Directors We Want for Comic Book Movies and Shows

There's a lot of new comic book goodness on the way and we think some directors would be a fantastic fit.

It's a great era for comic book movies. It wasn't too long ago that good projects were few and far between, but now there's a handful of them each and every year. That alone is worth celebrating, yes? To make matters even more exciting, the future is looking very bright for comic book movies. Marvel Studios is taking major steps to expand its universe, DC is finally establishing the Justice League, the X-Men are back on the right track, and there's so much more potential elsewhere, too. With so many appealing movies right around the corner, we can't help but think about which directors will be attached to various projects in the years to come. It's pretty unlikely many of the following suggestions will happen (some are far too busy with other movies) and it's unclear if several of these movies will even move forward, but hey, why not have some fun wondering about it, right?

Green Lantern

It's uncertain whether another Green Lantern movie will be made, but if they're expanding the new DC Cinematic Universe and forming a Justice League, we need to hold onto hope they'll give the space cops another shot. If that does happen, Neil Blomkamp seems like the right creator for the job. The man behind District 9 and Elysium has proven he can create great character-driven sci-fi experiences. If Warner Bros. wants someone to help expand this cosmic stage, Blomkamp has proven he can create engaging science fiction and on a limited budget, too. If there's a director in Sector 2814 that can do the Green Lantern mythos justice, I'd have my money on Mr. Blomkamp.

Iron Fist

Iron Fist is heading to Netflix and one director would be a perfect fit: Gareth Evans. The mastermind behind The Raid franchise is without question one of the best action directors out there. He knows how to creatively present action scenes which make you feel every hit and he delivers some of the most clever shots out there (e.g. how the car chase was handled in The Raid 2). He's more than proven he can direct some of the best hand-to-hand fights you'll ever watch, but The Raid 2 also showed he can handle a more lengthy narrative, too. The only potential issue would be how much graphic content Marvel would let him dish out, but given his excellent directing abilities, I'm sure he could find a way to make impactful fights while also not going totally over the top in this regard.

Deadpool

Okay, it's clear Edgar Wright won't be collaborating with Marvel Studios any time soon, but what about Fox? Many directors come to mind while thinking about a Deadpool solo movie (especially Robert Rodriguez and Martin McDonagh), but Edgar Wright's brilliant style would actually be a pretty spectacular fit for Wade Wilson. He's more than capable of filling every scene with a variety of huge laughs (both verbal and physical), doesn't shy away from violence (you've seen Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz, right?), and can most certainly handle a focus on a disturbed lead. Plus, The World's End revealed that Wright can do a stellar job creating thrilling and crowd-pleasing melees. We know Wright can bring the funny. We know Wright can bring the action. And we know Wright can bring a compelling story. He's a gifted director and would be a fantastic choice for Deadpool movie. Now it's just a matter of actually getting the ball rolling with the project...

Mystique or Gambit solo

Matthew Vaughn's a mighty fine director. He did a great job bringing Mark Millar and John Romita Jr's Kick-Ass to life in the first film and then he did the seemingly impossible: he put the X-Men franchise back on the right track. After X-Men: The Last Stand and X-Men Origins: Wolverine, expectations for Fox's mutant franchise took a dive. Vaughn's X-Men Origins: First Class proved there was still hope for the property and it was a thoroughly enjoyable period piece (it's worth adding he had limited time making it, too). Vaughn helped write the very excellent X-Men: Days of Future Past as well. He's invested time in this franchise and has played a key role in expanding it, so he seems like the perfect fit to boost its next big characters: Mystique and Gambit. Wolverine's received plenty of focus and the Professor X/Magneto dynamic continues to unfold well, but with the star power behind these two mutants (Channing Tatum, Jennifer Lawrence), it's obvious they'll begin to expand the role these mutants play. And, if they do indeed move forward with a solo film for either, Vaughn's resume proves he'd be a solid fit.

