Dick Grayson's Post-FOREVER EVIL Fate Has Been Revealed

You might not believe this one.

We've all been wondering what will happen to Dick Grayson after FOREVER EVIL. In the first issue, his identity was publicly revealed. That doesn't leave too many options for a masked vigilante. Most of the speculation was that he would die or have his death faked in order to continue operating under a different guise.

While there have been some delays, Dick Grayson's fate has now been revealed.

USA Today has reported that Dick Grayson will become...a super-spy.

No Caption Provided

The new titles will be called GRAYSON. It will be written by Tim Seeley and Tom King, a former CIA counterterrorism operations officer. Dick Grayson will have to pretend he's dead, even to his loved ones such as Batgirl (which we saw Barbara mention in last week's BATGIRL). He will be joining the spy agency Spyral, seen in BATMAN INCORPORATED.

Dick will get a new look courtesy of Mikel Janin. No more mask. He'll have a "G" on his chest as a call back to the "R" from his days as Robin.

The first issue will be on sale July 2.

I think this sounds great. I like the creative team, and they are trying something new and bold with Dick. The unexpectedness is kind of the the appeal of it. Dick will by out of his element, and in new and uncharted territory for the character. Thats exciting to me. Plus they're picking up from what Morrison introduced in his Batman run with Spyral. And thats awesome.

Nightwing is one of my top 3 favorite characters so I hope this does well, but I just don't like it at all at the moment....

You know, for once, I don't understand the fanboy rage behind this change. Yes it's not exactly in keeping with Dick's character and motive but for this level of unchecked negativity immediately after the news is announced isn't exactly credible IMO. We fans complain that comics stay the same yet simultaneously hate the notion of anything being different about our characters. It's not as if this superspy shift is unwarranted though. Dick's identity has been exposed, he'll jeopardise the identities of the Bat Family by staying around and the spy organisation draws on influence from Morrison's previous Batman run. And reading into the interview, it genuinely sounds like an interesting move to take Dick Grayson in as a super spy. I'm not going to jump to conclusions like some people, I'm gonna wait and see how this plays out.

Finally to the naysayers of this, is this REALLY worse than DC killing off Dick Grayson? I mean is it REALLY that bad?

Nothing at all like Winter Soldier!

Well, Winter Soldier was sort of...similar to the situation with Red Hood, so....

And they even debuted around the same time Bucky came back in the January issue of 2005 and Jason came back the February issue of 2005.

But to be fair they had already teased Jason back in Hush. And WTF. People act like Winter Soldier is the only spy in comic books. Does he even have a book anymore? I quit reading all the Avengers stuff after it kept getting relaunched every 8 issues.

I sort of hope they have him run into Checkmate, HIVE, and some of the other great DC clandestine organizations. I will take all the spy stuff I can get.

This is...weird. It's like Batman would pretend dead and then start working for Amanda Waller and use guns. I seriously think this is a really stupid idea. Almost any stupid idea can be turned good if the writers are brilliant but this idea overall it really REALLY stupid. Am not looking forward to much.

1. Red Hood uses guns and Batman does nothing.

2. Batwoman uses guns and Batman does nothing.

3. Dick was trained to use guns by Batman as well as when he was in the police.

4. Not everybody that uses guns suddenly becomes a cold blooded killer.

My guess is that if this takes off, look for a new TV series next fall or the year after. Warner and DC's answer to Agents of Shield.

@jonny_anonymous: Given how controversial and fanboy rage inducing this news has been, I'm slightly surprised you're behind it as being a potential good thing. On the guns examples though, Batman may not stop Jason from using guns but it's not as if he's exactly pleased with Jason using them. Nor does he endorse Jason using guns. Still, your other points have merit.

Hey what can I say? I like spies :) An actual new direction for a character that nobody saw coming yet it kinda makes sense and the tone of the book will be the same except now Dick is fully out from beneath the shadow of the Bat and gets to do a bit of globe trotting and get's to interact with new characters and storylines that he wouldn't be able to do back home with the batfam and let's face face it, as much as I liked Higgins run Nightwing has been stuck in a rut for a while now and the creative team here is amazing.

Another cool thing about this is secret agents usually end up fighting other secret agents and mercs so this book is just prime for a Slade Vs Grayson showdown.

  • I agree with this statement, Dick is an always evolving character, his journey as a superhero reached its pinnacle when he became Batman. When DC reverted him back to Nightwing, Dick has been walking a path he already had completed and if DC doesn't allow him to become better than the Bat, then his super-hero comics would be stale.
This Spy bussiness is the perfect opportunity for Dick to continue evolving.

He used a gun as a police officer but only for intimidation, I hope he does the same here. As long as he doesn't kill, he can use a d@mn machine gun if he wants.

And in the interview King says about how unwilling and frustrated Dick will be because of Spyral's more "grey" activitives. So I don't see him change as a character.

Just because Dick and Bruce are related doesn't mean Nightwing and Batman are. For all anyone knows they just like to team up like Batman and Superman.

@lvenger: Yea Revival is a fantastic country noir horror comic, I love it. I also haven't heard of King but if he's an ex-CIA agent then that only adds to the greatness this book could be.

@jonny_anonymous: He's an ex CIA Agent??!! How did I miss that in the interview? That only adds to the authenticity. It'll be great if Dick's staunch superhero morality is contrasted with the greater good "ends justify the means" approach in the espionage industry.

Just because Dick and Bruce are related doesn't mean Nightwing and Batman are. For all anyone knows they just like to team up like Batman and Superman.

Now that Bruce has publicly stated that he funds Batman and his allies and Dick's identity has been outed worldwide, it wouldn't take a genius to start digging further into Bruce Wayne's connections with other members of the Bat Family, thus deducing who they are. Heck Joker knows who the Bat Family are, the only reason he doesn't tell is because he doesn't care.

King : "He has to save the world, but he's dealing with an organization that may go beyond his comfort zone," King says.

Seeley likes putting Grayson in this strange position, working for a group "that purports to be on the side of the angels, but clearly, there's some weird stuff going in. Their penchant for manipulation instantly makes them nefarious."

Tim has been great on all the Batbooks he's written so far,his arc in Talon used many elements from Morrisons run and did so perfectly. This book seems like a continuation of Morrisons story, infact DC should've done this when they launched the New 52.

Oh shut it jerk. How would you feel if Batman suddenly became a CIA Agent and used a gun?

Dick, Donna, and Wally are supposed to be the ciphers of the superhero community. Now there is no "community." And all of these characters are hurt because of it. Now, on top of all that, DC breaks down more of Dick's relationships by taking away all of his Bat-history.

Why didn't they just use Rick Flagg, Steve Trevor, Sergeant Rock, or Nemesis for this?

Except it's not. DC just took away another important part of Dick's identity for the next 2 years. ~24 months of no Dick Grayson Nightwing stories. Lovely.

How much more can DC divorce Dick from his old version.

DC: "We've taken his friends. We've taken his family. We've taken his identity. We've taken his history. Next month, we'll learn that 'Dick Grayson' isn't Dick Grayson. Also, he isn't even male."

When "Tim Drake" was no longer Tim Drake, we should have known no one was safe.

Next month, "Jason Todd" isn't Red Hood and was never a Robin! Read his new title Todd to follow his adventures as an air-force pilot--on--the--run.
