Deadpool - The Video Game Impressions

Now that the game's been out for a bit, find out what we thought, from a comic book perspective.

Deadpool is far from your typical comic book character. Depending on who writes him, he's often portrayed as a wise-cracking (sometimes annoying) mercenary that will kill without a second thought while usually breaking the fourth wall. Makes you wonder who decided to make a video game based on a character like this.

As the game has been out for a while, the reviews have already been released. If we're being honest, some of the reviews haven't quite been in Wade Willson's favor. What it comes down to is who is the game made for and what exactly are they expecting from it.

No Caption Provided

In terms of gameplay, it's not a perfect game. There are some technical glitches you'll discover while playing, some points in the game require you to wander aimlessly searching for key items. There are the occasional platform-jumping portion and of course loads of repetitive fighting against a seemingly endless horde of similar looking villains (which, in some fairness, can be explained by story elements).

This doesn't mean it's a bad game. I actually had fun playing.

No Caption Provided

The game starts off with Deadpool aware he's in a "big budget" video game and has a bounty he's after. When a couple Marauders show up to save his target (Arclight and Vertigo), the story veers in a different direction. Soon you'll see cameos by Mr. Sinister, the X-Men (Wolverine, Psylocke, Rogue and Domino) as well as a trip to Genosha where Deadpool gets some time with Cable.

What you'll be doing is a lot of fighting. The game mechanics isn't too difficult. You can easily figure out the controls and between the two attack buttons (with your swords) and your heavy artillery, you can mix up your attacks and build up fighting combos. Defeating enemies gets you credits which you can use to buy and upgrade your weapons at any time during the game.

No Caption Provided

The best or worst thing in the game is Deadpool. Here, he talks. He talks a lot. If you enjoy his low level of humor, you will find the absurdity entertaining. Where it could be a problem is for the casual Deadpool fan. With elements of the gameplay having a repetitive nature, having to listen to Deadpool's banter, some of which will repeat ("Hey, that's my favorite bullet. Can I get it back?"), completing the game might be difficult but not due to the actual difficulty of the game.

The other thing to note is this is a hard M-rated game. There is plenty of profanity and suggestive comments thrown about during the game (pretty much all by Deadpool, of course). The violence is high as well. He has swords and guns. He slices, dices and shoots his opponents. Deadpool also takes severe damage.

No Caption Provided

This is a game where it makes sense for your character to be able to take abuse and recover quickly. There is no need for health or med-packs. When you start taking too much damage (and the screen starts going red), you simply run away to allow yourself to heal. Using your teleportation also makes avoiding damage a little easier as well.

No Caption Provided

This isn't a sophisticated video game. It's completely juvenile. That's how it's supposed to be. This is the chance to play as the Merc with a Mouth. You get to control a wacky killing machine that can easily recover from injuries. There are plenty of Easter Eggs in the game that will make you laugh.

The main thing is you have to like Deadpool and this sort of humor to really appreciate the game. The game doesn't really bring anything overly unique to the genre but it is fun to play. Those that don't know or like Deadpool will not appreciate the game unless they are open to this type of humor. Being able to be submerged in Deadpool's world is both fun and scary. Whether you rush out to play the game immediately or wait for the price to drop really depends on your level of affection towards Deadpool.

If I had to give this a rating, it'd be a very high 3 out of 5. It really depends on how much you love Deadpool and the idea of playing a video game with him. The game gets repetitive and a tad frustrating at moments, but it's still pretty fun for comic book readers to get to play as Deadpool.

Yeah, it's about Deadpool, cool.

Two problems:

1) The game isn't very funny, especially by Deadpool standards.

2) The gameplay is average. Like, really average. It's mediocre to the point where it becomes something you're forced to do to enjoy the story and dialogue instead of something you look forward to.

This game is a rental at best, and even then only if you're a Deadpool fan.

I enjoy the game quite a bit. It does get repetive and fighting hordes of enemies can be pretty hard and annoying. Deadpool takes a lot of damage from bullets. I get cut down pretty easy if I don't take out shooters first. Still a fun game! I give 3.5 out 5.

Words cannot describe how much I hate this game. Having to listen to Deadpool's inane fratboy jokes every 10 seconds? Pass. If I was 12 years old and thought it was hilarious that he kept giggling about tits and boners, perhaps I'd enjoy this game more. The repetitive, tiresome gameplay is precisely the same problem I had with the Wolverine: Origins game, but at least that one had a marginally better plot and some more challenging foes.

Quite likely one of the worst games I've ever been stupid enough to buy. Juvenile humor can be funny if done right; this wasn't done right.

I'm a huge deadpool fan and I thought this game was awesome, but I also think it could have been better. I really liked the cameos of other characters especially Cable, I think his voice actor was the announcer from Kids WB back in the day haha. The fighting did get repetitive but it's the same thing to the amazing spiderman game or recent Batman games. There are some cheesy lines from deadpool but then there are moments where you will die laughing. If you're a deadpool fan you definitely need to at least rent this, I'd give it a 4/5 for my boy!

