DC's 'The New 52' - What About Power Girl?

After establishing her character over the course of the last 27 issues, Power Girl's future in the new DCU still seems unclear.

If this DC reboot, revamp, new DC Universe -- whatever you want to call it -- has done anything, its that it has brought DC Comics to the forefront of comic book news. And that, for the most part, is a really good thing. I mean, all comic fans want to see people buying and reading comic books -- we all want this industry to exist, right? Yet, while it's all great and fun that the new DC Universe is being remodeled and characters we know and love are getting a chance to break from the chains of continuity that confine them (and their respective creative teams), not all of the news that has come to light has been great.

Some change isn't always the best -- at least it isn't when you are dealing with some of your favorite comic book characters. In order to pull off a revamp and a launch of 52 new ongoing titles, DC Comics had to cancel a whole lot of comic book series and change the roster to many of their popular teams. Among the canceled books was Power Girl, which had reached issue 27 before coming to an end prior to the launch of the new DC Universe. The series, which had initially seen success in numbers and praise from fans and comic journalists alike, was launched by stellar creative team Jimmy Palmiotti, Justin Gray and artist Amanda Conner.

The series' first issue saw a lot of success before the second issue dropped to 36,000 units sold and remained there before eventually dipping below the 20,000 units sold mark. That's not to say the series was bad; in fact, it was pretty good. Even after Palmiotti, Gray and Conner's twelve issue run ended and writer Judd Winick took over writing duties on the series alongside artist Sami Basri until Matthew Sturges came on board, the series was still okay. Sadly, money talks and PG wasn't selling the way DC would have liked -- and fans had been bracing themselves for a canceled book. Which unfortunately, is exactly what happened.

This summer, DC revealed an all new line-up of books that would be released starting in September, and Power Girl unfortunately did not make the list. PG not only lost her own ongoing series in the revamp, but she lost a place on any of DC's upcoming team books (Justice League and Justice League International, for example). This was, unfortunately, a rather sad ending to a series which had done its best to give Power Girl something she had never had before -- an identity.

Before the Power Girl series by Palmiotti and Gray, Power Girl was nothing more than an Earth-2 version of Supergirl. She was (arguably) a second rate character whose physical appearance was used to sell her books when her personality seemed lacking. The creative team made her entertaining and interesting; they gave her a personality, interests and ambition. Their treatment of the fact that she is a voluptuous woman was appropriately tongue-in-cheek, and made for some very amusing moments in her book. In twelve issues Power Girl went from being a character who was just a really busty female version of Superman, to being her own woman with her own identity who just happened to have a voluptuous figure. That's what made this book so great, and that's what makes me sad to see it go.

Late last week during FanExpo in Toronto (which we covered here), DC announced an all new series, Justice Society, which was being written by veteran Starman and Justice League writer James Robinson and drawn by Nicola Scott (Wonder Woman). The announcement revealed that the series (which doesn't yet have a release date) would be set on Earth-2 -- coincidentally, Power Girl's home universe. Could DC be saving PG for the Justice Society book? Could Power Girl finally be returning to Earth-2? All that we know for sure is that DC editor Eddie Berganza had been quoted as saying Karen Starr would return -- but he never confirmed that she would be returning as Power Girl.

After a great series that had established Power Girl as having more depth and personality, it would certainly be unfortunate to see the character's departure from comics. Particularly since her final issue made no mention or hint of what was in store for her in the future. It just sort of ended, and frankly, that kind of sucks.

What do you think of Power Girl? What would you like to see be her future at DC comics? Do you think she will join the recently announced Justice Society book?

Well least she got "Karen Starr will be making an appearance blah blah", there are more interesting characters im concerned about like the Shazam family, Cassandra Cain, etc.
Cassandra Cain is still in the DCU as Blackbat.  I'm hoping Shazam will be in Earth 2. It's a better fit in my opinion.
Blackbat? Bleh.
Yes I know. I don't like the name either but she was already named that preflashpoint

Finally the question I've been thinking about This New 52 stuff. WHAT ABOUT CHARACTERS WE'LL MISS??  Power Girl_ will she come back with a symbol on her chest? Or have a smaller chest OR just an even lower cut design?  Hell Supergirl looks older in 52 sooo.  Will Daimon be born again or Never?  What about Cassandra Cain? well she be born again?   I say born again because they are younger...Darksied is Alive not DEAD. Hal is young and the Green Lantern...that means he never went crazy and Kyle never gets a green to replace him, What about John?  Crisis of Multiple Earths I guess didn't happen, That might be how the universe goes back to normal?  Is Wonder Woman Diana's Mother the Queen or is this Diana? and is Diana made of clay or was she born?  Hey they made Thomas Wayne Batman...who knows. Yeah I want to read about Batman, Cyborg and Wonder Woman.  So many people gone or could be gone or could be NEW VILLAINS. I'm also looking to see what cool New characters will come of 52. You know when it all goes away, that'll be the character you pray crosses over.  SUPERBOY PRIME? and so on?
Damion has already been confirmed as Robin. Cassandra Cain is still Blackbat. Hal's history as Green Lantern is still intact. So Kyle is still a Green Lantern. So is John Stewart. Thomas Wayne was only Batman during Flashpoint and Diana is going to be Wonder Woman it has already been confirmed.

