EARTH 2 Superman Costume Design Revealed

Get your first look at the 'Man of Steel's' official Earth 2 look and who will die in the upcoming story.

The last week or so we have seen the costume designs of several DC characters hit the web, including Earth 2 Robin, Earth 2 Supergirl and Earth 2 Wonder Woman. Today we get our first look at the Earth 2 Superman costume, and it does not disappoint.

No Caption Provided

In addition to the costume reveal, we also got some insight into what to expect from DC's upcoming EARTH 2.

“What would you have to do to teach Superman to kill?” asks EARTH 2 editor Pat McCallum. “He’s endured the loss of his home world, and now the Last Son of Krypton must weather the death of his soul mate Lois Lane. Just how far can you bend the Man of Steel before he breaks?”

So Lois is dead? Big developments revealed by DC Editor Pat McCallum. It's definitely interesting to see how so few changes to a character's costume design can completely change the look and feel of a character. What do you think of the Earth 2 Superman look by artist Jim Lee? Do you like it better than his current costume? Are you looking forward to the introduction of Earth 2 into DC Universe continuity?

I can't help but wonder if Superman and Batman on Earth 2 are even Clark and Bruce, they both look pretty young. I know that this isn't necessarily going to be like the old Earth 2 but they have said that Huntress is Helena Wayne right so Bruce has to at least be old enough to have a grown daughter. I wonder if Batman is going to be Dick (that way we can have a world where Dick is Batman) and if Superman is going to be a young protege of his. Kon-El or Mon-El maybe. Perhaps Helena was Robin after Dick but when Dick became Batman she became Huntress, something similar could have happened with Supergirl becoming Power Girl after someone else took over the mantle of Superman.

Ok, I've said a lot of things about the Earth 2 designs, good and bad, but this is the absolute worst, especially considering the description. A Batman who kills kind of guts the entire 'mood' Earth 2 used to convey, and many fans assumed would convey. It was an awesome design, but not an 'Earth 2' design.

Supergirl's gave me no strong feelings one way or the other about 'Earth 2', but looked kind of nice. (As a design. The art style was bad.)

Robin's gave me exactly what I was expecting to feel from 'Earth 2.'

But all of this can be thrown out the window because 'NEW 52!' But this line of thinking can only go so far. It's been confirmed to include classic JSA characters like Jay Garrick, and Alan Scott. THIS is why Earth 2 WILL go for a certain degree of what it used to be. Jay Garrick and Alan Scott are characters who rely on nostalgia far more than others. When I was a new reader, it took me a while to grow accustomed to them, and actually develop any interest in them whatsoever. Because I KNEW they were relics. They were the outdated prototypes for Wally West, Barry Allen, Hal Jordan, John Stewart, Guy Gardner, Kyle Rayner; etc. They're appeal relies on nostalgic value more than their current counterparts. This isn't to say they should be eliminated or that they're not interesting, but its much harder for new readers to latch onto them because they have the newer, more hip and modern versions more readily accessible and out there. Earth 2 is a universe for old fans. There's no two ways around it. Thus, they definitely have to keep a certain degree of nostalgic 'Golden Age' style to it, because Earth 2 is a series for the people who already want it. It isn't meant to reach for new fans as strongly as the rest because of what it is.

So why does this make Superman's design so terrible? He looks too young. He's slim, sleek, hair gelled up, etc. So why is Lois Lane dead? If she was murdered, it's the final nail in the coffin, and it will mean the failure of Earth 2 as a series. Because if Lois was murdered, Bruce is willing to kill, the Amazons are all dead; it means this is a darker and edgier universe. Which would be fine IF IT WASN'T EARTH 2. Because we know we're getting Jay Garrick and Alan Scott and such, Earth 2 already has a bigger hand in the 'old fan' pool then it does the 'new fan' pool. But if its all darker and edgier, a lot of the 'old fan' pool will dry up. I'm willing to give it a shot no matter what; I'm not saying it won't be good if its darker and edgier. The problem is that it wont SELL as well as it should because it's trying too hard to balance nostalgia with new ideas. New readers want new ideas but not the retro characters. Old readers want the retro characters, but not the darker and edgier stuff because it goes against the very core of the retro characters.

Lois being dead could have worked, but Superman would need to look OLD. Gray hair and such; essentially THE SUPERMAN OF EARTH 2 FROM INFINITE CRISIS. Why? BECAUSE LOIS DIED OF OLD AGE. Superman outlived her, but in a world that old fans assume and want Earth 2 to be, this would make Superman more of a wise old 'Morgan Freeman' man, but if she was murdered, he's going to be more brooding and short tempered. He'll have lost his anchor to his humanity. And more importantly, we already have a more brooding Superman over in Earth 1. But this Superman looks FAR too young to have outlived Lois Lane, so the best thing we can hope for is her dying of natural causes.

LONG STORY SHORT: I'm not saying Earth 2 will be 'bad' because of all these darker and edgier things. True it won't be the 'Earth 2' many people want, but it doesn't mean it will automatically be bad just because it isn't exactly what you want. But it DOES mean the series won't have a strong chance at escaping cancellation because its trying too hard to reach for 2 audiences, will alienating both of them at least a bit.

From what it said on DC's site, it appears to be Clark Kent. I was interested when the idea that it could be Dick, Conner, and Donna Troy taking their mentor's mantles after the originals were killed. But it appears that these are just going to be "darker" and/or more violent versions of the originals...which honestly, doesn't really seem as interesting or new to me anymore. Feels more like DC's attempt at their own Ultimate Universe...