I give it a 3.5 out 5.

1.It's Deadpool

2.It's funny because it's Deadpool

3.Nolan North is doing the VO(Which I think it's amazing)

4.It's Deadpool(Oh, did I say that before?oh well, I'll say it again)

so...5.It's Deadpool

A philistine is someone who lacks or dismisses art, culture and aesthetic sense; those are not terms that have ever been applicable to Deadpool.

The things I've seen about and out of this game since it came out (in particular, a screenshot dealing with Arclight) have solidified something for me: if this is a true Deadpool game, if this is what Deadpool is, then I actually don't like him.

There's immature, and then there's banal.

There's off-color, and then there's outright offensive.

And at the end of the day, this game suggests that Deadpool fans want more of the latter and less of the former, and if that's the case then count me out of the fanbase.

People don't admit this, they freak out over the score and get offended it didn't get an 8, 9 or 10.

1)There is a reason it is unanimously getting lower scores, even if you don't normally listen to reviewers, that says something.

2) there is a reason when it first came out it was priced lower than any other new game that hits the shelves. They knew they were making an average game and didn't feel the need to charge you for anything more than what it's worth.

I am sure it is enjoyable for those who know deadpool, but like it has been said before, to get to the spread out cool parts you have to do a lot of sh*t that isn't fun.

Idk how many times I have been downvoted on ign or have been called a troll because I tell it how I see it.

I think most people are rating this based on comparisons to other media.

I had no expectations from the game & I'm not much of a Deadpool fan, but the game is certainly worth a look at for any gamer or comic fan. Enemies can be a little repetitive - IF - you don't bother to use combos or alternate your weapon choices.

Sure there is some immaturity - but - hey - its Deadpool! - & he's not exactly with mainstream thinking now is he? Could it have been funnier - possibly. Deadpool does have a few shining moments that were not entirely juvenile - one of the funniest moments caught me off guard - when his dog showed up on screen and ran off with his arm & Deadpool expresses some genuinely funny commentary. Had the delivery of Deadpool's lines been timed better throughout the game I do think the game could have been quite a bit funnier.

All in all its a good game - there are some interesting twists in how you manipulate the environments and the load out purchases are a nice addition to varying gameplay. Plenty of Comic cameos here - even if they may all be in Deadpool's head!

Good start to another Comic based game that could use some improvement and expansion on ideas already touched on in the game.

Certainly worth a look at - and if your a fan of Action fighting games or Deadpool - worthy of buying.

Not great - but Good

7 out of 10

The few moments of surprises in the game elevate it slightly above mediocrity.

My only real complaint of the game was that the last level was so ridiculously hard I could almost feel an ulcer growing. Nothing but enemy after enemy, and than you have to fight three bosses at the same time, than you have to fight the final boss twice.....ugh...

But it was overall a decent game. The best level was when Deadpool and Death were chilling out with some help from Cable on the side. That level was amazing and was what won me over. If only the rest of the game was like that....I mean, for a Deadpool game there wasn't a lot of his side characters, having Cable and Wolverine is fine, but where was Bob? Or Blind Al? Or Weasel? Or TASKMASTER?!!! Death and Cable being the only characters from Deadpool's friend-list making an appearance was just disappointing.

So yeah, like I said. Not a bad game. I enjoyed it. I laughed once or twice, but the gameplay was only decent and the lack of Deadpool's side characters was kinda sad.

I'd give it a solid 7 out of 10.

...So what? Why would we NOT compare it to other media? If I only have a certain amount of cash to spend on videogames, I'm going to pick the one that provides the most entertainment and/or replayability. Deadpool might be good on its own merits but why would I pick it up when there are far better games to play? If I wanted an action spectacle game I'd get DmC or Metal Gear Rising. You HAVE to compare it to games like that, or whatever game fits its genre, if you don't want to waste money.

Also, I shouldn't have to be forced to alternate weapons for the game to not be repetitive. Plenty of action games let you play with one or two weapons the whole game and it's still fun. Deadpool combat system itself is just poorly made, and it doesn't matter how many different combos you pull off with every single weapon combination. The game is just dry and unimaginative.I understand the draw of the game is that it's about Deadpool but at least put some effort into making the gameplay original and fun.

If you're a fan of action games, Deadpool is definitely NOT worth the buy. There are plenty of better titles out there.

Why would i want to use combos against enemies who can't adapt to my basic attacks? That's why combos exist. The enemies in this game don't give you incentive to switch up your play-style, which is why they get repetitive and it makes the combat feel like a chore.

The few moments of surprises in the game elevate it slightly above mediocrity.

I know this is High Moon's first game, but the stench Activision's "let's flood the market with as many unpolished Marvel games because the fan-base has low standards" policy is all over this game. There won't be any improvements or expansion on ideas because they would of happened by now. The problems this game suffers from are the same problem found in Spider-man 3, X-men Destiny, Marvel Ultimate Alliance. These problems are caused by time, and rushing a game out before it's finished.

