First Look: BATMAN: EARTH ONE Volume 2

The new volume is slated for 2015.

BATMAN: EARTH ONE Volume 2 isn't coming out until 2015 but DC has shared a first look at Gary Frank's penciled interiors. Of course, Geoff Johns is writing once again. Looking at these pages make us hunger for more.

@jaken7:

If you are talking about the Killer Croc that looks like a mutated crocodile that stands upright with the long tail and snout then I agree with you. However, if you are talking about his early looks and his look from the animated series then I disagree. They are trying to make him look like a combination of the animated series and his early looks which are possible. Thankfully they are not making him look like The Fly.

@marauteatime: Out of the 7+ billion people in the world, not a single one of them comes even close to looking like Killer Croc. It's. Not. Realistic.

I'm aware of Croc's origins, therefore I know of the skin diseases he was diagnosed with as a child. Those are real. Them causing someone to look like a crocodile man however, is NOT real.

@jaken7:

Argyria, Ichthyosis vulgaris and Harlequin Ichthyosis is hardly unsubstantiated BS. Those diseases or at least two of them is what Killer Croc has. So please don't go saying that Killer Croc is not realistic because it is very possible especially since people do have those diseases. Also I picked apart your comments because a lot of what you said needed to be addressed. Good day to you.

@jaken7:

"The biggest jobber in all of comics (who Bats has beaten mercilessly more times than I care to count) is absolutely stomping Batman, and the only thing Bats can do is cover Croc's face with his cape? C'mon."

This is a different take on the character. Not only that in a few of Batman's first meetings with Croc, he had a hard time beating him. Beck, even in the Arkham Asylum game. Not only that, this is still betta Batman who is still learning on how to be Batman and that the same trick he used on one person does not mean it will work on the other.

"Batman isn't a realistic concept to begin with. That's my problem with Johns and his twisted view of the Caped Crusader."

Actually quite a few of the comics are plausibly realistic and so far this Earth One Batman is more realistic than any Batman I have seen yet. Even Year One Batman.

"Which makes me laugh because that's clearly not Batman. No extensive training and no skill? Complete with gadgets that don't work!? Does that describe the Dark Knight?"

Actually....yes. This Batman has had some training, he just is not as skilled as the other versions yet because these are as till in his early years. On top of that, this version of Bruce was so traumatized and filled with anger at the world that he became a recluse with only Alfred there to try and help him along. That sounds more like something Batman would do instead of being angry at the world then travel and train around the world.

And now I will really enjoy this. I am going to laugh at this so hard it would rival the Joker.

"And if Johns was really trying to create an ultra-realistic Batman story, he wouldn't put friggin' Killer Croc in it. That sh!t isn't possible in reality at all."

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! You sir are a moron. I usually do not insult but you are insulting intelligent people by thinking Killer Croc is not realistic and could not exist. In fact FYI there are at LEAST 3 very real diseases out there that clearly Killer Croc was influenced by:

Argyria (aka gray skin), Ichthyosis vulgaris (which is a skin disorder causing dry, scaly skin) and Harlequin Ichthyosis (which is something you will have to look up since it is too disgusting to describe. And finally any person can file their teeth to resemble a crocodiles. You put all four or even three out of the four and you have Killer Croc. So don't think for one minute that the character is not realistic. The only true unrealistic design of Croc is the one where he looks like a mutated crocodile instead of a man with a disease.

@saint_wildcard: You're using double standards. You say:

Why the f**k does it matter if he's not an expert. It's a non-canon story.

Is akin to me saying ''why the f**ck does it matter, Batman beating Superman in DKR is a non-canon story''

People who claim it created the Bat-God have never read the story. They have probably read one famous scene and that's it, in the same story Bruce Wayne has become an Alcoholic who wants to die and he gets completely trashed by a bunch of punk teenage gangs before having to re-train. It is clear that DKR being non-canon is irrelevant in the eyes of Superman fans, by your logic, instead of getting upset about YouTube comments you by your own logic would simply respond by saying it's non-canon and thus not representative.

Superman fans complain about DKR. Batman fans complain about Earth One. Both are 'non canon' stories yet one non canon story does not get a pass whereas another does.

