First Look: ACTION COMICS #19

The new creative team of Andy Diggle and Tony Daniel are ready to take over the title.

On Monday we heard an update on the upcoming Scott Snyder/Jim Lee SUPERMAN UNCHAINED series due in June. Before that happens, we'll have another great pairing as Andy Diggle and Tony Daniel prepare to take the reigns on ACTION COMICS.

No Caption Provided

It all begins on April 3. Here's what Andy Diggle told DC's The Source when it was first announced he was taking over:

Even in an industry dominated by superheroes, Superman is THE superhero – the original and best - and I’m flattered, daunted and inspired in equal measure at being given the opportunity to build on such an incredible and historic legacy. The word ‘iconic’ is bandied around a lot in comics, but Superman defines the term. I’m excited to be working with Tony Daniel, whose artistic and storytelling skills will be bringing the world(s) of Superman to stunning visual life. Together we’ll be carving out spectacular new adventures that respect the past while redefining the future of the Man of Steel.

DC Comics also revealed a first look at next month's issue (which will also be in the back of the March 20 releases).

Can't wait! I'm excited for a new team! While Grant/Rags are a great team, Morrison's writing sometimes has me lost. I'll be reading an issue and be like, when the hell did this happen or what the hell is going on? Hopefully Diggle can eliminate some of the confusion.

I have to agree. You're right. I mean I love Morrison and he has written some of the best Superman stories including some in the current run on Action, but some issues have been a mess as well.

I hope Diggle can bring some consistency to the book. And we know Daniel is going to kill on art.

Yeah, Daniels' art is amazing on it. I've already told him more than once on Twitter

No. Get out

His run started out good, but once the  World Collector arc ended, in typical Morrison fashion, it got convoluted and weird, no, not creative, just weird.

I know it wasn't everyone's cup of tea but it's vastly superior to everything that's been done in Superman so far. Of course that's just my view but the only issues I haven't truly liked are 5 since it was redundant, 9 because it was too Morrisony and 17 which was Morrison going around in circles a bit

Nah Supes is much more aggressive now, even last issue in Superman #17 he Hit H'el so hard the thremors of his punches could be felt in the Earth's core and on the JL Watchtower he doesn't pull back as much as the old Superman did plus he's also much more smarter often talking science babble like Reed Richards would.

Ouch.

Well to be fair, the dude was about 15 seconds away from destroying the solar system, but stuff like that isn't really new to Superman. Around the time of Infinite Crisis, Superman nearly hit Black Adam with enough force to destroy the moon. The only reason he didn't was because Adam turned his back on Superman, knowing full well that it was out of Superman's code of ethics to attack someone from behind or some ish like that.

Sciencey babble isn't new to Superman, either, nor are his aggressive tendencies. That's just more pronounced now, along with his old-school arrogance.

I have read enough Superman over the years he is my first Superhero that I liked even as a child. His character is much different than he was before. Sure I'm not saying Classic Supes/pre52 Supes wasn't smart or had his aggressiveness side but it was often rare to see. and to be honest he is acting much more like Majestic did in Wildstorm. often seen as the most powerful man on earth. He does seems to be kinda amped up more so than Pre 52.

He hasn't been a condescending jackass yet, so he's not on Majestic levels yet. He seems more like a Bruce Tim/Joe Kelly Superman more than anything. You know, the Superman that wanted to kill Darkseid before Batman pulled him through a boomtube and the Superman that nearly broke Russian Zod's neck merely to prove a point.

I don't think he's more powerful than before, more like this version of Superman holds back a lot less than the previous one.

I'l really miss Morrison as well, but not the art choices made in the latter 1/2 of his run.

Particularly the thick raised "S" which looked horrible.

And it breaks my heart to type those words out because I adore Rags and Chris Sprouse, as well as Brad Walker.

But that design choice was dreadful!

I should also add that recent coloring mistakes with the belt as yellow instead of red look WAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY better!

But nit picks aside this looks outstanding, and as a life long Superman fan (was reading Superman comics before I could talk or even really read!) I'm just happy to have a Superman with no undies on the outside who has also returned to his Action Comics (1938) roots!

And I love the Jeans and T-shirt phase!

After what Morrison served us in Batman, Inc. #8, I can't say I'm not excited for this to come finally. Lets really hope that the series is revitalized under the Diggle-Daniel team.

@Wyldsong: Action Comics Supes had a bit of an attitude, he leapt off buildings holding people to intimidate them, and was a little stand-off-ish--but he still tried to protect people and do the right thing (it was also hard to figure out what the hell he was doing as the comics went on with Morrison's weird timeline stuff)

In Superman he seems pretty typical Superman, maybe a bit less friendly since his parents are both dead.

Will definitely be getting this. Diggle always delivers. And Daniels art looks stunning...much more impressive than his early Batman work. This will be the year for Superman; we got a great creative team on this title, Snyder and Lee on Unchained, and of course the movie. Can't wait!

@Stormbox: Well that's pretty much it...they are both written by Morrison. The point being that prior to Batman, Incorporated #8 I had a great amount of respect for him. But after what he pulled in that issue I just really seemed to lose a whole lot of my respect for him as a writer. Prior to the issue I was actually sad to see that Morrison's time on Action would be done at #18, but now for me its pretty much good riddance to him I say. I'll still salute him for much of what he has done for the comics industry, and I'll still even chance Multiversity in the near future, but other than that, I'm of the firm opinion he just should stay away from superhero stuff altogether. So yeah, the common denominator here is Morrison.

This looks amazing! Why cant the actual Superman comic live up to something like this? This to me is the way Supes should look. Younger and without a lazy eye. I always thought with the reboot they would keep Superman and Batmans friendship in tact. As knowledgeable as Bruce is, I thought it would be great for him to be somewhat of a mentor to Kal. But I suppose that's why I'm no writer.

I've always thought of Bruce being a mentor to Clark's ability to process information, make theories etc, all the science stuff, and Clark mentoring Bruce on...you know... how to be a decent, nice, sociable human being, which is ironic considering he's an alien.