7 out of 10 is generous. It's suggests that this game is 2 or more points off from being a game of the year contender like Batman Arkham, or Mass Effect. I say If your a fan of comics demand better, and don't support the unfinished slop that's been put in front of you the past years.

Wow. I bet you're so much more fun in person.

People seem to think so. Granted, most of these people are not 12 years old and rolling in fits of laughter over toilet humor, so they're probably not the target audience for this game.

You honestly need to stop. Because now, you're being judgmental and completely irritating. Your judgment was more annoying than the constant jokes Deadpool said as he shot the enemy.

I'm 19. I'm into mature humor, huge fan of people such as George Carlin, Louis CK, Bill Burr, Richard Pryor.

That being said, I thought this game was a blast. Know why? I can laugh at "immature" humor. I get who it is, and that's why I've always loved Deadpool. It's good to get away from the mature serious humor, that everyone always gets into. Gameplay in games like this are always going to be repetitive. Fact of the matter is, you don't like that issue. Did you not play classic arcade games like the TMNT one, where you just beat up people? Did you not play any hack and slash games? Not every game needs to be diverse. Just look into the trailers. It pretty much TELLS YOU what you're going to be getting into.

The game is fine, and at least it does more than the normal hack and slash/beat em up and they give you the sneak option with some humor. I think it did what it neded to do. Your comparison to the Wolverine:Origins game was so off. Better plot? Could it be because it was based off a movie, that had somewhat of an established plot before hand? This game had a plot, it was off the wall, but it was meant to be.

The game was crazy fun, the combos are pretty entertaining to watch, trying to perform them is even better. You get some cool challenge maps, the weapons are pretty entertaining, the cast that appears along side you gets pretty surprising to see.

If you like to have fun with your video games, and don't expect something revolutionary with every game, pick it up.

I give it a nice... 8/10. It knows what it's doing. It does what it's meant to do.

Granted, it ain't the best game in the world, but it's just the kinda game where you can chill out and enjoy that side of yourself for however long you wanna play it. It's an attitude that permeates the air as soon as you start off in his apartment, so, I say: Mission Accomplished. Successful game. Now there's besides-the-point problems I have with it that stems from the comics that Way has written but they're kinda remedied by Nolan North's voice acting (thank god for him).

I enjoyed the game very much. I am not an avid gamer so if someone wants to say I am wrong, I'm okay with that. I think it's a fun game and everything. However, I am a bit disappointed. I want more story. I want more villains. Tasky isn't in the game. You barely see Domino, Psylocke, or Cable. I wanted T-Ray to be there. I just was like... okay... that was fun, but I WANT MORE.

I wish I could get the alternate skins. Can someone tell me how to get the alternate skins? Can I use them on campaign or no?

@yung_ancient_one: Only thing about the alternate skins is you can't use them in the campaign and you have to beat the gold-tier challenge in each challenge level to get the infinity challenge and it unlocks the specific skin for that challenge.

I agree with Tony's review. I'm a big Deadpool fan and laughed my ass off the entire play through. Gameplay is repetitive but being able to purchase upgrades and such made it ok. Reminded of the old PS2 Punisher game which is one of my all time favs.

G-Man summed it up nice. It really depends on how much you love Deadpool.

I'll stick with The Last Of Us.

I still need to get that!

Then again, I still haven't completed Far Cry 3, Bioshock Infinite or Assassin's Creed 3...

Dude, not cool. Take it down a notch.

Assassin's Creed 3 wasn't all that to me. It was nice for a new layout, but the loooooong tiring ride was for almost everywhere you had to go was annoying (even if you teleported).

Ezio's trilogy was the best.

But, the Deadpool game looks very repetitive and doesn't seem to have an interesting story. BUT, it's Deadpool, so I'd try it.

I really wish developers would actually put the time and care into a game that a great property like this deserves. I didn't play this but it sounds like a rushed cash-grab like that Marvel Heroes game that recently released. God, what a waste of life that was.

It's like these devs are just depending on everyone to overlook all the problems because it has our favorite characters in it. Well, going off some of these comments I think that works for some people. But normal gamers aren't fooled. Mediocrity is mediocrity, no matter what the paint job is.

I enjoyed it. 6/10 (above average). Average graphics, average gameplay, but has solid voice-work and funny jokes if you're a Deadpool fan, with the addition of X-Men cameos. Might make a review sometime if I'm not too lazy.

I liked it, mostly for the humor. The gameplay was average...well the fighting was average and it could have done without so many platforming but it was fun to play. Basically it wasnt the comic messiah but it wasnt the comic anti christ and im sure we've all played worse games than this.

@patrat18: How many good games has DC made? How many good games does DC have that don't include Bats in it?

Humor is subjective- clearly some people like the humor that Deadpool brings to the table, some people don't.

I haven't played it, I'll probably snag it on a Steam sale but the Giant Bomb quick look made it look, in my opinion, both unfunny & a chore to play. I don't have an affinity for Deadpool (the character) but great (or even good) projects don't need to rely on a simple crutch like playing on a user's love of the source material to make up for other areas that need improvement.
