Dynamite Entertainment Announces New 'The Shadow' Ongoing, Ross, Cassaday To Provide Covers

Now that the title is touting a star-studded lineup of cover artists, will The Shadow step out of the darkness and into the lime-light?

Who knows what yearning lurk in the hearts of pulp fans?

Apparently, Dynamite Entertainment.

After a sixteen-year absence from having his own book, popular comic, television and radio hero The Shadow will be getting his own ongoing series through the company. The title will boat a number of the comic industry's top stars, including John Cassaday (Astonishing X-Men, Planetary), Alex Ross (Kingdom Come), Jae Lee (Inhumans, Manhunter) and Ryan Sook (X-Factor), who will each be taking care of the covers.

Dynamite Entertainment is known for titles like Garth Ennis' The Boys, and adaptations of other characters like Zorro, The Lone Ranger and Robocop. They're also no stranger to pulp, as they've published comics about another masked superhero, The Phantom, (with Ross doing covers) as well.

Besides the horrendous Alec Baldwin film from 1994, The Shadow's mainstream audience seems a bit limited; if there's anything that will ruin a taste for a character, it will be a bad film adaptation. However, I've always felt that work with pulp heroes lack from an update to a modern audience, or even writing style - they remain mired in this kind of nostalgic muck where the die-hard fans are satisfied, but newcomers are unwelcome.

Perhaps this new series will be the jumping-on point that new readers are looking for; if anything, there are plenty of names attached that will get the ball rolling. Sadly, there was no information pertaining to a release date or who will actually be writing the series, so we'll have to keep you posted.

I LOVE THE SHADOW. I can't wait to get new comics about Lamont Cranston and hopefully his relationship and partnership with Margo Lane will be in the book too. I wish I had the movie seriaql (yes I like them too). I have some of the radios I jst bought 110 episode disc from a dealer at Motor City Con. Movie could have been better butit is passable and Kalutta's run in the 70'sw at DC was impressive.

It's about f'in time !!!!! I've been waiting for this for ages, just wish it hadn't been Dynamite... they better not make it suck like they did Zorro or boring like the Lone Ranger or Green Hornet, haven't read their version of the Phantom yet so I'm hoping that is good also.

And the movie was freaking awesome !!! any movie with Tim Curry in it is golden.

I'm adding this to the pull list.  My only concern, is Dynamite's incessant need to fill half their Comics with Previews and adds for their other comics, completely wrecking the flow of the story of the comic you are trying to read.

Otherwise, The Shadow, one of my favorites.

I would add this to my pull list, but Dynamite is putting out to many titles that I currently collect, if I drop any of my current titles like Savage Hawkman or Green Hornet I will pick this up once they release it.

Interesting. Dynamite hangs right there with IDW in my book right now. This will be given some thought.

They better NOT update it. The Shadow should stay set in the 1930s, his best period. Let's face it, this is Dynamite, so it HAS to be better than DC's First Wave/DOC SAVAGE (even if the covers were phenomenal). If this is as good as GREEN HORNET YEAR ONE, it should be another great title from Dynamite.

I gotta say, I'm a huge Shadow fan. Pretty much every iteration is near and dear to my heart for one reason or another. From the radio shows with the Mercury Theater crew.  The 70s DC book with Denny O'Neil & Kaluta/Robinson/E.R. Cruz.

 E.R. Cruz' The Shadow
 E.R. Cruz' The Shadow
The 80s rendition by Chaykin, Helfer & Sienkiewicz/Baker where they turned Kent Allerd (a.k.a. Lamont Cranston) into a sociopathic killer with a blood thirst for justice. He's a real man of mystery whose true identity is known to no one. No matter when this book is set, I'm on board to see where it's headed.

Well, it's probably a good thing you don't read Marvel or DC Comics then.  Dynamite's no worse than any other company.

Don't know how Comic Vine missed this story, but CBR reported that Dynamite has also acquired the rights to another pulp hero, The Spider (which I guess means the Moonstone title of the same name will be coming to an end, as The Phantom did when Dynamite acquired the rights to that). Looks like they ARE updating The Spider, but nevertheless this looks pretty cool. They've gone back to the movie serial for the look of this incarnation of The Spider.
