DC Plans 9 Films Leading Up to 2020

While the titles are not revealed, DC has set opening dates for their upcoming films

No Caption Provided

According to Variety, Warner Bros. announced dates for 9 upcoming films based on DC Entertainment comic characters and properties from 2016-2020.. Marvel Studios recently did the same thing for five films up until 2019. In addition, Warner Bros has pushed back the release date of Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice to March 25th, 2016 from May. Originally, the film was going to go head-to-head Captain America 3.

This six year plan is really about getting as many of DC's iconic characters onto the big screen, while working with Diane Nelson, who worked on the "Harry Potter" franchise. There are currently plans for a Man of Steel sequel, a Justice League film, and a solo Wonder Woman film. In addition, a film based on the Vertigo series SANDMAN, by Neil Gaiman is also in the works.

The kick off to this large wave of DC based films starts March 25th with Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice. Here are the upcoming release dates for the unnamed DC movies:

Aug. 5, 2016: Untitled DC Film

June 23, 2017: Untitled DC Film

Nov. 17, 2017: Untitled DC Film

March 23, 2018: Untitled DC Film

July 27, 2018: Untitled DC Film

April 5, 2019: Untitled DC Film

June 14, 2019: Untitled DC Film

April 3, 2020: Untitled DC Film

June 19, 2020: Untitled DC Film

More info on these films as it develops.

I agree this is a different time, people search internet for information more than they used to back then. And that would be a good way of showing that Marvel and DC aren't the same, DC already said that their TV and Movie universe are not interconnected and I doubt they will leave out Flash in JL movie.

What I find very annoying that there are fanboys/fangirls who want WB/DC to fail which is strange since WB/DC gave us the first superhero movies, the one that changed the movie industry as a whole (The Dark Knight forced The Academy to change its rules for the next year.) I've seen bunch of comments like "Oh WB/DC can't do that..." "Or they'll never be Marvel." Well guess what DC/WB are not Marvel, they've been making superhero movies since 1978 and yes they have hits and misses but everybody does. And of course they shouldn't have the same look as Marvel in the first place (they did once in 1978/1989 and again in 2011 which didn't work.) And pretty sure that people didn't like Man of Steel because it did a lot of things that a Marvel movie wouldn't attempt to (Marvel seems to kills its bad guys and never has any empathy for them or jokes afterwards or seems embarrassed that they had a alien invasion.)

I look forward to see what DC/WB does next because unlike Marvel or the other studios, it isn't predictable as we might think.

Thank you. They forgot where they came from. Dc paved the way for Marvel, with comic books and movies.

Technically pulp heroes paved the way for everyone, but hey ;)

I think they were talking about movies.

@lyrafay: who cares what 'the academy' thinks? all oscars are bought and paid for every year. leonardo dicaprio hasnt won an oscar, andy serkis the same. but shitty clooney wins one every year. f**k the oscars. and spider-man and blade brought superhero movies back after nipple man killed them.

Batnipples killed it? Marvel didn't even have any good movies before B&R, the only franchise it could've killed was Batman's own and it failed at that.

@husk: I didn't realize Comic Vine had so many box office analysts. Maybe they should be consulting you with all their plans. I mean, it's not like Warner Brothers is a billion dollar company. I'm sure they would like to know that the film they are producing with the most popular comic character is going to bomb because it's now coming out in March.

May I ask, what production studio you work for?

really? seriously? this kind of information can be gleaned from the local paper in the film and entertainment section, they go over the common knowledge of which months have higher and lower average earning potential, heck you can find a huge article about 'dump months' (as the worst months are typically called) on Wikipedia, as I stated the article lists Jan-Feb, and Aug-Oct. (I limited to Sept-Oct based on recent data that has the top ten earners in August as higher than certain other months.)

never said March was a dump month, simply that it was one of the worst. never said Bat/Supes was going to Bomb (certainly far from it) just that it will be destroyed now, in box office reciepts by Cap3.

