DETECTIVE COMICS Wins GLAAD Award

The new Batwoman and Question are honored...

At its award show last night, the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation awarded DETECTIVE COMICS its Outstanding Comic Book award for its portrayal of lesbian crime-fighters Batwoman and the Question.

Runners-up to the award include  SECRET SIX, BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER, X-FACTOR and MADAME XANADU The award's given to "recognize and honor media for their fair, accurate and inclusive representations of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community and the issues that affect their lives” and the recognized issues were written by Greg Rucka and drawn by JH WILLIAMS III and Cully Hammer.

As an aside, Rich Johnston’s BLEEDING COOL industry-insider column discusses DETECTIVE COMICS’ win as well as the start-and-stop introduction of this newest incarnation of Batwoman and the character’s paradoxical cycle of promotion and acknowledgment. I haven’t been reading titles from the Bat family lately, but apparently the character debuted in 52 and has had been inconsistently featured between that appearance and her current starring role in DETECTIVE. The new Question is Rene Montoya, who debuted in the Batman Animated series and has slowly progressed from being a member of Gotham City's police force to taking over the mantle of mild-objectivist  vigilante, Vic Sage.

You know what is wrong about this? Is that Rene Montoya is disgracing the question overcoat mantle. And Batwoman is disgracing the Bat family. Characters like these should either do one of these two things. DIE OR RESTART THEIR LIVES.

I read the title & thought it said 'GLAD Award'.  Like Batwoman was gonna go around Gotham City spreading that Pollyanna cheerful spirit :p

I hope they collect these issues in a trade.  I like Greg Rucka's writing, so I'd give this a shot (minus the monthly adverts).

Lol I've always had that feeling too Robin's early costume design was very gay back in the early years. But to each his own

Love Batwoman and the Question both. Glad they are being recognized. I really don't care if they are gay or not. They are both great characters and although they share a background they are both brilliant individually.

I know there is a lot of hate going around for both characters (Particularly from die hard fans of Vic Sage) but I personally think they are both great and worthy of recognition from not only the GLBT community but the comics community in general. I look forward to a Batwoman ongoing and (hopefully) The Question getting upgraded from a second feature to a lead in Detective Comics.

I hope for the continued success of both characters. :)

This is great. Batwoman has been an excellent character throughout the run on 'tec. I'll be sad to see her go (but happy if she gets her own series). Well done to Rucka and Williams.

You're pathetic, there is nothing wrong with people being gay or lesbian and heroes...

@KRYPTON : Our society is currently undergoing a change where these things are going to keep showing up and more frequently as the older generation withers. I think it is rather progressive that characters are portrayed in this manner because people will always be people, whether, black, white, Latino, gay, lesbian, or bi-sexual. Even homosexual preferences should be represented. I'm quite glad that they received an award for their work. good job!

Agreed. There is nothing wrong with homosexuals/lesbians being represented in culture. I have no problem with gay/lesbian superheroes.

As a lesbian comic reader I obviously think this is hella awesome. But I must admit that I have read none of either of those characters stories! I've certainly thought about picking some issues up, but I just don't know where to start or what is good. I supposed that's what the Vine is for! But if anyone has advise or a suggestion, I'm all ears!

To be honest, I couldn't care less about the sexual preference of my comic book characters. As in real life, whether they are hetero or homo, or pansexual for that matter, belongs to a private sphere I am not willing to enter. At least DC didn't base this characters on being lesbians. That would have taken much credibility from them.

I'm glad the series was prized, because JH Williams III's art is absolutely mind-blowing... although I don't really like Batwoman. I don't know, I just don't like the character. Renee is great, although a different kind of Question. She's no Vic, for sure, but nevertheless an interesting character. If it weren't for the art, I would have been enjoying the co-feature much more than the main book.

PS: BTW, not play the Devil's advocate or anything, but I don't see where Krypton said anything against homosexual characters. Maybe he was too harsh in commenting that way, but maybe it's just personal taste. He may like or dislike the characters and it may have nothing to do with their sexuality.

Well deserved! Congrats to Rucka and Williams III. I love the current series of Detective Comics. I don't think I can say the same for the Question though...

I've never been a fan of most DC comics other than Batman. If they have an ongoing series for Batwoman that I, being roughly new to DC, can understand, I will gladly pick this up.

Anyways, I'm so proud that GLAAD gave the award to two great characters.

meh, this series is so bland, along with Batwoman and Question. Scandal and Achilles are much better gay characters then those two, I would rather see them honored.

Good for Batwoman, Question, Rucka, Williams, and DC... and those who were runners up as well. As long as homosexuality isn't being used for the sake of being used, then all is fair. I've enjoyed Batwoman and Question on Detective.

@KRYPTON :
Ugh! You are such a dinosaur. Hate is so over!

It's great when lesbian, gay, and other marginalized communities are positively represented in comics. These two are great characters who happen to be lesbians. Their book is about their journey. Their sexual orientation is just a part of that.
I know Marvel did it with Northstar a while back, but there seems to be a shortage of gay male characters. Do publishers consider lesbian characters to be more palatable and marketable than gay ones?

I'm glad the homosexual community is getting fair representaion in comics, but I really miss the real question.  DC kills all their best characters...