Hm it's starting to look highly doubtful that I will be picking this up, I was all on board when I thought it was Kon, Donna and Dick but now, not so much.

@The Mighty Monarch: MM the problem that I notice a lot of yall folks having is that you just can't get your head around the New 52 thing. I say this because despite everything yall still have expectations and thats because you know how it WAS but DC is trying to rope in NEW people people who have NO expectations. Yall, as long time readers, have EVERY RIGHT to want a safe place where everything can be like it use to be, after all thats what got YOU into comics right? I'm sure I'd be pissed about The new 52. But gritty reboots are just the thing these days. Honestly I'm starting to think 3 earths would be in order, Gritty noob wasteland that is earth-2, A nostalgic happier earth-3, and the new 52 earth-1 at the crossroad. That said no way DC is gonna pay to make all that happen, they are gonna go to where the money is and that will be where ever we put it.

I think the Belt is much better than the New52 look, if they just slapped that onto the new suit it would be great.

That said I thought the whole appeal of Earth 2 was that it was Golden-Age World, and I see none of that appeal with anything they've shown.

I love how just like when the first wave of New 52 titles came out people complained about their personal faves not being there and now doing it again, be patient guys, so what if this isn't the JSA you knew, who's to say they won't be in this title? maybe they're saving the best for last, stop jumping to conclusions.

Like the symbol, but hope the little yellow spot on the left goes away. It makes it look like a 5 instead of an S.

Need to see a more polished version of the belt, but there's something off about it. Otherwise I love the sleekness of it and can't wait to see it in action.

Addressing the concerns about the tone of Earth-2, I think it would be wise to take a deep breath and wait until a couple of issues are out. I really doubt Batman and Superman will be turned into bloodthirsty Punisher wannabes. Give it shot it has to be better than the current Superman solo book.

Yall, as long time readers, have EVERY RIGHT to want a safe place where everything can be like it use to be, after all thats what got YOU into comics right? I'm sure I'd be pissed about The new 52.

Ok, did you actually READ everything I wrote? I very clearly pointed out that I'm interesting in Earth 2, and that it could be a good series, and the gritty reboot thing is somthing I think is annoying, but whatever, it'll get new readers.

HOWEVER. DC isn't making Earth 2 JUST a gritty dark reboot universe. They have gone out and told us it will contain Alan Scott, Jay Garrick, and the JSA etc. They're trying too hard to have it both ways, a gritty noob wasteland with the characters the old fans want in the nostalgic happier Earth. Fusing these 2 ideas together is a recipe for disaster because it alienates a decent amount of fans from both groups.

I stated very clearly that I completely understand the New 52. I KNOW they're trying to rope in people with no expectations, but I also know they're trying to rope old fans with specific expectations because they straight out told us Earth 2 will have the characters the old fans are expecting.

My POINT, which I thought I made clear in my little TO MAKE A LONG STORY SHORT I so nicely put in caps for people who might not want to read the whole thing, is that I'm somewhat ok with the idea of a gritty darker Side Universe. I don't think its the best idea, but I'm willing to give it a shot. The problem is, DC BEGAN their announcements of Earth 2 by saying it would have JSA, Alan Scott, Jay Garrick, etc; all the stuff they know the old fans want. But they're also crowding it with all this dark and gritty stuff.

I don't know how many times I can say I DON'T KNOW IF THIS WILL TURN OUT BAD OR GOOD. I'M SAYING NOTHING ABOUT THE QUALITY THIS SERIES MIGHT HAVE. What I'm saying is that it won't last BECAUSE they pulled old fans in early on, but have spent a lot of time pushing them away with the recent character design reveals. And new readers are going to be a little hesitant about some of the nostalgia stuff promised. MY POINT is that with this series DC IS trying to appeal to both groups, but I'm pretty sure its going to backfire, because a lot of their old fans have very specific expectations that are the opposite of the expectations they've created in the new fans with these design announcements. I think the two different ideas aren't going to mesh perfectly well, and the series just PROBABLY WONT SELL WELL NO MATTER THE QUALITY.

Or you could've actually, you know, read all that the first frickin' time I wrote without making me have to repeat myself but with a more pissed off and narrowly directed rant.

And this is just a minor nitpick that I don't fault you for, I'm just informing you for future reference; the main DC Universe is Earth 0. Earth 1 is where the graphic novel series' "Superman: Earth One" and "Batman: Earth One" take place.

Ok, I have a question about "Earth 2". I started reading DC titles during the birth of the new 52. I liked how the past had been thrown out, and that we were starting from scratch. It also seemed like while stories occurred at different time periods, it was all part of the same continuity. So what is this Earth 2? Is it like Marvels "Ultimates" universe?

It definitely is weird to me that they are taking Earth 2 in such a dark direction. Typically, the JSA characters lend themselves to a more lighthearted feel, but this seems to be taking it completely in the other direction. It's definitely the biggest departure from what came before, which at once make this whole thing way more interesting it. I've never really been the biggest fan of the golden age characters (mostly because they were all way before my time and were only tangentially related to the silver and bronze age characters that I grew up with), so taking them in this completely new direction is super interesting for me. Though, I think they do need some lighter stuff to balance it out at some point.

@lmothander:

It's hard to judge since we still don't know much about it yet. But the general premise is that it's an alternate/parallel DC Earth, that (appears to) contain heroes that have been operating as capes for much longer and as a result are more aggressive and battle worn.

It looks like a Younger Man because of the artistic style. Why is he still young? Well, in some versions he's immortal or extremely long-lived.
