky’s new shadow war.

He’s toppled dictators and foiled terrorist plots, but how can one man measure up to aliens, demons, monsters and gods? Clearly they’ve never met the Winter Soldier! A new mission begins this October, and the Winter Soldier brings his years of battle-hardened experience to the Marvel Universe’s grandest stage!

Don’t miss one moment of the pulse-pounding spy espionage action when Kot & Rudy go intergalactic and explore the man beneath the mask in BUCKY BARNES: THE WINTER SOLDIER #1 – hitting comic shops and digital devices this October!

I love the premise. The artwork is not exactly my style. But seeing Bucky fight Gods, alien races, and Demons is enough to convince me to at least try the first two issues.

@slimj87d: What do you think of Bucky's redesign/updated look? Seems they decided to incorporate his movie look along with keeping his comic look like the domino mask.

@war_killer: I'm not a big fan of the mask. The art is still tripping me out like someone on drugs. I'm interested to see where this goes.

I like him better with short hair though like in the invaders or Brubaker run.

@slimj87d: Yeah the art is going to take some getting use to, it's really out there. Though that could actually be good when exploring strange new worlds, as they most likely will look way weirder than what we're use to, not to mention the other dimensions Bucky may travel to like Limbo.

I like that they kept the domino mask, it seems they may be trying to have different add-ons that Bucky may wear for different situations. It also makes sense that when going to places like Asgard Bucky would want to keep his identity a secret, thus explaining the face-cover. The hood is also an interesting addition which I'm curious how they'll incorporate into his look.

I agree with you about the long hair, he looks better with it short.

Well, Phobos predicted that she would go places. He just didn't predict that it wouldn't last more than 5 minutes.

Seriously, she was director for 5 minutes, before Hill was back in charge.

Dang, man, I love Bucky, but this seems way too much up the same alley as Red Hood and The Outlaws-- Street-level former sidekicks who get vaulted to the other side of the comic book spectrum with the cosmic levelers. Not that that's a bad thing for Red Hood and his pals, but I feel like that's just not right for Bucky. He should have a title with inspiration from Die Hard, James Bond, and maybe some Indiana Jones to mix it up all rolled up into one super cool burrito.

Also, I'm not too excited about that art

The art looks very pulpy Sci-Fi. I like. Also, the plot direction is so far out there for a character like the Winter Soldier that I want to check it out. It looks fun

they're actually going to use those designs from the variant page? i hope not, i love Winter Soldier current look. They give him that mask then he'll be stepping in Star Lords territory. Not gonna lie at first glance i thought i was looking at Nightwing in those variant designs.

I'm gonna enjoy the hell out of this, although I have a feeling it won't last as long I would like it too. But congrads to Marvel for putting out such unique and stylized art on book that with a fairly popular character, especially after Cap 2.

I like that this take on Winter Soldier is pretty much a 180 from Brubaker's. Hope this good, I'll be giving the first issue a go.

Well the design is straight from his look in The Winter Soldier movie. So I wouldn't say they were copying Star-Lord as their masks look completely different. Not to mention that they've already used the movie-look in The Bitter March mini-series.

Personally it would make sense that Bucky would want to be better hide his identity, considering that his current work probably wouldn't sit well with most.

I'll pick at least 3 issues to give it a fair shot.

That art is a bit too trippy, but I can appreciate it. Especially that fourth page.

Really digging the premise of this book and love that Quake is apart of it. The art, though beautiful, doesn't seem right for a Bucky book but I'll wait to see it for myself before making a final judgment.

Seems to me the Artwork is a nod to the old 70's psychedelic Nick Fury. I'm guessing Buck-O took his place. (I'm way behind)

Not a fan of Bucky's new look, though...

I mean, I don't mind his movie look - in fact, I adore it, but what's good for Sebastian Stan and for the movie isn't necessarily the same for the comic book.

Like mentioned earlier: I dislike Bucky in long hair. His short hair from Brubaker's run and from All New Invaders is great.

(This hood and -whatever he carries on his back- reminded me much of Batman's sidekicks, especially Nightwing with his sticks.)

The art is... Confusing. It's beautiful, but not quite my style. I just want this run to be good.

I loved Marco Rudy's work on Marvel Knights: Spider-Man, but this looks...not as compelling.

I'll be sure to check out the title on MDCU to see if it changes my mind.

@kleo_94: agreed, i know Buck came in with long hair in the beginning but like you i think its better if he wore it short. I also think he looks too much like Grayons in those pics. Oddly enough Grayson is sporting short hair in series now, guess he donated his hair to Barnes lol.

Seems like a fun ride, maybe a spin off movie or TV Show in the WS future? Need some brand spanking new cosmic material to push the edge a bit? I like it. Can't wait to read this and see where it leads.
