Director Announced for Second Stand Alone Star Wars Film

Josh Trank joins the Star Wars family.

We've known for some time that Disney and Lucasfilm would be releasing stand-alone films along with the major trilogy. A couple weeks ago it was announced that Gareth Edwards would be directing one written by Gary Whitta. Today, it's been announced that Josh Trank would be directing one as well.

"We're thrilled to welcome Josh into the family," says Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy. "He is such an incredible talent and has a great imagination and sense of innovation. That makes him perfectly suited to Star Wars, and for this new slate of movies that reach beyond the core characters and storylines of Episodes I through IX."

Trank states, "The magic of the Star Wars Universe defined my entire childhood. The opportunity to expand on that experience for future generations is the most incredible dream of all time."

Trank is known for his directorial debut with Chronicle and is currently working on Fantastic Four. No word on what or who his Star Wars film will deal with.

A group of young kids carrying around a holorecorder find a holocron in a forest and discover that they are all Force sensitive. They then record themselves trying out the different Force powers they learn from the holocron until one of them turns to the dark side and the others have to stop him.

I didn't care for Chronicle… and I'm not looking forward to Fantastic Four next year. However, I'm willing to give him a chance, his style of directing could work well with Star Wars!

I hope.

I thought Chronicle was great. I would like to see him take a more unknown character and make a movie about them. I don't really want a director as creative as he is shackled to any continuity and pre-existing character personalities. I personally could see him doing a great job with a movie with the main character being a Sith or Dark Jedi. Better yet, a Jedi who falls to the darkside, but does not become a Sith, just is a Dark Jedi only looking out for himself.

No matter what he ends up doing though, I have a feeling he has to potential to make one of the best Star Wars movies to date.

I loved Chronicle and I am optimistic about F4 so I'm on board with this pick.

I miss Lucas.

I dig it.

I'm afraid that audiences will get tired of having both a truckload of superhero movie and a truckload of star wars movies; and that those movies start to get less profitable and that it stops...

He's ruining F4

I rather see a Mandalorian movie then Boba Fett movie or a Yoda movie would be awesome.

Will not be watching it, nor will I be watching any of Abrams other Star Wars fan films.

@kennybaese: It's funny because you just described Chronicle but with Star Wars stuff. That's perfect since the guy who directed Chronicle will also be doing a Star Wars movie. :D Genius!

Cool.

This guy is working on the Fantastic 4? The one franchise that Hollywood can't ever not f*ck up?

I thought JJ Abrams was directing all of them?

Edited by Nightwing4

@paranoidandroidz180: Abrams is directing all three of the new "core" trilogy. Episodes 7, 8, and 9. This is one of a couple STANDALONE Star Wars films.

@nightwing4: So full featured spin-offs? I thought these were just rumors? wow thats cool