March is much better than a lot of months

(Jan, Feb, April, August, Sept, Oct)

But it fails to contend with May, June, July, Nov, Dec so far there has only been ten movies in March that did well enough to be Box- Office Hits only two of those breaking 100mil (The Hunger Games, Alice and Wonderland) every thing else did below 80mill most of them barely make 50mil, May however (the month its leaving) has over 13 that went over 100mill, and over 30 box office hits

this is basic information thats availible to a child with just a click of the button (internet) or by opening a newspaper

so sure, Bat/Supes will do well, just no where NEAR as well Cap3 by mere fact of being in different months. (at least they didn't do like Marvel and put Cap2 in April (which only had one movie over 80 mill at the time.)

There's no way Cap 3 is going to make more money than BvS. Months don't matter when two of the most recognizable characters are in the same movie.

@husk: what other comicbook movies have been released in March. if this is the first one then maybe march is bad financial month in the box office because no star powered movies are usually released at that time.

Its not a dump month by no means there are 6 months worst than March, it could do well, just not 'as' well is what I am saying

ohh, 300 was in March did 70mill...Watchmen did 55 mill (10th best) 300 Rise did 45 mil in March (this is 14th best movie release in March) V for Vendetta did 25 mill in March Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles did 25 mill TMNT 20 mill, and to add some non-comic greats Horton Hears a Who 44 Mill, How to Train your Dragon 43 Millthe best March has ever done is The Hunger Games and Alice and Wonderland did really well,

so it could do amazing. but the odds and statistics are against it for March (though to be fair they may have moved it so not to crowd the August DC release (another bad idea statistically))

@husk o okay i get what your saying. can't disagree with statistics. I knew The beginning of the year was always a bad time financially for movies. Another drawback from the date is that most comic book fans will be in school. Not saying they couldn't go watch it during the weekend , but during the summer they could go any day of the week. But hopefully BvsS proves statistics wrong. I mean they do have two of the most popular superheroes. As long as the marketing is good they should do well.

Well lets remember. Man of Steel was done "just in case" DC lost the lawsuit. It was never supposed to be the start of a DC Cinematic Universe, but since Marvel was spanking them hard at the movies and the lawsuit worked in WB/DC favor they decided to attach it at start there DCCU by sneaking in DC Easter Eggs. Then word came out the the next movie would be the aftermath of MOS, but since they keep wanting to add more and more characters they pushed it back. Now they fear the Capt. America 3 release date so they back it up again. The somebody let slip the first 7 movies.

Then today they release some bogus report and release dates without titles. Well since they pushed back on there second movie I am not holding my breath on the other release dates.

I don't disagree with the statistics but some movies don't follow these statistics, BvS is one of those movies. Batman and Superman are the two most popular character that exist in the same universe and they are teaming up for the first time in live action. Release dates aren't the only factor for box office gross. And challenge accepted.

I also note that it might also vary depending on when the Majority of Students (college and Otherwise) end up having spring break. if the percentages of Spring Break happen to fall on the same weekend, I may be doomed to lose. (I don't have that info in front of me, nor do I know how to get it.)

BUt again, I expect they will both do very well. I extend the bet to you as well Knightfall. .

Another thing about the release date is that there's isn't any major movie releasing between BvS and Cap 3, so BvS won't face any strong competition for more than a month, while Cap 3 has to face Alice sequel and X-Men so it will probably drop quicker than BvS.

I feel this way too, it's one thing for people to not agree with the way WB/DC makes their movies that's fine. It's another thing when people clearly enjoy the idea of DC's movies failing. I've seen it with people mocking WB/DC over it moving BvS away from Cap 3. People are bragging that Cap has "won" and that WB/DC are scared of Marvel. Not to mention the ever annoying taunts of "Marvel has made a movie with a talking tree and raccoon before DC has made a Wonder Woman movie!" Yeah Marvel has also made a movie with a talking tree and raccoon before they've made a solo film for a woman or non white guy.

