First Look: ALL-NEW GHOSTRIDER #1

Get ready to start your engines in March.

No Caption Provided

This March, a new legend is born on the streets of Los Angeles in ALL-NEW GHOST RIDER #1 – the high-octane new series from writer Felipe Smith and artist Tradd Moore! All-New Ghost Rider #1 will continue the exciting wave of All-New Marvel NOW! series with a brand new & sensational take on the Spirit of Vengeance!

A high speed street race in East LA leads a young man down the fast and furious road of destiny. Amid an East Los Angeles neighborhood full of gang violence and drug trafficking, 18-year old Robbie Reyes explodes onto the scene as the newest Ghost Rider!

"In Robbie Reyes, Felipe Smith and Tradd Moore have created one of the most complex and likable characters to be granted great power — and a great ride! -- and learn the great responsibility that comes with both," says Editor In Chief Axel Alonso. "Reyes comes from a very different zip code than Peter Parker, but his story is universal."

“His vehicle of choice, the automobile, very clearly sets him apart visually,” says series writer Felipe Smith in an interview with Marvel.com “In comparison to his vengeance seeking predecessors, he’s very young and inexperienced in most aspects of life; but as a the product of a harsh inner city upbringing, Robbie’s street smarts, overall distrust for most people, and clear contempt for his violent surroundings make him the perfect host for a Spirit of Vengeance.”

But motorcycles and cars were just the beginning! Robbie has the ability to turn any vehicle into a flaming engine of retribution. And he’ll need it. War is brewing in the criminal underworld. But crime and corruption have a new enemy. With the pedal to the metal, Marvel’s newest Ghost Rider puts vengeance into overdrive!

Who is this new Ghost Rider? And how did he come to possessed with such awesome power? The answers will be revealed when the explosive ALL-NEW GHOST RIDER #1 sets comic shops ablaze this March!

This actually looks kinda awesome. The covers/preview art looked really flat and angular and weird, but the interiors are much more dynamic. It sucks that Alejandra got short changed, though.

I like the art in general, but I'm not big on the design of Ghost Rider, specifically his skull.

Seems like it could be interesting to see a ghost rider using something other than a motorcycle. It's iconic of Ghost Rider, but there's nothing that says he has to drive a motorcycle.

Also, the Ghost Hamster variant cover is just hilarious.

don't like the look of it and kinda think it's going to be dull, but who am I to judge since I never was a fan of the original Ghost Rider anyway (apart from his looks, that I now appreciate much more)

Amazing how the "real f-ing world" to you lines up so well with racist stereotypes. Guess it can't be helped. It's just science, right?

NO your thinking i expect or think all or most black people are like that, which is false, i do not, i merely acknowledge that they do exist, and that they do fit within the context of the scene

Not gonna lie...I do actually like the way he looks but I'm not really feelin the car. But it's fine. Adds a new element to the character I guess? His new skull face thing going on reminds me of a Hollow from Bleach or something like that. :p

I do not buy the argument that an author—or artist—is not responsible for what makes it into their work because of a supposed contextual precedent (that itself may be supported by racist expectations) that makes it seem more acceptable. Versimilitude is itself influenced by unrealistic portrayals, making these stereotypes reinforcing. And all that before pointing out that you're arguing a point based on "realism" in a book about a muscle car-driving burning skeleton.

I believe the accusation was "a little racist". The spectrum isn't "burning crosses in someone's front lawn" and "not racist". That's a false dichotomy.

If a stereotype is popular does that make it no longer a stereotype? If some black creators choose to portray themselves a certain way does that give a white comic book artist the right to appropriate that portrayal for their own work?

does anyone else just get a yelling sound in their head whilst looking at this, it kinda sounds like NOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! I'm going to assume that's my comic book sense telling me not to buy this.

Would you prefer all the characters to be white instead? How about Asian? Why not make them blue? It doesn't make a difference. the point is, there is gambling and illegal activities going on. That's it.

It's an interesting new concept, but I don't know if it does it for me. It look like a new idea and could be cool. I'll hold my final verdict till after is see more of the comic.

I wish people wouldn't jump to "racist" comments so quickly. Not everything has a racist undertone folks. Yes, there are a lot of stereotypes floating around out there, but I don't think they are necessarily all racists. They are being applied to a fictional character for many of reason other than someone is being racist. Come on people.

Racist or not, that is the most ridiculous crew of faux street racers I have ever seen. I really think the new direction of this franchise is brilliant, but what I have seen of the execution so far leaves a lot to be desired on my part.

I immensely disliked the cover and design for the Rider on that cover, but the fifth page down sold me on the look.

Still, I was expecting Johnny Blaze. I've really liked how he's been written in Thunderbolts thus far. I don't see the point of this new guy, and don't expect him to last two years. Still, I'll give him a shot.

I just don't understand Marvel's unwillingness to use Johnny Blaze. They insist on bringing in new, hispanic, blood for some reason. The last one was a failure, so much so they even killed her off...and Blaze became Ghost Rider again. They really just need to go back to Blaze...it's what most people want.

I would prefer them not to reference racial stereotypes, as such essentially uses "blackness" as a prop—much like the cars and bag of money—as a shorthand to tell the reader what's going on, thus dehumanizing African Americans. The exact same character in less stereotypical dress would have worked for the same panel.

I don't understand why it's racist having a black pimp in this comic, it would be just as lame if it was a white wannabe.

I'll say this again, that car looks awesome.
