Exclusive Preview: CAPTAIN ATOM #9

In order to save the world, Captain Atom had to go to the future. It isn't quite what he thought it would be.

Have you been reading CAPTAIN ATOM? Last issue Nathaniel discovered that the world was going to be destroyed. Let's not forget that he went on a trip through the timestream and was talking to himself. Not talking to himself like a crazy person but talking to different versions of himself from different points in time. It was a little trippy. Now, in order to save the world, he had to go to his future where he saw an interesting version of Megala and is about to see what is going to happen to Ranita.

DC Comics has given us an exclusive preview for issue #9, on sale next week, Wednesday, May 16.

It's one of those titles that feels like it's meant to be read all at once. The first story arc was really good, though you didn't really feel that until you got to the end of it and everything came together.

You are maybe right, it's just the general direction.

It sucks that no one is reading this book. It does read better when it is read as a whole, but if it gets cancelled, which it looks like it will if DC does a third wave, then it won't get the chance to be collected and read that way. The book took Atom and put a different spin on hm. It's a bit like Dr. Manhattan, but he was his inspiration anyway lol. One of the best books that nobody is reading. I just hipe when the time comes, they'll let JT wrap it up raher than cancel it abruptly.

Besides the ugly art, I feel like Captain Atom was just completely ruined. He's supposed to be a loyal military hot shot. Not this ethereal demi god. They've turned him into Dr. Manhattan. Arguably the most boring character in Watchmen.

I like this book, I like the man out of time, and distance he feels from humanity. The art isn't bad, and gives me a fix for something a little different. I pretty much read anything and enjoy it though:p

I love this book, and more people should give it a chance. The art is divisive for some, but the writing is solid and the themes explored are pretty cool. It's fascinating to see probably the most powerful being on the planet, perhaps stronger than Superman, be seen by the public as a threat, a weapon, and now a God, and I'm sticking around til it gets cancelled, which probably will happen unfortunately, but hopefully not for a couple of arcs.

So he saves this boy from a tumor and he grows up to create a cult and greatly twist things, poor Atom. He only wants to help.

@Mbecks14: yaai agree...but that was dr. manhattans charm in watchmen..that he was loosing his character thus loosing faith in humainity. alan moore gave you an idea of what a demi god would go through. and it all came together with dr. manhattan regaining faithh nin humanity and FINDING his character again. and i think thats what JT is going for here...the only problem with this title as opposed to dr manhattan is...alan moore isnt writting this title lol...sorry JT but your just no alan moore. you shouldve just stuck to the original captain atom we all know and love :p

@zackattack529:  Captain Atom doesn't have enough love to sustain an ongoing in any incarnation. He's a bit player. I think this direction is different and interesting but it developed much too slowly for people to hang on.

So sad this gets too much hate. I really like this CA. Especially when, as stated by viners before me, arcs are read as a whole.

I randomly read issue 7 and I was able to figure out parts of what was going on, so the book has never seemed that bad, I would hate it if it got canceled. If I could I'd add it to my pull list but its not really reaching out to anyone as far as I know either. How does this all impact the DC world?

This isn't one of my pulls but it doesn't look bad..though I just would like it much better if the flaming hair wasn't going on. I like that cover though...has such an Indo-Aryan look to Adam there. Like he's Brahma or something.

I think the reports of Captain Atom's imminent cancellation are a bit premature. Even if it does happen, DC just freshened their line with new titles, while cutting away the dead weight. It's unlikely they're prepared to do so again, any time soon. The focus will be on those Watchman titles through the summer. Once the hype machine has finished crowing about those books, that's when DC will need to do another line adjustment to maintain interest in their products. I suspect Captain Atom will still be on the stands in 2013.

It's cool that the book has fans. I'm not one, but I am collecting the title. It's on the slowest burn of any series I've ever read. At this point, I'm only picking it up out of morbid curiosity, in the hopes that, at some point, something... anything... will actually happen. I applaud a book that takes a more cerebral approach, but world building is only so interesting. Now Krul is layering future events over a series that has barely established present events. 8 months in, and I feel like Krul is still building up to actually telling a story. I'm sorry, but in this economy, you don't have the luxury to draw things out that long. This book needs to take some cues from I, Vampire. I'm getting my money's worth out of that title every month.

I had zero Cap. Atom knowledge prior to the new 52. But I've enjoyed this book ever since I picked it up at issue 3 or 4.

I allowed my complete disappointment in Green Arrow to turn me off to JT Krul altogether. I haven't picked up a single issue of Captain Atom because of that. This is the second preview of the series I have seen and it is clear to me I am missing out on something I would enjoy. I for one like the art and the writing has been above the Green Arrow fiasco.ii think I will be picking up some back issues of Captain Atom.

And to think Dr.manhattan was inspired by him and now he's starting to become more like him.
