DC Reveals Details on the 52 JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA #1 Variant Covers

Artist David Finch's variant covers for the upcoming JUSTICE LEAGUE title is revealed.

The first issue of JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA #1 will be a bit different from the titles that are usually released from DC. To celebrate the U.S. as well as all 52 DC titles, DC will release 52 different variant covers for the first issue, each cover will feature '52 U.s. flag variant editions,' one for each of the 50 states in the union as well as one for Washington, D.C. and one for Puerto Rico. The image will feature members of the league including Catwoman, Green Arrow, Baz (the new Green Lantern) and Vibe.

The image is inspired by the classic photograph taken by Joe Rosenthal for the Associated Press back in February 23, 1945 during World War II in which a group os U.S Marines hoisted the flag on Mount Suribachi. The historical photograph is titled 'Raising The Flag On Iwo Jima' and is a classic picture, so it makes sense that the artist David Finch would use the image as inspiration for the cover to the first issue of JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA #1, due to his comic shop shelves on February 6th, 2013.

According to DC, there is "no minimum purchase needed to order the variants," and a shrinkwrapped pack of JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA #1 along with all 52 covers will be made available for purchase. Below are three of the 52 total covers, one sporting an American flag and the other two featuring the state flags for California and New York to give you an idea of what they will look like. What do you think of this idea?

So thats the only difference? Kind of weak

They will have to actually draw a new flag shape for my state!

NEW YORK STOLE STAN'S WORD!!!!! And, I never thought I'd see Catwoman behaving so patriotically.

Well they would have the canadian flag for the justice league of canada, but only one guy showed up for the tryouts.

Posted by KnightRise

Hahaha I thought by 52 variant covers there literally would be 52 unique state-themed varants. Oh well, I'll be getting New York.

Posted by Spideycap

The flag is drawn a little janky, but I cant say I wouldnt want the Texas flag one.

Posted by haydenclaireheroes

I want to get some variants

Posted by Outside_85

Looks like they just molded the flags onto those, which to me makes it look like they aren't even part of the original picture.

Posted by kennybaese

I'll probably get one for Montana just because. I guess I had been hoping for something a little more unique for each of the variants, but 52 different covers for each book would be a ridiculous amount of work.

Posted by DarthLydia

there's one important thing about this.... I SEE STAR GIRL IN THE BACKGROUND!! sorry, I don't know if she's shown up anywhere else yet but this is the first time I've seen her since relaunch.

Posted by JamDamage

wow what a bullshit gimic for DC to get a HUGE number of sales. Some poor sap is going to buy all 52 covers too. $159 for 1 book.

S'what I'm talkin' 'bout.

Go JLA!!!

Posted by JayMar89

Still dont unsure about the roster but ill just be getting the regular cover

Whoa, both Vibe and Catwoman look a little too comfortable on this cover. I know they're trying to be patriotic but doesn't this kind of divide us as a nation? It's like how we have sports teams so that states can battle it out for supremacy without actually murdering each other. We should be united, now more than ever. The politicians can't protect us forever. This kind of looks like a sales tactic since hardcore collectors are obviously going to want all the variations. Weird that Puerto Rico gets a spot but not Guam. Then again our flag is kind of lame. I'll stick with the good ol' stars and stripes, maybe Puerto Rico.

WOAH WOAH WOAH WOAH! did anyone else notice Star Girl has a scythe now?

Now an Assassin's Creed Flag!

My first thought. It's even kind of a bad photoshop job.

This maybe a dumb question, but.... . .. . ..

Why is it called the Justice League of America? Is there a Justice League of India? Africa? Japan? Shouldn't it just be called The Justice League.

Because the regular Justice league already exists

Justice League #1

I wonder what one they will be sending to the UK

Posted by Mezmero

@Gotham's Dark Knight: I see it as the Justice League are suppose to stop threats on a global scale. I'm assuming Steve Trevor is assembling the JLA for the sole purpose of taking down the actual Justice League should they pose a threat to the American government. Also they can safeguard the U.S. if the regular JL are indisposed or out of commission.

That sucks. I support the book but those variants aren't exciting or unique at all.

Why is Stargirl holding a scythe instead of the cosmic rod?

Because the Justice League International failed, meaning this is subtly a hoot for American superiority.

This is a bit old by now (this is the regular cover of #1 btw):

its just the new design. the old rod looked a bit like a scythe as well.

the only thing i notice is MM standing like a boss in the back...cant wait for this series to get started!!

..i think it is because they work for the american government!!and there is already a justice league!

Posted by CircularLogic

Wait. Baz is Lebanese and recently deported to Gitmo without due process. Hawkman and MM are aliens. Katana is Japanese, and Catwoman is apparently russian or something (screw that origin).

so...

'MURICA!

Posted by cbishop

I get the idea of sticking with the "52" theme and all, but the U.S. has at least one other territory. If you're going to do something like this, go all out.

Because since the relationship between the Justice League and the US Government failed, the US government made their own JL team, hence Justice League of America. The JLI is sponsored by the UN, hence the International part.

I think that even though it's an over-the-top cash grab, it's a good one. I'm sure I'll grab a few myself, just not from tfaw.

Lame.

Posted by MadeinBangladesh

my comic shop doesnt sell much variants ;(

Posted by NuclearLife

That's a huge let down. I thought they had a totally different cover for each state. Just when I thought they were being creative they do this.

Those Variant collectors are DYING right now...

@Jonny_Anonymous: Replace Downey Jr. with Cumberbatch, and I would buy this comic!

Robert Downey Jr. is already in Avengers, he shouldn't be in Justice League.

Posted by LifePool

@CircularLogic: They're immigrants, just like the rest of us. (unless you're a Native American)

Posted by Miss_Garrick

Stargirl's cosmic rod shouldn't look too much like a scythe. She's not the grim reaper!

True, Cumberbatch also plays a better Holmes

They claim is land in the name of Stan Lee.. Excelsior!

I still think having 2 JL teams.... kinda overdoing it. Why not make it '' JSA'' or something instead of another JL team ? ....

Posted by mightypug78

hopefully those pesky green arrow ads on the front page will be gone by then. they really take away from the art on the front page. it must drive the artists down at DC comics nuts.