Black Panther

No Caption Provided

A Black Panther movie needs to happen. It's as simple as that. The character has such a rich mythos and is downright awesome. His inclusion would definitely bring some more depth to the expanding Marvel Cinematic Universe. If you're going to unleash a Black Panther movie, it needs to be really good and generate massive interest in the character. He has the ability to turn into one of the MCU's big heroes, after all. And if you're looking for a well-made and entertaining movie, Brad Bird absolutely has what it takes. His phenomenal work with The Iron Giant and The Incredibles proves he can fit Marvel Studios' style. He can create ridiculously enjoyable material that's full of heart, excitement, and laughs. But if you're afraid he wouldn't make a good transition to live-action or fear he's to family friendly for T'Challa, you should be happy to know he directed Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol, a PG-13 action movie which definitely earned its rating at times.

Wonder Woman

If you're going to give Wonder Woman her own movie, it needs to be epic. It has to show the general audience why Wonder Woman's a character that warrants their focus. It also needs to unveil Diana Prince's mystical world and hit us with some major displays of action. Ridley Scott has experience with all of those elements. Blade Runner shows he can craft a character-driven experience in an engrossing and unique world. Gladiator and Black Hawk Down undoubtedly prove he can handle a variety of crazy action scenes. And, since this new DCU has sci-fi elements, let's not forget his work with a little movie called Alien. A Wonder Woman movie needs to drop jaws and Ridley Scott certainly has the potential to do just that. If he were behind this, you can bet it'll have character, worldbuilding, and intensity.

Do you agree with any of these pairings or do you think there's a better director out there for some of these gigs? Don't be shy, share your thoughts with us below!

You see this yet? Kingsman: The Secret Service Official Trailer #1 2014 - YouTube, looks pretty good. Especially since its the same exact formula for the original Kick-Ass. Millar, Vaughn, Goldman, Mark Strong, etc. Add in Alfred from the batman movies, it looks great. I have yet to read the comics its based on.

@vortex13: Antoine Fuqua and RZA are both very interesting choices!

@k4tzm4n: I liked SotD and loved Hot Fuzz. TWE was just a disappointment to me...saw it with a friend and neither of us found it terribly funny, but asyou say, each to their own. I just checked and am surprised how popular it is on RT, so guess I'm in the minority on not liking it.

I've seen The Raid, although not the sequel. Don't get me wrong, I think it's a stellar fight movie. But I don't think it's necessarily better than a lot of other action movies...I think it is just the most recent to get hype. I don't see it as any better (fight choreography wise) than Ong Bak, Ip Man, Unleashed or even The Matrix.

What would be your thoughts on an Oliver Stone directed Wonder Woman movie vs a Ridley Scott directed Wonder Woman movie? I'm curious, mainly because I think Stone gets less credit than he deserves.

Any chance something like this could be an ongoing feature? Perhaps a fancast type of thing?

Johns had nothing to do with it. Byrne, Perez and Messner-Loebs all used the Diana Prince identity during their runs, and her DEO job as Diana Prince was by Alan Heinberg.

By leagues. No comic film has come close to that level of acting since TDK. If McAvoy doesn't get an academy nom, I'm going to be disappointed. Between the scene with him and Magneto in the plane...his delivery of the "I didn't trade my powers for my legs, I traded my powers so I could sle---" and his scene with Patrick Stewart...dude completely blew it out the park.

And although I doubt it will, i think it deserve a best picture or at least best director. The 3rd act was brilliant. The duality between the past and the future and the smooth transitioning was just wonderful film making.

Its not perfect, (no movie is) but its very, very good. I have zero major problems with it.

@fallschirmjager: I don't have major problems with it either, but an astounding number of nitpicks. It tried a little to hard to be political, the use of "70s cam" got old after a while, and it seem to have no fun, other then Quicksilver of course, who I knew would be awesome. Don't get me wrong the movie was enjoyable and crafted excellently, but it just didn't "do it for me" like First Class did. I am very happy at the return of the old cast though, hopefully Cyke and Rogue will be treated better in the next installment.

@saren: Perez did away with it and only brought it back in a blink and you'll miss it issue, of course after an issue in which Diana scoffed at the moronic idea of her having a secret identity when Myndi Mayer suggested it to her.

Well, you should prepare for that right now because actors and actresses in comic book movies rarely get nominated for any top tier awards, much less win them if nominated, lol. I understand heath ledger won, but I think that had a lot to do with his passing.

