First Look At "Days Missing #1"!

How do you stop the world from ending?

First Look: How do you stop the world from ending?

When Archaia and Roddenberry teamed up to release " Days Missing," I'll admit I was a bit skeptical over the storyline. I've never really been a "Star Trek" fan, and Roddenberry is behind the very successful series. I love it when a comic proves me wrong and makes me question my initial opinions; and I am so glad that I read this first issue. While I do still have my criticisms about the book itself, I was completely blown away by the quality of the writing. Phil Hester proves he is a master in his use of eloquent language. While initially I was not crazy over Frazer Irving's interior art, it grew on me as I delved into the language of the story. At first glance, Dale Keown's cover art is utterly breathtaking. It maintains a beautiful construction while utilizing objects (book, pocket watch, etc.) which represent deeper elements within the story.

Hester lays the foundation for what promises to be a successful five part series, and I am really looking forward to the next issue. "Days Missing" is set for release on August 18th, 2009.

Based on the review, do you think you might give the book a chance?

I miiiight give it a chance. The book sounds decent , but I don't see it as something I would pick up monthly.

I recall that cover and the premise from awhile ago and I do believe I'll have to give it a go.

@Bruce Vain: I feel like a lot of people are skeptical of picking up comics from independent publishing companies because they are unfamiliar with the characters; after having to read so many comic books all the time, (and finding myself frequently disappointed,) I was happy to read about a new character and a new series. What matters is the quality of the writing, in the end. And this book is really special. I thought Phil Hester did an amazing job.

@Decept-O: Good to hear! I would like to hear your thoughts if you do decide to pick it up!

You should see the US covers fro the Harry Potter series, providing you haven't already. The artist who did the US covers was the only artist that was allowed to read the books before she did the art. It's why the covers were so much more detailed.

History does repeat itself. That is why those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it.

I have no problems with more independent publishing companies. Most time you will tend to get a better story out of them, because they don't have several different writers to throw continuity to the winds. If you can figure out the continuity of Wolverine or Spider-man, with all the series they appear in, you deserve a freakin' medal.
I try and recommend Gold Digger to whoever I can. I love the series. The art is incredible.
I will certainly look into this series. A 5 out of 5 rating is difficult to ignore.

@Babs:
It's just I've never heard of Archaia - I mean I hear you talk about them it's I just don't know what they are publishing specifically.Though I do love Phil Hester's work from the Darkness and from the inserts you've read does make the book sound intriguing; &  I DO love the cover , but it's the interior artwork that wasn't really selling me. Don't get me wrong I love that grittiness type style it's just that this art seemed I don't know - dull perhaps. But like I said I might give it a read for the writing alone.

definitely 100% sounds like the comic I've been waiting on. As of late i haven't really been reading much of anything monthly, I prefer the in depth deaper poetic writing of say watchmen, swamp thing, etc. And i love the gritty stuff like hellblazer and 100 bullets.. this definately sounds preferable for me to pick up.

I may have to pick this up. It would probably be the first series I bought for the writing. The quotes that Babs picked out were quite beautiful.

Hey Bruce Vain! I'm Stephen Christy, the head of Archaia's LA office. We're basically a small-press publisher that puts out comics that the big two can't or won't publish. We're a small operation but we're very, very passionate about making good comics and getting people to read things beyond the regular superhero books that we all love. I never want to hear anyone say that they've never heard of Archaia, so if you'd like to shoot me an e-mail at my personal e-mail address, which is s.chri@archaia.com, I'll send you a package of our books and you can see for yourself what we're all about. And I'll throw Days Missing #1 in also! :) I think you'll like it if you give it a chance!

Found it really intriguing and would really want to pick it up monthly. The story sounds great, the quoted writing is astonishing and I simply love the art. Too bad for me, my comic shop only gets DC, Marvel, Image, IDW, Vertigo, Wildstorm and Dark Horse monthly and all the other publishers in tp format if you request it.

I hate it but I can understand it, oh well will have to wait for the tp

too bad because for a .99 price I would have bought any new series even if it was crap, which for what I've seen it has all the things that could make it an epic

The story sounds very exciting, I'll definitly pick this up!

Great review, I'll give it a go. I really do wish more people would invest in indie comics. There are a lot of great gems out there to be found.

Also, congrats to the boys over at Archaia for making the NYT bestseller list.
