Early Review: 'Ultimate Spider-Man' Episode 10 - "Freaky"

Spider-Man faces the mutant Mesmero. When Wolverine joins the fight, it's going to be a day both won't forget anytime soon.

Ultimate Spider-Man continues to show the adventures of a teenage Spider-Man, dealing with high school and being trained by S.H.I.E.L.D. This current take on the character is more on the zany side which allows Spider-Man to showcase his trademark wittiness while also giving us a less serious take on Marvel characters mixed with plenty of action.

The latest episode, "Freaky," airs Sunday, June 17, 2012, on Disney XD. If you haven't seen the video feature on the episode yet, it features Wolverine and the return of Steve Blum.

As you may know, this isn't the first time voice actor Steve Blum has voiced Wolverine. That's one of the things that made this episode so enjoyable. We were all saddened when Wolverine and the X-Men didn't return for a second season and it's great to have some consistency with voice actors. Especially when they're so good at certain roles. Blum has voiced so many different characters and does each so well. It's such a treat to hear his Wolverine become part of this interpretation of the Marvel Universe.

I've heard some criticism against the show's light-hearted nature. Spider-Man breaks away from the action to break the fourth wall from time to time. This happens especially when a 'new' character appears onscreen. It's a great way for viewers not completely familiar with the entire Marvel Universe to keep track of who is who.

Wolverine may seem like a strange guest star to have and we're not the only ones to question this as Spider-Man's immediate reaction is, "Wolverine, what are you doing here?"

Similar to the story originally told in ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN (which is no surprise due to Brian Michael Bendis' involvement), events lead to Spider-Man and Wolverine switching bodies. You can imagine what it would be like when each discovers the change has happened. This is reason enough to tune in. There's also another villain besides Mesmero they have to deal with. The simple fact that we can actually see Spider-Man and Wolverine in the same cartoon with Nick Fury and other characters makes me happy.

The wackiness of the show works in keeping it separated from past incarnations. There have been so many different Spider-Man animated series. Some have been great and others...not so much. But rather than give us another really good straight forward series, this keeps things fresh and light.

With this episode being based on an actual comic book issue, it's not one that would have worked in past series. This show has the potential to stand out from the others. It may not go down in television history as the greatest adaptation of a comic book character but it will be known as one of the more fun ones.

As much as I dislike this show, I will at least check this episode out, as people who say this at C2E2 said good things, even though they dislike the show as well.

And it's no the light hearted nature that's off putting, it's the lame humor, lack of an overreaching plot and the show just having bad writing (Harry becomes Venom episode, where Pete being sick has no punchline) that is hated.

@Master_Thief:  Really are sure cause they used the same voice actor from Ultimate Spidey and for JJ as well.  Plus being 17 in that episode makes him younger than Cage and Iron Fist in Ultimate cartoon version. Just confused on what makes him "REAL".  Overall a great episode and just another example at what Cap a great character.

Of all the stuff they could take from the actual comic Ultimate Spider-man, they use the 2 issue Freaky Friday filler story?

Boo.

Sounds like comicvine is kissing disney's ass.

That's supposed to mean I'm trying to convince people to watch it? Interesting. And I basically said I enjoyed the show yet you said I "made it clear" that it's for children. So...I'm trying to convince people I'm a child? Wow. And by mentioning it was entertaining, introduces characters, has action and great voice acting...that's not part of what you'd consider a "review"? Not sure what you're exactly looking for. I'm clearly not going to talk spoilers since it doesn't air until Sunday. And I'm saying it's not the greatest show. I don't see how that would be a convincing argument that everyone should watch it. I'm basically saying it was a very fun episode. Let me guess, you didn't like Batman: The Brave and the Bold either since it was more "fun" rather than serious?

And saying I'm "kissing disney's ass" sounds like you're questioning my ethics. Disney's approval or disapproval of what I think isn't even a factor or consideration.

Except Batman: The Brave and the Bold was good, they knew how to use the characters with Batman in a fun and good way Ultimate Spider-Man does not do that. Oh and even Brave and the Bold had awesome serious episodes, including having deaths on the show.

@ambigu0us:

It's not the voice that makes this Spider-Man feel like Spider-Man, but the fact that he is written more like Spider-Man rather than the arrogant, incompetent, cocky goofball in Ultimate Spider-Man. He feels more like Rex from Generator Rex and Ben Tennyson rather than Peter Parker.

@Invincible6275: That should be obvious considering Man of Action wrote most of the episodes.

As much as there is a lot of hate for this show, I found myself laughing at the wacky-ness of it all, as I've never taken this show seriously.

My purely biased hatred for this show comes from the fact that Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes got cancelled to be replaced by another Avengers series based on this show.

G-Man:

For what it's worth (not much, admittedly), I'm not loving Wolverine's costume. I agree with you that the brown palette works better than the yellow and blue in many ways...my issue is with the sleeves. Sleeves? It's Wolverine, not Wolversleeve!!

See what I did there?

Although I assume it would be a hige pain to have to draw lots of hair, especially in animation, I really think Wolverine needs to be sleeveless. Someone mentioned that this design makes him look a lot like D-Man, which is never a good comparison.

Aside from that, good review. I, for one, didn't think you were kissing Disney's ass. After all, it's been cryogenically frozen, so your lips would hurt.

This show is the worst superhero cartoon ever. Even superman of the 1940s is way better than this piece of shit. Marvel has totally ruined spider-man with this show. Except for Joung Justice and Avengers Earths Mightiest Heroes, it seems like there are no real superhero cartoons anymore.

Which is a shame because I like Generator Rex and Ben 10( the first series and the first 2 seasons of Alien Force were okay. After that it becomes unwatchable.) I know they can do better than this and that makes it worse.

Well I just watched this episode and it was... ok. Not good and not horrible. I liked that the body switching was used as a "Walk a mile in my shoes" type of thing and there were a couple of jokes that worked. That was it though, what hurt this episode and this show in general are the constant cut-away and fourth wall jokes. Seriously Paul Dini, they are not necessary, please get rid of them. I'm ok with the character introductions but that's it.

I am not the biggest fan of the show, but a mediocre Spidey cartoon beats no Spidey cartoon. Right?

I did watch the Wolvie episode and found it was somewhat humorous, probably one of the better ones so far. Although, the Wolverine design was tough to swallow. I actually like his old yellow and brown costume, but the overly stocky Logan, with the sleeves, and the tiny mask was all sorts of D-Man.

I wish EMH was sticking around, but it really doesn't surprise me with the "cinematic" stance USM has. Also, I really enjoyed Brave & the Bold.

I personally despise this show, but it has Steve Blum playing Wolverine playing Spider-Man written by Brian Michael Bendis... not even this show could make that not entertaining.

@G-Man:

"entertaining, introduces characters, has action and great voice acting"

Entertaining is opinion so to each his own. The shows does introduces characters but it alters their personalities to different from the comics. They should stay true the the characters actually personalities. The action is questionable like why does Spiderman have a motorcycle? Its like a ploy just to sell toys. What is so great about the voice acting? I'm not saying its bad but I don't see it any different from any other animated show.

That's because Man of Action is nothing without Dwayne McDuffie, he was the only good writer on that team.
