Disney to Buy Lucasfilm

The big question is, what will this mean for Marvel and Star Wars comics?

Disney is at it again. The Walt Disney Company has acquired Lucasfilm for 4.05 billion in cash and stock. Kathleen Kennedy, the current co-chair of Lucasfilm, will become Lucasfilm's president and report to Walt Disney Studios chair Alan Horn.

In some ways, this makes sense. Disney already has a relationship with Lucas as Star Tours has been an attraction at both Disneyland and Disneyworld parks.

No Caption Provided

There is apparently also a new Star Wars movie in the works to be released in 2015. No other information is available. A new movie doesn't mean live-action. A CG Clone Wars movie was released before the TV show aired on Cartoon Network.

Other questions to be answered are what will happen to the Dark Horse Comics? Will Star Wars comics return to Marvel? What will happen to the Clone Wars TV show on Cartoon Network? Will everyone simply hate on both Disney and Lucasfilm over this announcement?

Update

Apparently some are reporting that the movie is "Episode 7." (Why aren't they using Roman Numerals?) Episodes 8 and 9 would follow.

Update 2

Mike Richardson, president of Dark Horse, said,

Star Wars' will be with us for the near future. Obviously, this deal changes the landscape, so we'll all have to see what it means for the future.

The thing is, Star Wars and Indiana Jones already flew off the rails. Even if Disney comes in and 'mouse-ifies' everything, it's not as though these series were on particularly high notes anyway.

It's not as if some executive at Disney's going to make worse creative decisions than post-1995 George Lucas.

@Jonny_Anonymous: Well I can understand your point on that because when Disney takes control of star wars,all this will mean is that Goofy And mickey will be star wars themed and the franchise will eventually end for the fans who saw the movie and the 6 year olds who go to disney world will have another collectible.They won't know who it is,they will just know that it is Goofy/mickey/Donald (their favorite character).

NO! No no no no no! Ever since Disney's bought Marvel we've had crap story arcs like Fear Itself and AvX! I can't bear to think what they'd do to my beloved Star Wars universe.

the overreactions in this thread are hilarious....Marvel hasn't changed one bit since they were bought by Disney....Disney has left them completely alone...anything bad that's came out of Marvel since the purchase is just Marvel putting out bad books....all this does is allow Disney access to Lucasfilms's vast resources and the other way around as well...George Lucas hasn't done squat with the franchise since the HORRIBLE prequels other than the Clone Wars series which has been done in house at Lucas Films so that shouldn't change at all.....all this does is allow other directors and other writers access to the franchise and that's a good thing...let someone with a fresh outlook take over the series and see what happens

also Disney owning "everything" isn't a bad thing at all again it allows all of the companies that they've purchased access to huge amounts of resources

@Amazingoctus:

Disney have not done Marvel any good yet. To me they inherited Avengers from Paramount . It was Paramount studios that laid down the foundation for the avengers not Disney. Disney just took credit, we will see how phase two turns outs since disney is now in control of the Marvel movies.

@Spideycap: Disney don't let bad movies come out under their name, what about the last two Pirates films, the Brvae, Car 2, National Treasure, and that mars movies they put out.

Agreed 100%, It's almost like people want to see Disney mess up marvel just so they can have something to complain about.

Marvel hasn't changed one bit, Disney has left them alone. Heck look at the new Deadpool film coming out, by the looks of it it's going to be a hardcore M rated video game. If Disney is as controlling as they say then why are letting that happen?

People need to learn to stop being so pessimistic and think of the glass as half full.

But I hope Dark Horse can keep the rights. The recent Star Wars comics have been incredible (looking at Darth Vader and The Ghost Prison)

Wow, for the comics wouldn't mind keeping them at Dark Horse, alot of companies own something but contract out. Even some Marvel shows are on CN and Nickelodeon. I read this might even be the last season of Clone Wars so no issue with CN if that holds true. Though Lucus wrote specifically that nobody can ever make 7,8,9 even put a clause that even after death.

I remember when companies like Disney, Lucasfilm, and others were pretty cautious about when and where they put stuff out. Treated their multi-million dollars properties with respect. Then you fast forward to today where there's a Star Wars parody on the terrible Family Guy complete with the original music. It just kills a man inside. I saw Jedi as a kid and it was the coolest thing I'd ever seen (or thereabouts). It had a magic to it. I don't see that ever happening again because it seems the whole movie industry is consolidating or being bought up.

I'm just saying.

I heard about this on the radio not 20 minutes ago, and WEPT OPENLY in traffic. Because if GEORGE can't leave his own shit well enough alone, why would Disney?! If they REALLY want to make Star Wars movies set them in the Old Republic, or BEFORE the Republic, show how all those planets got together, or how the Jedi council formed, or how the first person discovered the Force, and created the Jedi (or it's precursor) or how the Light and Dark sides first split… so many other BETTER stories to tell that WON'T RUIN ANYONE'S CHILDHOOD

@Fettssaid:

NO! No no no no no! Ever since Disney's bought Marvel we've had crap story arcs like Fear Itself and AvX! I can't bear to think what they'd do to my beloved Star Wars universe.

I'm pretty sure that's just a coincidence.

I read that since it's Lucasfilm as a whole it's not just Star Wars that's affected, Indiana Jones is as well, and Disney has Indy attractions too. Plus, it seems that they won't be stopping with just another SW Trilogy, but making it into something like the James Bond franchise with movies every year or so to keep the franchises alive.

So Marvel wasn't enough for Disney eh?

This reminds me of an article (a few actually) I read years ago talking abut how Disney announced they would stop making "princess" films and wanted to marked more to the young boys demographic. In this aspect Marvel was a great move, this seems like overkill.

But if it's to preserve the IP and pass it on I guess it works.......oh and

Well im going to take this with a nice positive view (as my negativity and anger, which the internets has deemed a necessary requirment for talking about anything star wars related with isnt the original trilogy, has been spent. plus all thoes dark thoughts lead to the dark side). With "the tradgic tale of darth vader" over i wonder what the over arching storys going to be. where is it going to be placed in the time line, my guess is between the current story of where luke is in banishment and before the legacy era. May the force be with you disney. always.

Curious if George Lucas is going to be involved with the writing for this supposed new Star Wars film. If it isn't live-action, pretty much not interested but if it is I am intrigued to know how it will be handled and by whom exactly. Wait and see I guess.