I remember when The Dark Knight came out and a lot of DC/Batman fans were bragging about it and generally being obnoxious about it's success. Marvel fans are reaching that level of obnoxious imo. No offense to Cap but in his 2nd week he barely managed to beat out Rio 2 at the box office ($40M to $39M I think) and it's not even doing that much better than a Spider-Man movie that got mediocre to bad reviews. So I don't see why WB/DC with the 1st ever onscreen meeting of Batman Superman and Wonder Woman would have to be scared of it.

ahh, so you think opening weekend will not be the only factor, but the extension of its theatre run...

WB/DC also didn't really have many options, the May date is perfect because its the first weekend out of school , the week previous to the Cap3 release is the weekend of exams, and any week after Cap3 can be swallowed up by the overwhelming response of any movie that becomes a blockbuster. Cap 3 had the best date there is (except when it was Cap3 AND BvS on that date) the whole of April is also bad, its almost a dump month.

I am not sure which date would be better if they had to move...probably mid June I'd guess.. but it also doesn't help that Marvel has been Spawn nesting that first week of May every year for several years now

OW isn't always the only factor, and MoS had a bigger opening than Cap 2 anyways, with Batman in it and WW's first big screen appearance its going to be pretty front loaded, and it has more chances of holding better than Cap 3. And April isn't that bad, Cap 2 was released in April and its the highest grossing movie of the year so far in US.

WB/DC has lost my faith, I'll stick to reading their awesome comics, and near perfect animated series/movies
Not the least bit excited for any of there future releases.

But their Cinematic theatrical releases, I gave up on them. they struck gold with 2/3 of Nolan's movies, but those aren't even cannon.

I will see Dawn Of Justice with the lowest of expectations just so i can enjoy it in the least bit possible without being disappointed.

Marvel Studios is where it's at when it comes to the theatrical movie experience for comic book fillms, and i'm a full on DC guy saying that!

P.S Also can we get more Image comics movies out there?? also a Spawn Movie done right could be the kickstarter for it.

Wow Haven't looked at the numbers for this year yet, Cap2 is still the BEST of the year? wow, that is pretty intense. this must be a lousy year for movies, or theres too much summer competition out there. 95 mill is the best April has ever had, before Cap2 it was 80 mill, then the numbers drop like an anvil I think its saving grace was (its awesome) the fact it opened the weekend before Easter (aka the start of Spring Break....for some) which is a position BvS will be in as well. If its a matter of too much competition, Bvs might then have this in the bag. the prime real estate Cap3 is enjoying is definitely in its favor (provided the competition doesn't bite back). MOS also had good position (mid June) not as good as first of May, but Mid June is traditionally an excellent spot.

the more we look at this the more intense the bet seems...there are so many variables and each camp has oodles of point in their favor.

MoS was the first movie, sequels tend to make more money and this one has Batman and Wonder Woman, I still think its going to make more money than Cap 3, if it was Cap/Iron Man team up movie then there might'v been a possibility.

finally some validity to that report that came out a while ago, now we just need names. im guessing august 2016 would be the justice league film which would explain why they pushed the date forward from 2015 to 2016 for the superman wonder woman movie (you call it what you want they are the reasons i will be watching that film :) )

My predictions:

Aug. 5, 2016: Justice League film

June 23, 2017: Wonder Woman solo film

Nov. 17, 2017: The Flash solo film

March 23, 2018: Sandman film

July 27, 2018: Justice League film sequel

April 5, 2019: Superman solo film (follow-up to MOS and BvS)

June 14, 2019: Batman solo film

April 3, 2020: Justice League Dark film

June 19, 2020: Justice League third film

--

This is assuming that WB takes things slow (for the most part) and tries to build the big-name franchises before moving to smaller-name characters

@captainmarvel4ever:

Please for the love of god NO CAPTAIN MARVEL MOVIE! It would be a complete train wreck with so many things that could go wrong. Make a Captain Atom movie, a Hawkman movie, or a Cyborg movie. Any of those would be awesome.