Yes Power Girl needs to be a part of the Earth-2 Universe with the upcoming Justice Society book. It just will not be the same without her.  My run on the Power Girl book lasted for only the first six issues and while the arc was a rather silly tone I did enjoy the book and would have wanted others but hey, sometimes life just throws you a curve you know?  At any rate she just has to make a return and not be swept under the dustbin like so many characters apparently are.  Come back Karen Starr...and bring your twins with you :) I'll be waiting!

What about Stephanie Brown? Will she become Spoiler again and join Teen Titans? I guess as the 52 are whittled down over the months, which is what my local retailer has suggested will happen, then new titles may spring up to replace them with new/old characters put into the new DCU.

@Babs: Nice article Babs, bringing some Power Girl love to ComicVine ^_^

The PG series had it's ups and down's but overall it exceeded my expectations. Winick had a few great issues but not as many as the original team. Issue #10 was probably the best of the bunch.

What would I like PG's future to be in the DCnU?
Well my gut says "nothing drastic", the closer she is to her original self the better, boob window and all.  But there are a few things to consider.

1) A Different Kind of Kryptonian : Is it necessary for her to be "another" version of Supergirl? Does she have to have the exact same powers as the Superman? Its something to think about.

One of the things I've grown to love about PG is that she feels different from the average  Kryptonians (or should I say, the other 3). Maybe DC can push this a little further. I'm not entirely sold on this idea though but maybe it's worth trying.

2) Costume: I loved Amanda Conner's version of PG's costume. Too bad most of the other DC artists butchered it. As long as the new costume has the familiar elements of her old one, I'm down. As long as they don't give her the Starfire treatment.

She really grew on me through her appearances during Generation Lost. I hear good things about the series and I may have to check it out in trade. I hope she does appear as Power Girl in the Justice Society book. Though I'm still mighty apprehensive about Robinson writing it...cry for justice...

I preferred the JSA set up as WW2's veterans, the old mystery men like they originally were rather than living "on an alternate earth" as the Silver Age changed it along the way...

This new Supergirl looks like a combination of Kara-El and Kara-L. I mean just look at that onesies. Plus her complextion is more Kara-L than El.

I'm already planning on getting JSA and anything else set on Earth-2. I hope PG makes a welcome return, big boobs and all to that universe. With the cancellation of her solo book, not to mention Zatanna, Stephanie Brown and Mayday Spider-Girl over at Marvel, it's slim pickings for good, female heroes these days.

The series would've survived a little longer in my opinion if Amanda Conner didn't leave halfway. Power Girl and Amanda's artistic style was meant to be. Don't get me wrong. I enjoyed reading Power Girl after issue # 12 but it wasn't the same without Amanda's creative input.

Maybe her identity will be split, she'll be Karen Starr in the DCnu and Power Girl on earth-2.  If that happens I hope she doesn't go back to being all depressed like she was during the JSA.

Power Girl is one of the best, the people need PG. I don't find Supergirl very interesting, Power Girl on the other hand is one of the more entertaining glorious characters.
Power Girl was originally created for two purposes.  The first was to give some youth to the JSA.  The second was in fact because DC itself found Supergirl at the time not to be very interesting, and they wanted a more interesting version of her.

I doubt we've seen the last of Power Girl. She's obviously still in the hearts and minds of the readers, and she's a cosplay favorite at conventions. This reboot might even be good for her. As someone mentioned earlier, she's spent most of the modern age as a continuity embarrassment. We had the retconning of her origin that made her Arion's descendant; she had that kid during Zero Hour that disappeared and no one talks about; she disappeared for a little while; and then she went back to being the Earth-2 Supergirl. I'll admit that I didn't read the Gray/Palmiotti/Conner series, but it sounds like it was getting canceled regardless of the revamp. There's nothing that prevents her from returning to the person she was by the end of that series when she comes back in Mister Terrific or as a member of Earth-2's Justice Society (we have the multiverse again, so we might as well use it). All in all, I wouldn't worry too much about Power Girl. She'll be back.
There's actually no evidence that it would have been canceled.  It was AFAIK, the only DCU comic to have about five months of mostly continuous upticks in sales, albeit small ones.  And it was well above cancellation levels.  Levels that say Jonah hex for example was operating under, and Blue Beetle operated under when it was around---long before it was canceled.  And Supergirl was on it's way to pass Power Girl as a lower selling title.  In another few months, if the trends had continued, it would have done so.