I don't agree, I think it was one of the most balanced CBM's to date. There was plenty of fun (subjective emotion...) other than QS. Wolverine fighting Beast, Blink's powers, Magneto's stadium feat (I was wetting my pants).

While I think First class was very good, my problem with it is: while I thoroughly enjoy Erik and Charles, I find myself not giving a crap about all of the kiddies. And Jennifer Lawrence really sucked as Mystique in First class (way better in DOFP). Sure she was young but it reminds me of Anakain/Vader...no one wants to see some badass as a little whiny baby.

I have nitpicks with DOFP of course. I have that with every CBM, and I don't suspect that will ever change. No movie is perfect, but still. The strengths were very, very strong. Its not just a good comic movie, is a great film. That is the type of thing we don't say enough about CBM's.

Oh...and dat end credit scene? :p. I'd rather watch that scene then half of all CBM's ever done :)

No. It happened because he gave a great performance. The reason CBM's don't get nominated for academy awards is because most of them don't deserve it

McAvoy does.

@fallschirmjager: I agree that heath did once in a lifetime performance, and I personally agreed with anyone, who said that he deserved to get an award for his performance, but I feel there is some stigma towards comic book movies, in my opinion. Since they're fiction, they tend to be looked over for the major categorical nominations because majority of the nominated movies dwell in the non-fiction drama genre. If we're comparing Heath to McAvoy performance in their own movies, then I don't see any top tier award show giving a nomination for Best Supporting Actor to McAvoy. But I'm big fan of Michael Fassbender and his performance in the movies First Class, DOFP, and mainly Shame, but he didn't even get nominated in Oscars for Shame, but only in Golden Globe, where he didn't even win :(

@batsymyplaything: Eh. I felt his character wasn't given enough of a wide range in Shame to win it.

The thing with best actor awards is that most of them that win it are roles that gave you such a WIDE range of emotions. Being great at one isnt' enough, you have to be great at several. That's why you get awards for things like Gladiator, because Crowe did everything in that movie.

He got one for 12 Years a Slave though, so its whatever. He's gold, everyone knows that.

At first I read it as Gareth Edwards for Iron Fist, and didn't know where you were going with it. But Gareth Evans? Yes! Please! I don't know much about Iron Fist, but would love Gareth Evans to direct any comic book movie.

And I was actually thinking about this topic earlier today, and was thinking Ridley Scott would do a solid Black Panther flick.

Werewolf By Night, Ghost Rider and Tales of the Sinestro Corps~M Night Shyamalan

All 3 of the films above would be story heavy Sci-Fi movies steeped in the supernatural and macabre. I will be the first to admit After Earth and The Last Airbender were garbage, but when looking at his previous track record with creepy, story heavy, deep and suspenseful Sci-Fi flicks like The Sixth Sense, Unbreakable, Signs and The Village, I think that Werewolf by Night, Ghost Rider or Tales of the Sinestro Corps could be comeback films for M Night.

Daredevil, Moon Knight and Gotham City Sirens~Antoine Fuqua

Antoine Fuqua excels at gritty, dark, well acted and realistic action movies like Shooter, Training Day and The Replacement Killers. He always manages to get a badass and intense tone out of these films, and that would be PERFECT for Daredevil, Moon Knight and the Gotham City Sirens. Plus, if Fuqua could get Mark Wahlberg (Who played protagonist Bob Lee Swagger in Shooter) to play Moon Knight, that alone would make me immediately sold.

Spider-Man~James Cameron

Oh hell, I just want to see that Spider-Man movie where Mary Jane and Peter have sex on the Empire State Building. (I swear to God that was in his script. It was a dark, intense yet EXTREMELY odd Spider-Man movie that I would love to see if only out of curiosity

I didn't like Elysium, I found the plot lacking, this happens when you try too hard to force a political message into a movie.

I liked District 9 alright, but it too was more a political movie than a scifi.. this is exactly what i don't want in my GL movie. a director that only makes political movies has not purpose in making GL, I don't like politics in my comics, nor my cbms

Ridley Scott for Wonder Woman? Wtf? What about Alien, Blade Runner, or Black Hawk Down conveys anything about a Wonder Woman atmosphere?
