Deadman TV Series in Development

Is this the character that can replace Smallville?

No Caption Provided

Deadman's been getting a lot of attention lately. Not only was he crucial in Brightest Day, he also won the heart of Holly Granger and played an important role in Flashpoint: Deadman and the Flying Graysons. Deadman has been on the small screen in animated form but it looks like he is getting ready to make his live-action debut.

Making his debut in 1967's Strange Adventures #205, Deadman has long been a fan-favorite but not exactly a household name. This is something that Supernatural creator, Eric Kripke is hoping to change.

Deadline reported that the CW is looking to bring a new superhero franchise to the airwaves. With Smallville ending it's successful ten season run, a big hole has been left in their programming schedule. The show will be written and executive produced by Kripke.

CW president Mark Pedowitz said they are looking to do a superhero show next year of the right character comes along. Deadman may seem like an odd choice, the spirit of a murdered man able to inhabit the bodies of others in order to solve their problems, but given the supernatural element (no pun intended) and the success of shows like Supernatural and Vampire Diaries on the CW, Deadman might just be the perfect fit.

We all know adapting superheroes in tights can be a difficult task. Deadman may be the character that can bring some life to the network.

I'll give the series a fair chance, but I don't know it doesn't really FEEL like the show that will follow in smallville's footsteps, maybe if they picked a more recognizable like green arrow or something of that nature I'd be more inclined to think it would be, we'll see

I like it. I also want to see if there would be room for a Hellblazer TV series, or the Vertigo published Madame Xanadu, or a long shot, a show on Shade The Changing Man.

I hope they keep his costume.
Deadman is one of my favorite characters... I hope they don't screw him up like Superman.

I dont think that this is going to happen...

As interesting this is, and as MUCH as I and other comic community nerds want this to happen... I dont think this will fly.

Smallville had the the familiar feel of comic books that the general public understands- its pretty much common knowledge that Clark was adopted, and he grew up in a small town and plus, everyone KNOWS Superman. I would love to see a Deadman series, but I dont see the general prime-time audiences would be able to understand or find any kind of relationship with this awesome super hero. Too many of his outstanding qualities and most well known actions have been in comics- nothing super major in other media that makes him recognizable

At least, I feel that way if Deadman were to be picked up by major media networks. Lets be honest, ABC/WB/FOX has wider, broader, range of an audience vs Syfy who has a specific audience target that would have a higher probability of knowing who Deadman is, and thus appreciating the series.

I think really the next bet for the new super hero series is something that BEEN in other major media , or had some kind of cameo in Smallville.

Sounds pretty cool, I'd definitely watch it.
I predict this show will last for 4 seasons minimum, if it gets made.

These pretty much cover how I feel about this. I'm all for lesser known characters getting some spotlight, but out of ALL DC's lesser known characters I think there were a few better choices to pick than this....

I love Deadman. Boston Brand has always been an awesome character. I wonder how they'd try to pull the show off though... I'm really really hoping Kripke goes the Quantum Leap route. Boston would obviosly be like Sam & Rama could fill the Al role! Oh, to dream...

now, outside of thoes lovely DC cartoons such as "Justice League" and "Batman Brave and the bold" i'm not really to familiar with the character, though I am going to be picking up DC Univerce Presents, come september. I don't see this idea being either bad or good, it all depends on the writing, but i can definatly guess that this show, if produced, will not be as big a hit for the CW as Smallville. People, even non-comic readers, know who Clark Kent/Superman is and therefore sort of knew where the series was going. DSeadman is going to be an anomaly with them. Some people might jump on because its a paranormal series, but others might not, comparing it to other supernatural series..... no pun intended.

Now personally I'd love to see a Booster Gold / Blue beetle series (the current blue beetle) I mean just imagine it. Hero kicking bad guy but acction, Time travel (for booster), and teen drama (for beetle). It's got the scify and drama elements that just spell out viewers..... though this might just be my imagination running wild (I also like the idea of a Bart Allen show. starting him out as he was in the comics, and developing him to the point that he was in his flashpoint mini series).  But these be my thoughts. :P We'll just have to wait and see.

I much prefer a movie of Deadman. I had read that Gullimero del Toro was wanting to do a Deadman movie and have Doug Jones play Deadman. Which is like perfect.

As long as they do not have Kristen Kruek in the show to help drag it down for 7 seasons, and PLEASE do not have the same 5 minute dialog at the end of almost every show about him trying to deal with his powers, his dad or his feelings for Lana or Louis....

@RareCheshire: I liked the series for what they did. Harleen was cool. Huntress's powers I could have done with out; just have her kick ass without making her eyes "transform." Flashback with Bats and Catwoman coulda been shot better. That was probably the cheesiest part and they played it at the beginning of each ep.

I am usually for any television or movie iteration of superheroes but Deadman would be amongs several others at the bottom of my list of who i would like to see a live action comic book series or movie.

I will, of course, watch it in the hopes that it does well and causes the networks to add more superhero shows to their line-ups.

Scott Bakula will be playing him, right?

Thanks for reminding me of Quantum Leap. I miss that show. D: They need to make a television special and give the series a proper freakin' ending.

@RareCheshire: I totally agree. Dina Meyer was the best Babs, if it was to be eventually redone they should keep it more like the comics.

Its not that I wouldn't want a Deadman series, its that I wouldn't want a >>CW<< Deadman series.

so let's see... they'll get rid of the costume and white face... probably replace him with a 20-something pretty boy in skinny jeans... lots of emoting... oooh, I got a great idea.  Boston dies with his brought-to-you-by-Verizon smartphone , so he's never without his undead collection of music on a device that never needs to be recharged.  Great for having an excuse to play Vanessa Carlton or some crappy pop-punk band during emotional moments in the show.  Greenlight that s**t now... it can't be as bad as Aquaman.

That's be dope! I think Wes Bentley would be perfect for the role. In fact I just did a blog where you can also see who I think would be an ideal Dove in a hypothetical Brightest Day movie=]

An intangible hero who leaps from body to body solving problems worked pretty well for Quantum Leap once upon a time. I could see it working if done right.
