Early Days of Peter Parker Explored in AMAZING SPIDER-MAN: YEAR ONE

Year One: Learning to Crawl looks back at Peter's early days as Spider-Man.

No Caption Provided

Some big news for Peter Parker fans today as SFGate announced that coming in May, writer Dan Slott, along with artist Ramon Perez, will explore the early days of Peter Parker adapting to his new spider-powers in the story THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN, YEAR ONE: LEARNING TO CRAWL.

This five-part story, which begins on May 7th and concludes in September, will deal with Parker's early days of juggling his new-found powers, home life, and school life, and it will define how he became that clever, one-liner spewing hero that fans love and embrace.

Slott had this to say, in his interview at SFGate, about the early days of the AMAZING SPIDER-MAN comic:

"When you're looking at things in those issues, you're going: 'Wait a minute! How did this happen? How did he get this? Where did this come from? Why didn't Aunt May ever wonder about that?'..You start looking at it closer and closer and you go, 'There's a story here that we're not seeing... A very pivotal and crucial story that lovingly respects everything that went on but tells you more, so much more about Spider-Man and so much more about Peter Parker."

Slott has hinted there may or may not be a new villain within this story that may or may not be Parker's peer. This seems to be the focus for Parker during his year one adventure.

"He's got his first villain who is his own age, someone that he's inspired" instead of clashing with The Vulture or Doctor Octopus or the Lizard, all of whom were adults and authority figures... He's a troubled teen hero fighting a troubled teen villain!"

THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN, YEAR ONE: LEARNING TO CRAWL, written by Dan Slott, with Ramon Perez on art and Alex Ross creating the covers, hits comic shelves and the Internet on May 7th.

Hmmm... May 7th. You would think that would be a convenient time for a release if a movie or something was coming out

You know, to cash in the success of the film...if a movie was coming out.

Because Marvel wouldn't be getting full royalties from said film, they might release something easily accessible for new readers so they can get in on some $$$

Seriously, there is a movie coming out.

As a person who worked for years in a comic book store, and Corey will attest to this, movies don't bring in new readers and film tie ins rarely do well. Very VERY few people walk about of a comic book movie and say "I want to see that in comic book format!" Sad, but true.

Every like five to ten years, we really do need these books, to show new readers what might of happened, or even to slightly update their origins with the times. Like the Fantastic Four, they originally went to Outer Space because Reed wanted to be the first man on the moon, that just doesn't hold up nowadays lol

Yeah, but how will this fit into continuity with Byrne's Spider-Man: Chapter One; Busiek's Untold Tales of Spider-Man; and the other Spider-Man origin stories?

Wasn't this like a thing that was done in the late 90's and the early 00's?

But back then it was an ongoing series, I belive it was called something like "untold stories of Spider-Man" or some other shit like that.

Really? That surprises me, I guess because it's how I got into comics.

Reading more about the characters on wikipedia and the awesome storylines and then wanting to read the actual comics.

More so when I realized comics were a medium and not just the superhero genre.

@vegandiet: Good question. I have little doubt he will take those early issues of ASM and take an even bigger arrogant crap on them than Byrne did with "chapter one". Busiek's Untold Tales was reverent and told excited (amazing) new stories but the rest of this well needs to be left alone. Especially is Dan SLott is evolved. Ugh. Stupid marvelnow.

This is ridiculous. I'm utterly baffled by this. You seriously think that releasing a new graphic novel has anything to do with attracting new readers? Think about it. Your proposing that Marvel will make more money if there is a new book in the comic book shops when new readers become curious, implying that they will make less money if there is not a new book on the shelves. Think about this.

Customer: "That movie sure was fun. I've always loved Spider-Man. Maybe I should check out the comics.

Employee: "Can I help you find anything?"

Customer: "Yeah, I would like to read some Spider-Man."

Employee: "Alright, let me show you the Spidey section. I would personally recommend this, or this, or my personal favorite, this."

Customer: "Umm, did any of these come out like, today?"

Employee: "I don't think so, but this trade is just a couple weeks old, and this trade is from maybe last month."

Customer: "Yeeeaaah, uuuuummm. Nevermind. I'll just leave now."

Me: "....Seriously?"

I kind of feel this way. The multiple "Year One" or "Zero Year" type things are played out at this point for me. We've seen Peter's early years, and we've seen flashbacks. We've even had "untold adventures". We had the same origin story re-told in the Ultimate pages. I like how they are trying to put a bit of a new spin on it, but as a huge Spidey fan, I feel like this is wasted. I'd rather an "untold story" than a re-telling of his early career. He was a teenager for damn near twenty or thirty years if I recall, wasn't he?

Peter graduated from high school in ASM #28 and then enrolled in college. So he actually grew up really quickly for a comic book character back then.

You know, it's funny. For all of 2013 and some of 2014 we had fans complaining to bring Peter back and when he is they're complaining about there being too much of him. It's almost like the fans are saying they want him alive but not to have any comics. :P

This is not needed. We literally got an updated origin 2 years ago with Season One. Plus it's Slott so I'm not expecting much from it. Also this is what the third book Slitt will be working on this year? Dude needs to work on one book at a time and focus on that, to make sure it's the best quality.

I can't believe people are actually arguing this all isn't an obvious effort to cash in on the movie. I don't care if you've "worked in a comic store" or not. This is just common sense.

@daltonmunnal: I don't understand what you're trying to say.

I'm saying that putting out a new Spider-Man book at the same time as a new Spider-Man movie does not help sell more books. After somebody sees the new movie they're either going to decide to start reading the comics, or they're not. They're either going to walk into their local comic book shop and grab a Spider-Man book, or they're not, and the existence of a brand spankin' new book, or lack thereof is not going to change their decision. Nobody who isn't already planning to start reading comics is going to change they're mind just because somebody let them know that a new book just came out that day, and nobody who IS planning to start reading them is going to change their mind because there isn't a brand new book out.

Care to explain how putting out a new book simultaneously with a new movie will actually get extra sales for that book? You think it's common sense, but I can't for the life imagine the situation where the existence of a new book released closely with a new movie, when there are already hundreds of Spider-Man books, actually helps convinces a new reader to pick up a new comic. Or how the movie helps a current reader decide to buy a new book that they wouldn't have already bought anyway. I really just don't see it. I'm going to buy this book, but I'm telling you, if I weren't planning to buy it, the fact that it happens to be closely released to a new movie wouldn't change my mind.

I think he did spend quite a while in college. His high school tenure by comparison was only two years and a few months which showed how Peter grew up alongside the readers of Spider-Man as well. At least I think that's what Stan Lee meant for the event to signify IMO.

They do. Mostly for limited series/creator-owned series: Watchmen, V for Vendetta, Sin City, Road to Perdition, History of Violence, Hellboy, The Walking Dead and etc.

@tigerkaya: were not talking about them were talking about Peter, and the fact that SpiderOCK is going away, one of the most interesting takes on Spider-Man I have ever seen which actually got me into Spider-Man, in favor of going back to the status quo and Retelling the same origin. So don't try to change the subject
