Favorite Comic Runs RESULTS: Brian Michael Bendis' NEW AVENGERS or ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN?

The community had all week to reflect on the debut story for each series. So, which one are they siding with and why? Plus, a teaser for next week's match-up!

Brian Michael Bendis has quite a history with Marvel, but 2000 and 2005 were particularly big years for him at the House of Ideas. Why, you ask? Well, in 2000, he started his run on ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN with Mark Bagley. Not only does he still write the series, but it's won over countless fans and has taken several refreshing and even shocking turns throughout the years. In 2005, Bendis kicked-off NEW AVENGERS with David Finch. This gave the writer the opportunity to group together a variety of characters after the events of AVENGERS DISASSEMBLED and Bendis most certainty had a whole lot of fun with the roster. The dynamic between characters was especially amusing and the book was full of laughs. We're big fans of both opening storylines, but which one does the community like more? They had the whole week to vote and in the end, a solid majority sided with ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN.

The new version of Spider-Man's origin in an alternate universe earned 63% of the votes. The NEW AVENGERS story arc, Breakout, received 29%. Meanwhile, 7% of Viners shamefully admitted they haven't read either story... at least not yet.

So, why are so many readers madly in love with Spider-Man's debut in the Ultimate universe? Long story short: it's a character-driven, relatable and downright entertaining modern take on the iconic hero's start. From Peter discovering his abilities and using them in school to a grand slugfest with the new Green Goblin (who's sporting a rather intimidating new design), ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN's opening arc is an engaging reimagining of a story many of us already know and love. It had the potential to come off as a blatant rehash, but instead it started a brand new and most definitely very creative mythos. Go ahead and take a moment to give Bendis a round of applause for accomplishing that. It's the least we can do, right?

Viner Post of the Week for UlLTIMATE SPIDER-MAN's Power and Responsibility is by Ninjablade09

"I have to go with Ultimate Spider-Man. It brought Peter back to his roots, a high schooler with issues. The first storyline was able to capture the same essence that Amazing Fantasy had, the thrill. It may have taken 5 issues for him to finally get the role, but in those five issues you had great character development, that really showed the relationship between Peter, Ben and May, and Peter and MJ. It was interesting to see Peter take advantage of his powers to play basketball, adds more to the relatability. These reasons alone are why Ultimate Spider-Man gets my vote."

A NEW TEASER APPEARS! We've included a small sample of the image for next week's match-up. Be the first person to guess it correctly and we'll give you a mention in Monday's article. Please only post your guess after you think you can identify both of the covers. We'll be nice a give you a little hint, too. One is from Marvel and one is from DC. Good luck, Viners!

I don't know, I noticed the Ultimates cover from the start and since @k4tzm4n (usually) compares stories from the same writer I remembered the cover from Red Son.

I swear if Ultimate Avengers beats Red Son I'm going to make rant in all caps pointing out how stupid other's opinion is and how better my point of view is without any evidence whatsoever to back it up. If anyone challenges my opinion I will insult them by saying things about their mother and family in a sexual manner and saying that their intellect is inferior to mine in a urban and rude way.

Ultimate Spider-Man may be my favorite Spider-Man series. I haven't collected it all, but from what I read, I love. It was the first Spider-Man series I read and it will always be a memorable one.

@k4tzm4n: stop having cop out answers like such as "I've never read either". Their opinion doesn't matter if they haven't read it.

No. Because if that option doesn't exist, some of the people who haven't read either story will vote anyway, basing it on whatever they want to (characters, art, covers, whatever). At least when that option exists it removes some of the votes.

@k4tzm4n: Fine! Er I mean good point. But if people were honest...

@k4tzm4n: Didn't this kind of already happen?

Sorta, but over 50% of the votes went to other titles. No way of telling which they prefer between these two, ya dig?

Maybe, but Red son was better to comicvine less then a year ago will be interesting to see if between the two of them there will be a difference. I'll see if I can read (for the first time) Ultimates so I can vote.

Well, that's a hell of a lot of votes which went to other books, so I'd say it should be interesting.

I picked New Avengers since I read it but I haven't read the very first story arc of Ultimate Spider-Man. i read Miles' first arc, not Ultimate Peter's.

ALTHOUGH, I did read the first issue and I liked it.

@k4tzm4n:

Ah, it was from the first issue. I have the collection, so used to seeing the cropped image. Apologises.

@dark_vengeance_: Its not ultimate Avengers, Its the Ultimates which is most influential marvel comic of 2000's. Ultimate Avengers was its inferior follow up, because it was under heavy editorial control which prevented Millar doing what he wanted. Red Son is great but its no where near as mind blowing as the Ultimates.

Ultimates vs Red Son… damn =/ I love both but I'm gonna have to side a bit with the Ultimates.

yey! Spidey.

USM was the obvious winner for me. Bendis' New Avengers run was flawed as hell.

As for next week: The Ultimates takes it by a mile for me.

Edited by superior_prime_maybe

i hold USM very dearly... ive read the whole peter parker saga so many times...
