Favorite Animated Movies: Batman: Mask of the Phantasm vs. Batman: Under the Red Hood

Can you choose between these two superb movies?!

Batman has more than a few enjoyable animated features, but two tend to rise above the rest: Batman: Mask of the Phantasm and Batman: Under the Red Hood. 1993's Mask of the Phantasm is a compelling mystery and, despite the older release date, it most definitely stands the test of time and then some! Meanwhile, 2010's Under the Red Hood is an action-packed ride that's full of emotion.

Both movies need to be watched at least once by any Batman fan (you're doing yourself a major disservice if you don't watch them), but this week, we want you to compare and contrast the two projects. Do you prefer one over the other or do you love them equally? Do you think one story is better than the other? Perhaps a memorable twist or phenomenal action scene won you over? Or maybe the cast will help you make up your mind? Think it through and then go to the poll!

Look, we're well aware that both are excellent and this probably won't be one of the easiest decisions for some of you. Because of that, we feel obligated to point out there's no need to rush to a decision just yet. The poll will remain open until Friday morning (ET), so that should be more than enough time to give this choice a lot of thought or even watch both of these films again. Shortly after we lock the poll on Friday morning, we'll post an updated article with the poll's percentages and feature some of your posts. Yes, that means if you're going to vote, we strongly encourage you to speak your mind in the comments, too! So, which gripping movie will take the top spot, Viners?

Check the homepage this Friday to see which animated movie wins and why. In the meantime, feel free to make future match-up suggestions in the comments below or tell us via Twitter.

MOTP had a better story, but UTRH was more entertaining to watch. Kinda like Civil War against The Winter Soldier

Why is this even a question? Phantasm, no contest. Red Hood isn't even that good. No where close to MotP, at least.

It's a question because some people, like me, don't like Phantasm and prefer Red Hood.

I agree with shamrock. You could see the phantasm's Id from a mile away. The same is true with red hood, but his I'd was hinted at early on, and most of the suspense came from confirming suspicion.

Sure, and you figured it out right? Go ahead lie. It's just kinda sad you kids have no sense of taste and that you'd go so far as to say all that bullsh!t,figures dc movies are going to hell.

Both are good, I prefer Red Hood. I like the Jason Todd story better than MotP, which has a really obvious mystery villain. NPH as Nightwing always bothered me though, terrible choice

Unfair! Both were so good. Under the Red Hood eliminated a lot of the unnecessary bits of Under the Hood, and condensed it in a more timeless, easy to understand package. But Phantasm had a great original story, AND was strong enough to be released in THEATERS, not just straight to home video.

I've seen both...But I only own one...Batman Mask of the Phantasm!!

Its not just the story...THE MUSIC RULES!! I even own the soundtrack! This is the only animated DC movie I have a soundtrack for ( I think its the only DC movie they made one for?).

I like how they tied this in with Batman Beyond too.

The Phantasm story-line has some of the BEST Batman History telling events revealed...in one movie!

Best Movie Scene: Song 8 from the Soundtrack_"The Birth of Batman" Yeah...when he puts on the cowl, and all you see are his eyes glaring at you and Alfred gets all scared taking two steps back saying.."My...God."

Good debate. Very good debate. Personally, I'd throw my lot in with Red Hood because I've watched it a half dozen times and been enthralled with it each time. It's one of those movies I try to get everybody I know to watch. Phantasm was great for the time, and I haven't seen it in awhile, but as I recall, it was very solid but had few moments that truly blew me away. The origin of batman, the fight agains the gcpd and the revelation of jokers identity were great, but the rest was pretty typical btas. I can't think of a single scene I don't love from under the red hood.

No comparison for me, Mask of the Phantasm was what started the animated movie genre and it still holds up to this day, plus the voice acting alone was just incredible. The only comparable movie would be Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker

@dimitridkatsis: Well, I do admit, it's been a while since I've seen both of the movies, but when last I saw the two, I remember being more satisfied with Red Hood overall.

I will give them a watch one more time soon and come back to this thread.

MotP was iconic, if not the best cartoon batman movie I have ever seen. I'll never forget it. As much as I love Under the red Hood ( which might be a close second), I have to go with the the one I grew up watching.

I'm stumped. These 2, along with Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker, are my favorite Batman movies, and the only ones I actually own. I might have to have a marathon to determine which one is better.

Under The Red Hood by a mile. I can't even begin to list why it deserves to win. But here is one reason

Jason Todd. That's all.

Please do list the reasons

Phantasm was good, but imo it was meh in comparison to Red Hood.

How the f@ck can you say that? What was meh about it in comparison?

Gotta go with Under the Red Hood. I found it a better story, and Jason to be an awesome character and Jason Ackles was fantastic--really memorable voice he gave Red Hood.

I liked the Red Hood movie, & it is probly one of the better post-DCAU era movies, but MOTP has a better art style, & made by a better team. It also tied into the great(er) DCAU, which boggles me why DC canceled, & replaced with both nothing & inferior copies.

The only knock I have against MOTP is the costume could have looked a little better, but I assume thats due to keeping who was in the suit a secret. Also wish the character could have been used more.

Although, again I dont really like this match up. It should have been RedHood VS the Batwoman movie.

Under the Red Hood for sure. The beginning and ending packed pretty big emotional punches and everything in between was great and filled with plenty of awesome caped crusader action.

mask of the the Phantasm i loved that movie even to this day. Great plot, great characters, great back story, great new love interest and a nice "origin" story for the joker makes his relationship with batman even more complex.

Under the Red Hood without a doubt. I have never understood the love that MotP gets. The show was great but MotP was just a long episode of the show essentially, and not movie quality.

Mask of the Phantasm buy a mile. As a part of its time still tells a better more complete story and what one would likely consider a "Batman" story in 76 minutes than any of his live action 90s counter parts. Also cheap plug I wrote a pair of things on Mask of the Phantasm my BatmanBatmanBatman piece and a lil something for its 20th anniversary.

Under the Red Hood comes togeter nicely in the end and has some nice action but in totality dosen't match the thematic depth and craftsmanship in Phantasm. Also cheap plug here's my BatmanBatmanBatman Under the Red Hood piece.

Curious was this set in advance? Given that today is 6/23 the release of Batman(1989) an interesting question would've been Batman(1989) and Batman Returns the pair of odd ball Burton films.

I recently rewatched Mask of The Phantasm and I found it pretty dull after the nostalgia wore off. I did enjoy the Joker quite a bit in both of the movies though.

Gotta say Red Hood is the better movie overall.
