Director Named for Sinister Six, the Amazing Spider-Man Spin-off Film

Cabin in the Woods director gets his chance to direct some legendary Marvel baddies.

No Caption Provided

According to the Hollywood Reporter, a director has been named for the Sinister Six film, which will be a spin-off of the Amazing Spider-Man series, starring Andrew Garfield. Cabin in the Woods director Drew Goddard is finalizing his deal to direct the Sinister Six film, which he is also writing. Goddard is also writing and executive producing the upcoming Daredevil TV series pilot.

This is another step closer to Sony having a full-fledged Spider-verse with their films, as Sony recently announced they have a release date for Amazing Spider-Man 4 on May 4th, 2018. On top of that, back in December, Sony hired Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci, and Ed Solomon to work on yet another spin-off called Venom.

As for the Sinister Six, knowing what we do from the trailers, it is most likely this film will feature Electro, Rhino, Green Goblin and maybe Vulture and Doctor Octopus, as their trademark weaponry can seen in the trailer. Who is the sixth though? Could it be Venom, since he's already getting his own film? Maybe they'll go back to a classic character like Mysterio or Chameleon.

What do you guys think about Goddard directing this film? Also, who will be the members of the Sinister Six?

I thought he'd be too busy with Daredevil, who I find much more interesting than any of the Sinister Six. Hopefully Mr. Goddard doesn't get overextended. Daredevil has a lot riding on it to be a TV great like True Detective, House of Cards, or Game of Thrones.

1. I'm glad that Spider-Man (my favorite hero) is getting his own universe fleshed out as opposed to being stuffed into Marvel Studios as just another Avenger.

2. It however, boggles my mind that Venom and Sinister Six have a more clear path for their films that Wonder Woman, GL or any other DC movie.

You'd think since DC retain the rights to pretty much all there characters that they would have done something with them a long time a go.

If you would have told me 10 years ago that Spider-Man villains would have their own movie before Wonder Woman or Flash I would have laughed. Then I would have reported you to some sort of government agency for having suspiciously specific knowledge of the future. Ah well, life is random.

I think the same thing. They could have at least tried other heroes like the heroic-version of Phil Urich first.

Mr. Sinister is an X-Men villain and those movie rights belong to FOX.

Probably. I just don't see Sony taking a whole lot of care with the project. I'd really like for these movies to be good, but I'm not counting on it.

I really wonder how they are going to do this and if they're going to have an antagonist.

I don't know why some people are down on this. Yes I get that there are other characters they want to see but you shouldn't complain about them doing this like it's something wrong. Plus it's different. Everyone wants something different until it's given to them.

DC/WB is just making it harder for themselves because they try to replicate Nolan's success with the dark, realistic Batman franchise but with less talented staff...
That path doesn't work the same for all the characters (look MOS) and introducing the Justice League or characters a bit more colorful becomes hard.

To those wanting a Superior Foes movie I say this *&^% your Superior Foes. I didn't expect it but if they can replicate that awesome dynamic of The Six from Spectacular Spider-Man ep. This will be my all time favorite in Super villain movies. Here is the scene from the ep. "Group Therapy" Now if only DC would follow suit with "The Rogues" movie.

I don't understand why Spiderman's villains are getting their own movie. Are they supposed to be good guys or something? Why don't they just call it a Spiderman sequel and have them featured as the villains?????????

I actually disagree with that. I don't think it has to be necessarily "dark" or "realistic" but I DO like the tone MOS had, and I think the other films need to follow suit. You can't have one film franchise be bright, cheerful and sunny, then have another be bleak and grim and say both exist in the same world, simply because the two worlds are different. All of Marvel's films are very comic booky, bright colors, high tech gadgets, jokes and light hearted, you feel like they are all connected, DC needs that too, only make it like MOS for two reasons:

1. It differentiates it from Marvel's colorful and fun films

2. It re establishes the "Greek Gods among us" theme that DC heroes seem to have, the world is bleak, stark, everything is faded, blues aren't bright, nor are reds, and people act more like normal people (not cracking jokes while the city is being destroyed, looking at YOU Darcy...).

I didn't said it was a bad idea I only said that DC is making it harder to themselves, it is hard to make bleak, realistic movies when your source material is so colorful and out of this world. To make these movies "realistic" WB needs to take away a huge part of the characters worlds or elements, since most DC heroes aren't made to be that and not everything can be adapted to a "dark" setting without looking stup!d. Also the FACT that WB lacks the necessary talent to do it right!
MoS is an example about how not everything can be dark and gloomy, I personally liked MoS but it lacked core elements that make Superman who he is, for example I never saw him as a symbol of hope no matter how much Snyder spammed these words in the screen. But as I said, it might be the talent behind the movie not the idea.

@squalleon: Yeah, I agree with you that we didn't see Superman as a symbol of hope (besides his S meaning that, come on Snyder, you had the idea RIGHT THERE!!) but, hopefully, he grows into the Superman we know and love as the franchise continues. I also agree that we need different talent besides Snyder and Goyer on these films, but I think we can have the tone be, not necessarily realistic (one can't be with aliens, goddess and amazons) but a bit /more/ realistic than Marvel's cinematic Universe, and keep the heroes' essence. For example, to me, Flash is the definition of a Silver Age, bright and colorful hero, I think they can make his villains less out there, yet keep their characters consistent as well as make Barry more of the forensics scientist that he is, solving crimes as the Flash that he can't as a cop. Now, he doesn't have to be broody and depressed, but it'll still be believable that he's an actual person.

Sony has to keep making movies or they will lose the rights to Spider-man. Same thing happened to Fox for Daredevil and now its back to Marvel. If the studio that owns the right for a specific marvel character doesn't make a film within a certain limit, rights revert back to Marvel. Marvel got Blade, Ghost Rider, Blade, and Punisher back quite recently due to this specific criteria.

Fox actually tried to keep their right to Daredevil, but weren't able to get a movie produced quick enough, and when they asked Marvel for an extension they said no.

From what I understand, Marvel really wants all their character rights back. Hence why Fox scrambled to make all these new X-men movies, because they didn't want to lose those too. Before Marvel was bought out by Disney, the movie rights wasn't an issue, because Marvel couldn't afford to make movies like they can today, since they didn't have Disney's resources to finance a plan of this magnitude.

The most recent movie rights that has been given back to Marvel is Luke Cage, who was with Colombia Pictures.

Marvel is also currently trying to take back Namor for phase 3, but Universal won't give it back, and supposedly has a movie in the making for him.

Why are people discussing their problems with WB/DC films on an article about the Sinister Six and its rumoured director? I get your not happy (I am too but I'm patient I want to see results before jumping off the ship) and would love to be a WB executive and force all those DC films to come out. But get over it and discuss what the article is about.

@i3io_hazard:

Fleshing out a Spider-Man universe will be hard but is possibly and Sony should try it but a Sinister Six movie is so freaking stupid i gurantee less then 50% score on RT i'm guessing at tops like 42% but probbably more of 30%. Venom is a pretty good idea though but Sinister Six is freaking stupid idea for a movie. Spider-Man 2099? Scarlet Spider? Miles Morales? Could've done those which could've been awesome movies but no a freaking Sinister Six movie.