So Power Girl's cancellation seems mainly based on the reboot.  It's rather impressive that Power Girl maintained the levels it did with creative teams that weren't A-list, no promotion from DC, and no real crossovers like sister title Supergirl continuously got.

This.  I'm adult enough to admit that I first tried Power Girl out because of the boobs.  But I stuck with it because it was entertaining.  I like the idea of a hero who has fun.  Who's life isn't an endless slog.  Who doesn't spend every second reliving past trauma or trying to keep their loved ones safe is refreshing.  She's like a Spider Man who didn't kill his uncle and is well endowed.  Plus DC mostly spared the series from crossovers.  At least in the first year.  I personally hate it when my stories are held hostage in another book.  It was so nice to just have to buy one book to get the story.

I love Powergirl. I think she's a victim of the new DC Universe which is so adament at trying to make all their characters look more proportional, they will not allow a large breasted woman to exist anymore. So, she was cut. Also, if you look, no Justice Society, it's hard to come from Earth-2 if there isn't one. However, I've heard they're introducing Earth-2 sometime soon so hey, maybe we'll get Powergirl and Star Spangled Kid and all the others. Let us hope anyway. Though, she may have a few reductions...

Personally, I didn't care for the comic itself. Despite that, I think the point of it (giving Karen an 'identity') is a worthy enough cause to make my distaste for the title itself irrelevant.

At San Deigo Comic Con my gf and I talked to Dan Didio. We mentioned Supergirl and how her outfit seemed very Powergirl/Supergirl mashup. Was that because there was not going to be a Powergirl in the the new52? He said what do you mean mash up? They are two seperate people. So I replied, So will she be in the DCnU? he said  "I didnt say that,  but wait and see."

If you could see his expression I would say its a big hint that Powergirl will appear. Its already known that the new52 is pretty much just the first wave.

idk why they cancelled pg her book was a breath of fresh air i think in my opion of why it was cancelled is cause Winick tried to conect pg with his other book. i noticed when he came on Terra vanished so did the little red head kid to. i was surprised it lasted to 27 issues without Amanda Jimmy and Justin. dose anyone know if PG and Kara ever patched things up i noticed they never explored that in the pg book that ik of. i hope pg gets a new title in the near furture.

As much as I love Power Girl. She shouldn't have existed in the first place. No reason for two characters (Supergirl & Power Girl) who are essentially the same character to exist in the same universe. It's just stupid IMO.

I started reading comics around age 10 in 78 and one of my first comic books off a spinner rack was the return of All Star Comics with continuous numbering from the previous pre-silver age series.  Well, that is where I first discovered Power Girl and Huntress (Helena Wayne, Batman's daughter Earth-2).  I've been stuck on both characters ever since and PG's most recent series I thought was a long overdue focus on the character.

Here is the problem I have with all the books. None of them gave anyone any kind of send off that these Charcters deserved....especially the Golden Agers. To see an empty coffin for Alan Scott, a nonsense ending for PG, it's just typical. I am not happy about these changes. I am hoping they deliver more than what they did in JLA #1.

After the announcement that DC is launching the Justice Society in an Earth 2 setting, I think that it would be best that Power Girl be established in that environment. It was always so odd that she and Supergirl shared the same reality. DC has the opportunity to treat Earth 2 as Marvel treats it's Ultimate Universe where they can have parallel and and original characters live and die as the creative teams see fit and have the DCnU proper concentrate on the core characters without convoluting the universe with nonsensical relationships like how does the Alan Scott Green Lantern relate to the Green Lantern Corps or tying the Jay Garrick Flash in with the Barry Allan Flash.
Power Girl should be the Earth 2 Supergirl, a place where she can thrive!

When I read the newer PG series, I really enjoyed it. Plus it felt like a great balance between comedy, drama, and an action flick.
And some lovely artwork that made the series shine even more. Bummer not to see this series continue. Which it should, because PG is an awesome character!

I Really don't want to lose Power Girl! I've written letters to DC Comics, had friends write in asking that if one of the New 52! I've even joined twitter, just to get on a twitterpetion to save Power Girl! Please, Everone sign! If You haven't already, I've got no answer from Anyone at DC. I called up DC and finally got a superviser to call Me back! She listened, and promise to email Her Boss about Power Girl! But I haven't heard anything.. Power Girl is just to important, to just let Them make Her dissapear! Please, We have to everything We can to let DC Comics know that! Maybe, if We make enough noise Someone will listen! I really Hope We can save Power Girl!
