Early Review: 'Ultimate Spider-Man' Episode 10 - "Freaky"

Spider-Man faces the mutant Mesmero. When Wolverine joins the fight, it's going to be a day both won't forget anytime soon.

Ultimate Spider-Man continues to show the adventures of a teenage Spider-Man, dealing with high school and being trained by S.H.I.E.L.D. This current take on the character is more on the zany side which allows Spider-Man to showcase his trademark wittiness while also giving us a less serious take on Marvel characters mixed with plenty of action.

The latest episode, "Freaky," airs Sunday, June 17, 2012, on Disney XD. If you haven't seen the video feature on the episode yet, it features Wolverine and the return of Steve Blum.

No Caption Provided

As you may know, this isn't the first time voice actor Steve Blum has voiced Wolverine. That's one of the things that made this episode so enjoyable. We were all saddened when Wolverine and the X-Men didn't return for a second season and it's great to have some consistency with voice actors. Especially when they're so good at certain roles. Blum has voiced so many different characters and does each so well. It's such a treat to hear his Wolverine become part of this interpretation of the Marvel Universe.

I've heard some criticism against the show's light-hearted nature. Spider-Man breaks away from the action to break the fourth wall from time to time. This happens especially when a 'new' character appears onscreen. It's a great way for viewers not completely familiar with the entire Marvel Universe to keep track of who is who.

Wolverine may seem like a strange guest star to have and we're not the only ones to question this as Spider-Man's immediate reaction is, "Wolverine, what are you doing here?"

Similar to the story originally told in ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN (which is no surprise due to Brian Michael Bendis' involvement), events lead to Spider-Man and Wolverine switching bodies. You can imagine what it would be like when each discovers the change has happened. This is reason enough to tune in. There's also another villain besides Mesmero they have to deal with. The simple fact that we can actually see Spider-Man and Wolverine in the same cartoon with Nick Fury and other characters makes me happy.

The wackiness of the show works in keeping it separated from past incarnations. There have been so many different Spider-Man animated series. Some have been great and others...not so much. But rather than give us another really good straight forward series, this keeps things fresh and light.

With this episode being based on an actual comic book issue, it's not one that would have worked in past series. This show has the potential to stand out from the others. It may not go down in television history as the greatest adaptation of a comic book character but it will be known as one of the more fun ones.

@kitsokk: That's pretty ridiculous. Basically you're saying I'm incapable of having an opinion. I'm not sure if you're kidding or not but if you're questioning my ethics or credibility, then you clearly have no clue what I or this site is about.

That's supposed to mean I'm trying to convince people to watch it? Interesting. And I basically said I enjoyed the show yet you said I "made it clear" that it's for children. So...I'm trying to convince people I'm a child? Wow. And by mentioning it was entertaining, introduces characters, has action and great voice acting...that's not part of what you'd consider a "review"? Not sure what you're exactly looking for. I'm clearly not going to talk spoilers since it doesn't air until Sunday. And I'm saying it's not the greatest show. I don't see how that would be a convincing argument that everyone should watch it. I'm basically saying it was a very fun episode. Let me guess, you didn't like Batman: The Brave and the Bold either since it was more "fun" rather than serious?

And saying I'm "kissing disney's ass" sounds like you're questioning my ethics. Disney's approval or disapproval of what I think isn't even a factor or consideration.

I would enjoy the humor better if we had Deadpool as the main character if he had to break the fourth wall so many times.

I like the show. It took me a few episodes to get used to the goofiness of it. But once I did, it hasn't been a bad show.

@CaioTrubat: I do agree. There sometimes is too much 'breaking the fourth wall' for Spider-Man. But that's the direction this show goes in. And, in my opinion, sets this show apart from the numerous other versions we've had.

And let me point out I absolutely loved Spectacular Spider-Man. I so wish that could've gone on to a third season as the creators wanted.

I really don't like the design they went for Wolverine. It's like their interp of the Hulk; it really doesn't fit in with previous designs established.

Plus the colors just don't work.

@Necrotic_Lycanthrope: I'm actually a fan of his yellow and brown. It's not the 'prettiest' combo but seems to work more than the yellow and blue. That seems too bright for a character like Wolverine. The yellow and brown reminds me of the 80s and Claremont and Miller's mini.

@G-Man:

I'm a 90's baby, so the yellow and blue will always be my preference. The brown makes sense as better camouflage than the blue, but it also depends on the way the artists draw the mask and stuff.

@Necrotic_Lycanthrope: But with that much yellow, BOTH would be pretty silly in 'real life.' Yellow doesn't really say fierce to me. But I could be wrong.

@G-Man:

Hmm, maybe if they used a variant of the film Wolverine costume, but with a mask instead of his face showing all the time. The black and blue colors on that work better in a Canadian forest than the bright yellow would.

Like I've said before I'm still at the 'Meh' stage with Ultimate Spider-Man but I'll definitely give this episode a watch, I really enjoyed Spidey and Wolverine switching bodies in the comics and the bits I've seen of this episode actually made me laugh. Once again they get great voice actors for the characters; I've been a big Steve Blum fan for a long time (Big O and Samurai Champloo are where I first heard him) and his Wolverine is amazing. I actually didn't know he voiced Wolverine on a recent X-Men show...which I didn't know existed. So hooray knowledge!

Just to clarify, I didn't even know Mesmero existed when I came up with this Internet handle as a child. I knew about the X-men but I didn't know that they featured a villain with that name until I saw him in the X-men Evolution cartoon years later. I just wanted an alias that sounded like a magician or a hypnotist and I've used the name ever since. In retrospect I'm glad I ended up spelling it with a "Z".

"I've heard some criticism against the show's light-hearted nature"

I laughed at the part of the review, because every comic fan seems to hate the show and the reason isn't the humor, it's the characterization of Spider-man as a complete f***ing douche

@G-Man: I think the problem people have is that the whole "With Great Powers comes Great Responsibility" angle is completely lost with this show. Also it doesn't also help that Ultimate Spider-Man doesn't have much in common with comic it's based on except for the setting.

But still, i do find good things in Ultimate Spider-Man like the animation and the character designs by Paolo Rivera. Also i do feel that a mature cartoon can still have silly things like switching bodies with someone episode, just look at JLU and the switch between Flash and Lex Luthor. Best episode ever.

(Also i do love Batman the Brave and the bold but you can't base your argument on that).

Well, this reviewer is just giving his opinion and I will wait to watch the episode to see whether I agree or disagree with it. This series does have potential but I think it's going about things the wrong way. However, I do love Wolverine and I love Steve Blum playing Wolverine so I will give this episode a chance.

Reviews are merely opinions.

If a reviewer's point of view upsets you that much, go elsewhere. There are plenty of other review sites out there, (some good, some not so good) but if you're only going to provide snide, thoughtless remarks instead of constructive criticism, why even bother to post?

You're just as bad as a troll at that point.

I had a lot of reserves about this show and how they used some of the characters but after a few episodes you start to look past the childish nature. This is a great Spider-man cartoon and it really reminds me of the comics the way they portray his character(not the story lines). Most spidey shows come off as forcing you to feel sorry for Parker because his life sucked so bad or barely being able to take anything serious. This has a nice mix of both. This is something a fan could enjoy and also watch with their kids as well. I do hate some of the voices though.

You do realize that Marvel re-dubbed Bell's voice over the previously recorded voice of Josh Keaton (Spectacular Spider-Man), right?

Of course you do.

I don't see what that has to do with anything. Bell is the one you hear in Avengers not Keaton.
