First Look: Brian Wood's All Female X-MEN #1

Get ready for Storm, Rogue, Jubilee, Kitty Pryde, Rachel Grey, Rogue & Psylocke in X-Men action.

Let's face it, the female characters in the X-Men are some of the best ones created. So many great ones exist and so many important stories have involved them. It was announced back in January that we'd be seeing a new X-Men title featuring an all-female cast. Today, Marvel has released a first look at next month's X-MEN #1.

No Caption Provided

Storm, Rogue, Jubilee, Kitty Pryde, Rachel Grey & Psylocke redefine what it means to be a Child of the Atom in X-MEN #1, kicking off the all-new ongoing series by the blockbuster creative team of writer Brian Wood (Ultimate Comics X-Men) and artist Olivier Coipel (Avengers VS. X-Men)! An old enemy shows up at the X-Men’s door, seeking asylum from an ancient evil come back to Earth. Meanwhile, Jubilee has come home, and she’s brought with her an orphaned baby who might hold the key to the Earth’s survival…or its destruction! With an imminent alien invasion and an eons-spanning war between brother and sister around the corner, Storm steps up and puts together a team to protect the child and stop a new threat that could destroy all life in the Marvel Universe!

This May, Wood and Coipel take X-Men in an all-new, all-different direction in X-MEN #1!

"Jubilee has come home, and she’s brought with her an orphaned baby who might hold the key to the Earth’s survival…or its destruction!"

Ugh. Really? Another messianic OR apocalyptic child?

I guess this is a book which will rely more heavily on its character interactions than its plot. Of course, if any cast can carry that weight, this is probably it. And based on Mara, I have faith in Wood to do a good job. Hopefully he lives up to that faith.

And the art is ridiculously good, though that one panel of Storm is a little...over-the-top.

The amount of need I have for this is amazing! I got to see some of the panels at C2E2 this past weekend and it was phenomenal.

I don't really get what looks so worth while here. The art is very nice & all, but doesn't sell me on it. Not trying to be Danny Downer though.

Also shouldn't it be called X-People.

Pretty much. Because if you just say "are you reading X-Men?" people are bound to ask which one. Considering how long it went as "XX" before having its official name announced, I don't see the "All-Female" modifier going away any time soon. The fact that it's all women is the most identifiable thing about the book, and it's faster than saying "the new X-Men book that isn't Uncanny or All-New."

@hempknight757: I agree. The art is nice but it's nothing special, and the team/plot don't excite me either.

II'll check this our but I don't see this being "book of the year", I don't know why, but I just don't see it.

@akbogert: Wouldn't 'Adjectiveless X-Men' be good enough? I think I've heard that used for older 'X-Men' series'.

I don't like the way it's been handled. They could have just announced the series and who was in it without basically saying 'LOOK, THEY'RE ALL WOMEN! WE HAVE TO TELL YOU THAT BECAUSE WE DIDN'T THINK YOU'D NOTICE!' I get the feeling people would still be calling it 'All Female X-Men' anyway though, which sucks.

@v_scarlotte_rose: I mean, I'm surprised more people don't just call it X-Women. I've heard various explanations for why they can't do that, but at the end of the day, using the male word for an exclusively female team does seem rather ridiculous. If there was even one guy there, then I guess you'd have your justification. As it stands now, X-Women is simply an accurate way of putting it.

Trouble is that people act like calling it X-Women makes them less significant; I disagree, but I guess it's not up to me, so... *shrug*

@akbogert: I've always thought that the 'men' in 'X-Men' was used in the same way that 'man/mankind' refers to all humans, and not just males. So X-Women wouldn't make sense to me.

@v_scarlotte_rose: X-Men refers to a mixed group, though. This is a 100% female group.

I'll use French as an example: when referring to a group, you use the masculine (ils). If, and only if, the entire group is female, then you use the feminine (elles). English presumes the masculine article when there is uncertainty or the potential of confusion, but in this particular case there's no uncertainty: they're all women.

The best real excuse for not using X-Women is that this allows them to add male members to the team without having any sort of confusion in changing the name of the book. I like @xwraith's solution in principle but of course in casual conversation mentioning the volume of a book gets a little ridiculous. Likely this will be resolved by the fact that the other books have already been shortened (to UXM and ANXM and WATXM) so "X-Men" by itself is probably up for grabs and will quickly be understood to refer to this title.

It does feel heavy handed.

Look we got a cast of only girls. Thats right. Look we are showing how powerful women can be at the exclusion of men.

The problem being that x-men is the one team comic book that has historically had powerful women as leaders, and half of the roster has been women. Their was more a sense of equality than any other book. You didn't have to make a broad statement, because men and women worked together.

As my sisters always said, I hate when something comes out "exclusively" for women. It generally means that they are trying to market to stupid "politically correct" people who think they are standing for something, when all they are doing is falling for product placement, hook, line, and sinker.

@akbogert: That's a problem I have with language, the fact that male terms are often used for all people, as if men are the main kind of people and women are some kind of minority or variant species. Like your french example, or humans being called 'man' to casual things like saying 'hi guys' to a mixed group being generally accepted.

I actually don't like the name 'X-Men' because of my issues with language, but seeing as that's what the team is called, I don't see why the name should be changed because of who's in the team.

How old is Jubilee? And seriously "an orphaned baby who might hold the key to the Earth’s survival…or its destruction!" Again?!?!? SERIOUSLY??!!

So, the first time we have an all female X title and it's not them doing powerful superhero stuff, it's about them looking after a baby... What am I supposed to interpret here??
