Dynamite Announces New The Shadow Ongoing Series by Garth Ennis

Does Ennis know what evil lurks in the hearts of men?

Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men? The Shadow knows!

Dynamite Entertainment has announced an new ongoing series with The Shadow beginning April 2012. To spice this up a bit, they have Garth Ennis on board as the writer. Ennis will be joined by artist Aaron Campbell and the series will feature covers by Alex Ross, Howard Chaykin, Jae Lee and John Cassaday.

The series will be set in 1938 and the Shadow will retain the pulp magazine/radio feel but told in a way only Garth Ennis can.

Here's what Ennis had to say:

The Shadow is probably the last established character I like that I haven't gotten around to writing yet, certainly on this side of the Atlantic. It makes a kind of bloody, bullet-riddled sense: I always had a feeling our paths would cross sooner or later.

Check out the other covers for issue #1.

In the first issue of the ONGOING SERIES, it's 1938 and The Shadow returns in a tale of blazing action and deadly intrigue, as a night of carnage on the New York waterfront plunges the mysterious vigilante into a conspiracy involving the fate of the world itself. As storm clouds gather across the globe, American Military Intelligence meets with a certain Lamont Cranston, determined to beat a host of spies and assassins to the greatest prize of all... but what that might be, only the Shadow knows. Be sure to get The Shadow #1 in April 2012!

Good to see that it is set in the proper time period.

That explains why Dynamite is having David Liss write The Spider in modern times. The characters are a little too similar to have both set as period pieces.

Cannot wait to read both comics.

@jsphsmth: They also chose the original time period in Flash Gordon. I think it's great that they retain the original feel rather than try to update it to modern times.

I agree although The Spider still seams interesting even though it's getting up dated, as long as it still has the same feel.

I've been completely unable to read Ennis' stuff since I made the mistake of flipping through the Crossed trade. I just can't do it.

Judging by Black Panther and Mystery Men, I trust David Liss to write a good pulpy comic.

@spiderbat87: The last time I read the Green Hornet comics was when Now was publishing them in the late 80s/early 90s. I loved them.

I kind of avoided the current series because I thought the movie would negatively influence them. Should I have picked them up? I had been considering the trades until the DC reboot doubled my monthly pull list.

Well that's the thing, I was going to ask you for advice. I want to get in Green Hornet but I don't want any of the movie related stuff so I don't know what to get.

I like Garth Ennis and all but how is this going to be that much different than Preacher or The Boys?

Except the time period this seems like a one man The Boys...

@spiderbat87: Too bad. I think our pull lists are similar. Maybe somebody else will be able to answer the question.

Looks interesting. I just might have to pick this issue up.

@jsphsmth: I preferred Green Hornet: Year One over the modern day Green Hornet but both were pretty good reads. I could not tell that the movie had any influence on the comics, other than re-introducing the character. Then again I did not read Green Hornet back in the day so I have nothing to compare it to.

Love that Jae Lee cover! Aaron Campbell's work on Green Hornet: Year One was amazing. This guy knows how to draw a period piece.

As a reader of both the classic Now Comics Line and the New Dynamite GH, I can say that the modern day Green Hornet comic is a great read, but if you're expecting it to be anything like the old comics, or the TV series for that matter, it isn't. It took some getting used to since I really loved what Now did with Paul and Mishi and the whole legacy idea, but it's a fun ride.

Now, as for the news of Ennis on The Shadow. This actually worries me. I'm not sure if his penchant for over-the-top violence is going to fit well with The Shadow, and if he forces it, it might end up hurting the series.

Sounds interesting, one of the greatest comic/pulp characters still "kicking", glad to see him getting a new shot. Just hesitant regarding what the comic will cost. Dynamite has been handling some classic characters but not being classy about the prices.

I have the same worries. While I'm a fan of The Shadow in all his forms (both as Lamont Cranston, Wealthy Man-About-Town of the radio plays; Kent Allard, Two-Fisted Crusader Of Justice in the pulps; and Lamont Cranston, hybrid of the two in the film), Ennis track record with superheroes worries me. While his Welcome Back Frank storyline and his run on Punisher MAX are well remembered, there's a very good reason nobody talks about the rest of his run on Marvel Knights Punisher.
