Details Revealed on 'XX' Teaser Featuring an All-Female X-Men Squad

Find out who is on the roster!

Last week we saw a Marvel NOW! teaser for 'XX' by Brian Wood and Olivier Coipel. The first assumption most of us made was it was another X-Men book. But why the double x's? The second guess was something to do with the female chromosome. So why not an all-female X-Men book? There are certainly plenty of great female X-Men.

Today, Marvel has released details via USA Today.

No Caption Provided

From the image we see Jubilee, Kitty Pryde, Rachel Grey, Rogue, Storm and Psylocke. Brian Wood mentions the drama begins with Jubilee bringing an orphaned baby home. What amps up the tension here is the baby might be the "key to mankind's survival." There will also be the appearance and return of a Grant Morrison-created villain, Sublime. But his showing up doesn't mean what you might expect.

Wood mentions delving into the characters to show their flaws, something not often seen in superhero books. There will also be "a lot of relationships, love and sex" in the book "in the classic X-Men way - the way it used to be."

You can read more on what Wood has to say over at USA Today. The series will simply be called X-MEN.

@lykopis: Yeah, I thought that was a little weird, but so long as it's treated well I guess it doesn't matter. I'm not so sure showing characters -- female or otherwise -- feeding "basic human urges" is necessarily praiseworthy, but to the extent that it's treated as an equality thing and not as an excuse for lots of random sex, I'm down.

@Cafeterialoca: This thread is about the new X-Men book, not Avengers Arena, in case you hadn't noticed. No need to pick on the folks saying a female mutant would be nice in a book filled with female mutants. Besides, Hazmat could end up in this book too for all anyone knows.

In Avengers Arena, killing her friends.

No. She's not.

As for this new book -- amazing. Great outfits, fantastic cover and Storm front and centre? Maybe, just maybe this will be the book I have been asking for. (Rogue, Rogue, Rogue. I can't even....)

Enough with with X-Women title. These women are X-Men. Always were. They should be and are identified as such.

Only worry is this:

Wood mentions delving into the characters to show their flaws, something not often seen in superhero books. There will also be "a lot of relationships, love and sex" in the book "in the classic X-Men way - the way it used to be."

I don't know about the love and sex aspect being "the classic X-Men way." But delving into the characters? Lovely.

The reason why that doesn't really concern me is because, if Wood has shown my anything, it's that he knows how to write multi-level drama.

Isn't the "baby savior of mankind" plot a bit too recent for Marvel to employ again? Or is it that since Hope was the savior of mutantkind, then HUmankind is open for business?

@x_29: Yes, that is exactly what I am saying. Well, aside from that part of my post where I said " I am not saying that male writers cannot write female characters" Maybe Wood can write with a interesting perspective, but it just seems like a missed opportunity to bring in a fresh strong female writer who may have a unique take on this rather than just recycling the same ole X-men writers.

But again, it is not surprising from the company that has run this franchise straight into the ground over the last 15+ years.

I don't know if she's getting her powers back. All Brian said was that she is still a vampire. Here's the page of the thread. I tried to take a screenshot, but the program I use isn't working. http://forums.comicbookresources.com/showthread.php?439260-X-Women-quot-A-LIST-HEROINES-quot&p=16465243&highlight=vampire#post16465243

Wow, an all female book...what is this the 70's? Haven't we come to a point in society where gender shouldn't be a big enough factor to base a team on? Uncanny X-Force is practically an all woman team as it is, but they haven't made a gimmick out of it. The creative team here is solid, so I have no doubt the book will turn out to be a creative and financial success, but I just don't care for the conceit.

The Fearless Defenders book has a good reason for being all females (since they are essentially becoming a new generation of Valkyries), but between that book and this X-Men reboot, it seems very clear that Marvel as a company (not the creative teams involved) has no concept of why diversity is important, and seems content pandering in a Romney-esque way to a group that they don't understand.

I want to reassert one final time that I have full confidence in Brian Wood and Cullen Bunn, just not in the decision making practices at Marvel editorial and corporate.

Marvel is now doing what they did before the NOW launch. There are too many X-men related comics and storylines going on at once. I know everyone has a favorite character but they should have a rotating cast spread across a few (3 to 4) books. Right now how many is there going to be I think the count is getting up to about 8. They have to cut the fat .

In Avengers Arena, killing her friends.

No. She's not.

Tell that to Hazmat.

Have you even read the last issue? I'm really asking because Hazmat is alive and well and it's because she's not the one stalking the group. That is who X-23 is after and who she intends to capture. She's not hunting her friends to kill them, your statements are confusing and completely untrue. At least up to this point in AA's story.

@akbogert:

Yeah, I thought that was a little weird, but so long as it's treated well I guess it doesn't matter. Exactly right. I am all for a great stories and it seems like it's going to be pursued here. Call it a reflex on my part -- when those words are put together in terms of female comic characters, it usually doesn't turn out quite the way I would hope. Your description is precisely what I will hope for/anticipate.

The reason why that doesn't really concern me is because, if Wood has shown my anything, it's that he knows how to write multi-level drama.

Okay, true, lol. If I really, really dig deep into why those words sent a little trickle of unease through me it's because of **ahem** the horror that was Rogneto. (Just saying that made me taste bile)

And hey -- doesn't Storm look gorgeous? I love her in this and it's about time. To me, that's the classic X-Men way, Storm in a position of leadership.

Lets examine your previous comment:

"I am not saying that male writers cannot write female characters, but it just seems if you wanted this comic to be something different than just a roster of "females kicking ass" you might try a different approach."

You are basically saying that if this book was written by any male writer that it will automatically be about women kicking ass with no substance, and that only a female writer can bring a unique spin to it.

I'm pretty sure that Cafeterialoca is referring to the first issue, which showed the two fighting on the penultimate day of the competition. Not that that image guarantees anything at all about the outcome of that fight or the motivations behind the panel, but chronologically that scene happens after the ones in the most recent issue. As for the (oh hey, the topic of this thread!) misgivings about sex being properly treated in a comic, that's quite understandable. Let's both hope it turns out great!

I love the idea but I HATE the way they are emphasising that this is an "all female team" and the whole XX thing. If it was an all male team it would be considered usual and that's what bugs me.

Well this is awesome... but what about these M.I.A characters: Hepzibah, Lifeguard, Blink, Boom Boom, Ariel, Frenzy, Husk, Magma, Marrow, and Stacy X?

Frenzy was seen recently in X-Men Legacy... but a few cameos isn't justice!

Husk was seen quitting the JG school because of an imbalance of her mind and powers, but hasn't been seen since!

The above team are all awesome characters but I'd rather see a couple of lesser known/MIA characters thrown into the mix!

I actually think the mohawk looks pretty cool

It makes sense. Originally the mohawk represented a shift in her personality....And if you know anything about women, more often then not their hairstyles can be a outward representation of inner emotional turmoil.

Lawl, I am a woman.

Yes, yes, shift in her personality, I understood that part well enough, but it didn't suit her well at all.