Dafuq are you talking about? Every time we talk you bring in your opinion and ignore everything I said or twist it. I clearly stated that I think most Superman fans know that TDKR is non canon... but the a--hole disciples of the Batgod don't. Also I know it's non canon. I don't get worked up about it, but you're the worst person to bring this up to me considering you said if recreating TDKR comes at the cost of Superman's reputation, do it. Also I can't speak for everyone, only myself so if you chose to validate your pissing and moaning by saying Superman fans piss and moan about TDKR, keep at it. I personally don't wine about non canon stories like Earth One Superman where he dates a hooker.

Which is completely not true - you are pinning the controversy of DKR on Batman fans for 'Batgod' - surprise surprise, many Superman fans hate it regardless because of what it did to Superman, it's not all ''Batgod fanboys'': I have seen many people complain about the story-line for the sole reason that Superman should not have acted the way he did, which isn't related to Batgod, but a fan's opinion of how Superman was in a non-canon story.

This idea that non-canon stories don't hold weight is simply untrue.

So you admit Superman fans dont like TDKR simply due to that one fight scene?

How was that admitting it? Also it's not the fight itself but what it did to the comic book reading culture and created the Batgod in the eyes of many fans. If the story had just be loved and at the time and passed on I think most of the Superman fans wouldn't complain, but go to any Youtube/Facebook comment section and you're bound to see someone bring up TDKR when it comes to who would win in a fight and then go on to ignore any other examples thrown at them

@jaken7: Earth One Batman was literally the first few times he ever went out as Batman. Batman Begins, though still inexperienced compared to TDK and TDKR, already had full gear and training. Earth One Batman is sort of like Year One, Bale was more like Year Two if that makes any sense.

And really, you think Batman holding his own against Killer Croc, who's much stronger than a regular human, is a bad thing? Bale would get eaten alive.

To echo the sentiments of other comments, Gary Frank's art is amazing. Geoff Johns' Batman is not. The reason for this has nothing to do with his version not being BatGOD (such a thing doesn't really exist anyway, it's just a catch all term for competent JLA level Batman); has nothing to do with him being realistic either (he isn't.). The problem is Johns' version of Batman is actually BatIDIOT. I have no issues with most alternate takes on Bruce Wayne, but this version shares almost no qualities with prior versions of the character. Frank Miller's Batman in Year One, while not yet ready and experienced, was still highly trained, intelligent, willing to sacrifice himself for the benefit of others, and was competent. Generally, no matter who writes Batman, whether the story is awesome or completely sucks, elseworlds or main continuity, Bruce Wayne is characterized as a troubled man who dedicates his life to helping others and warring on crime via martial arts mastery, exceeding cunning, impressive tech and deductive brilliance. Geoff Johns' Bruce Wayne only cares about himself, possesses basic self defense technique, is insane, not very bright, and about as far removed from any other versions of Batman that have ever been.

Most frustrating for me, however, is the fact that his portrayal of Bullock and Alfred were pretty good! Geoff is a great writer when he's writing characters that he cares about like Hal Jordan; loved his Aquaman run and his Flash ain't to shabby either. But when he writes Bruce, it feels like he HATES the character, and that sucks for fans of Batman.

Anyway, I will more than likely pick this book up second hand just to admire Gary Franks artwork like I did with Miller and Lee's All Star Batman and Robin. Just my two cents...

@allstarsuperman: The lack of over the top skill and competence was not in the Nolan trilogy. Nor was Batgod present in the Tim Burton films. Yet comic book fans of Batman love the Burton version where he casually killed people and tolerated the Nolan version when he ultimately did the same thing because the essence of the character was still there. Johns has never once had the ability to write the character of Batman worth anything. So he now got to fundamentally butcher the character at the core, and people are going to call the implicit nihilism of the first volume realistic. GG, if the real world were as broken and hopeless as Gotham city, we would all have gone insane or killed ourselves. Or been fed to pet serial killers.. Ugh.

Finally. I've been waiting for this for so long now. The massive reveal it at the end of the first book was awesome. Honestly I loved everything about the first book. Bruce's new origin. Alfred being the one who trained him was genius. And the Harvey bullock origin was awesome though quite sad as well. Can't wait to see what comes next.
