Edgar Wright Leaves Marvel's Ant-Man Film

The director of the film leaves in a surprise announcement.

No Caption Provided

Coming to us from Variety, Edgar Wright, director of the films Scott Pilgrim vs The World and Shaun of the Dead, has left directing the upcoming 2015 Ant-Man film. In a statement made by both Marvel and Wright, they stated he parted ways due to "differences in their vision of the film.”

Marvel already has another director lined up but has yet to publicly announce who it is yet. Wright was also the co-writer of the film's script, along with Joe Cornish.

This is a big surprise, especially since Wright had been attached to this project since 2006 and has given numerous updates at San Diego Comic Con, every year, keeping Ant-Man and Marvel movie fans in the loop. Even though there is a change in directors, the film is still slated to come out on July 17th, 2015.

The film will star Paul Rudd, Michael Douglas and Evangeline, with Corey Stoll, Michael Pena and Patrick Wilson.

Here's the official statement:

Marvel and Edgar Wright jointly announced today that the studio and director have parted ways on Ant-Man due to differences in their vision of the film. The decision to move on is amicable and does not impact the release date on July 17, 2015. A new director will be announced shortly.

We'll keep you updated as more develops.

Yes, I thought Marvel was better then this....... Oh yes, they do have a long history of choosing lesser known directors and producing mega hits. You would almost think if they decided in this instance that it was not gonna work that they know what their doing huh? I will reserve judgement like always until I actually see the film.

This is probably good news. Marvel seems to know what they want and there is no denying their incredible track with their movies. If they decided he wasn't going to cut it, this is most likely for the best.

this .... well for the most part.

Iron man 3 was a pretty big letdown to me.

....difference in vision? They wouldn't even have an Ant Man movie coming out if it weren't for Wright's vision. I'm a bigger fan of the Marvel Studios movies than I am of those made by Wright, but I can't help but feel the party in the wrong here is the one who has a history of alienating directors, artists, and actors.

@patrat18: Marvel said this was going to be more of a strait up comedy film compared to the rest of their films, and I really don't want that, because there is soooo much they could and should do with this film.

Yeah, but at the same time Edgar kept pushing the movie back more and more. So maybe it was the last straw that he wanted to do something else that was annoying them. We won't really know why they parted until it leaks until then I'm not going to blame either side because it really could have been either of them.

It's been put out there that Mr Wright has already behind schedule and losing money on the project, Marvel didn't have the confidence or patience in him to get the schedule back on track and back in budget. It would have been his first foray in to a large studio movie, compared to the Cornetto trilogy, which are small compared to anything Marvel produce.

Man, that's a real bummer. Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, and The World's End are brilliant and I would have loved to see Wright apply his talents to the MCU. Oh well.

I'm definitely bummed about this news, but if they can't agree it's probably for the best.

I guess things were going a bit too smoothly for Marvel. It'll be interesting to see how the Studio responds to this kind of adversity.

It is funny how quickly people jump ship on this now lol. If Edgar Wright was the ONLY draw for you then it's probably for the best. This movie always had a lot more going for it once we learned about the amazing cast it has. This movie is ready to go, just needs a solid director.

This could be a good thing. Marvel has had a pretty awesome run with their films. If Wrights idea didn't build on the MCU why go down that path? That is not to say Wright is a bad director, I love his films, but maybe it just didn't fit where they were wanting to go.

Well this proves one thing. Marvel is extremely film anti-director; while I understand what they are doing, not letting a director doing something creative is a waste of potential.

I wasn't to interested in the first place, but for the dude to leave after 8 years of working on this is crazy. The worst part is he pitched the idea to Marvel so to leave because of creative differences damn, this is like the 3rd director they have angered.

I'm not surprised, I really think Iron Man 3 is more a exception to the rule now because RDJ being able to name the director. The lack of individual identy within direction in Thor 2 and Cap 2 is really one of the reasons I don't like them as much as their first entries. Cap 2 more for having to be brought to heel of blockbuster requirment but it's part of the reason.

Getting quality TV guys like Russo Bros and Alan Taylor is a totally reasonable thing. They were both able to continue the Marvel house style ably. But that leads to justified complaints of them not feeling unique and just part of a greater boring whole.

This departure dose have me interested in how Guardians turns out in the end maybe Gunn can smuggle that humor in.

This is a bummer.

Bring in Michelle MacLaren!

@mrmazz: Really? Humor? Many people like myself get tired of some of the shoe horned in humor like in Thor 2.

I want to know what this creative difference was?

@lukehero: not sure what you mean by "humor" I thought the sight gags and energy brought by Hiddleston were fantastic. Just thor 2 as a whole was dead emotionally and character wise due to an instance on a mile a minute plot instead of using lot to inform character.

@mrmazz: I mean I am sad about the director leaving. I was just as pumped. Thor 2 was just flat out bad. The forced humor involved the Doctor acting like a nutball every scene.

@lukehero: o that yea that was totally dumb but at least kind of logical from a character perspective given Loki was noodling around in his head. Wish they'd kind of gone tragic dark there.

This is great news. Love Edgar Wright's films, but seriously I didn't for one moment believe that his quirky comedic style was suitable for what is essentially an action sci-fi super hero.

The whole 60's super spy heist premise sounded really corny anyway and Marvel have edged out towards having way too much comedy in their films lately. Thankfully "Captain America-The Winter Soldier" had a much better balance of action and drama with sporadic use of humor.

I for one did not want to see an alternate comedy re-imagining of Ant-Man. Curious to see how this all pans out.

What are Joe & Anthony Russo doing?

@jonny_anonymous: Honestly a Hank Pym film would be no fun at all. It would be a depressing and very sad and more depressing story about a bi-polar scientist with multiply personalty disorder. He is a interesting character but he would not appeal to the average movie-going audience like the more light hearted Scott Lang. But this is just what I think so don't kill me if you don't agree.

I read somewhere that he left because Marvel basically went and changed his original script. What's good of hiring these top name directors and never letting them breathe or push their creative limits (something Edgar could actually do at Warner Brothers ironically.)

Welcome to Hollywood. Name me a Hollywood studio that hasn't alienated directors, artists, and actors during the course of history. Right or wrong they all have and will continue to do so. It's business.

At the end of the day, Wright cannot fully impose his quirky alternate re-imagining or vision for Ant-Man if it doesn't tie in or support the MCU. It's been 8 years. He knew that. Something else is also at play here.

Ant-Man is Marvel's property and they have every prerogative to act in the best interests of their characters.