Done with respect, a Captain Marvel movie would be an amazing segue into a Hawkman movie (since he was Pharaoh when Black Adam was still the heroic "Mighty Adam"), a Dr. Fate movie (since Nabu took on mortal form during the reign of Pharaoh Khufu/Hawkman and was called "Nabu the Wise" back then), and a well overdue JSA movie (which will hopefully be a mix of "Avengers" and "Saving Private Ryan"). You know you'd love it Cap, don't kid me!:)

That said, as much as I love Cyborg, I'd really like Steel to get what the Hulk and/or Captain America got: A box-office do-over. Seriously, Shaquille O' Neil did nearly irreparable damage to the character's image in the pop culture at large, so a reboot for him is all but a foregone conclusion in my book. BEFORE Cyborg gets his own film. Especially since Professor Hamilton is lost in the Phantom Zone at the moment. Superman needs his technical advisor, and continuity-wise, Dr. Irons is the man for the job, dammit!;P

I'm honestly surprised to see all these positive reactions.

I'll hand it to DC, Nolan's Batman trilogy was very good, but aside from that, the rest of the DC movies from recent years have sucked.

Superman Returns sucked.

Jonah Hex sucked.

Constantine sucked.

Green Lantern REALLY sucked.

And Man of Steel, while it wasn't a terrible movie, wasn't great either.

Maybe I'm wrong and Batman vs Superman will be great, but I won't be surprised if it sucks...

I wouldn't say that I'm thrilled by this news, but I will say that I'm cautiously optimistic that WB/DC can pull this off. I would definitely go watch a Wonder Woman solo film, Justice League Dark and Suicide Squad team-up films. Hopefully WB/DC haven't bitten off more than they can chew, so to speak.

Checking The Predictions Against WB/DC’s Movie Schedule

Posted on August 6, 2014 by Dan Wickline

No Caption Provided

A while back Nikki Finke announced she knew the upcoming Warner Brothers schedule for DCmovies… with today’s announcement of 10 new movie dates (9 unnamed), it seemed like a good time to compare her list to these.

Nikki Finke: Batman v Superman (May 2016),Shazam (July 2016), Sandman (X-mas 2016),Justice League (May 2017), Wonder Woman(2017), Flash & Green Lantern (X-mas 2017) andMan Of Steel 2 (May 2018).

WB Anouncement: Batman v Superman 3/25/2016 and Untitled movies: 08/05/2016, 06/23/2017, 11/17/2017, 03/23/2018, 07/27/2018, 04/05/2019, 06/14/2019, 04/03/2020 and 06/19/2020

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice – She had it in May of 2016 and the announcement has it in March 25, 2016. To be fair the odds are they moved the movie because of Captain America 3.

Now the most glaring problem here is she has two movies slated for Christmas releases in 2016 (Sandman) and 2017 (Flash & Green Lantern). The only other date in 2016 is August 5th… so no Christmas there. In 2017 there is a November 17th date which is kind of Christmas season.

She had Shazam set at July of 2016 so that could be the August 5th mentioned above. That would make the May 2017 Justice League movie at the June 23, 2017 date. But that leaves her Wonder Woman film date without a match. And her May 2018 Man of Steel 2 date could be the March or July dates…

I believe Finke’s information came out prior to Marvel Studios announcing their batch of film dates and that could have made Warner Bros change their dates. But she has 3 movies a year for 2016 and 2017 and there are only 2 dates per year each year according to the studio. Too many problems here for me to have any faith in her information for now.

Finke is sticking by her information though and mentions Metal Men and Suicide Squad as well.

@ripcurl: They always give WB/DC free pass "everything is awesome", no wonder we have to wait until 2016 so see the B v S.

Watch them all be Batman films with other DC characters as cameos.

Batman: Rise of the Justice League

Batman 2: When Amazonians Attack.

Batman The Third: The Return of Batman (And also some kinda strong dudes from SANDMAN) But MORE IMPORTANTLY BATMAN

Batman 4: The Flash

I hope these movies are a Green Lantern reboot with Kyle Rayner or John Stewart as the main character, Guillermo Del Toro's Justice League Dark movie, and adaptations of Aquaman, The Sandman series, Hawkman, and Wonder Woman.

while I actually prefer DC over Marvel , DC has done nothing to warrant this kind of confidant view. I disliked the Nolan movies, also them & MOS just tonally do not feel like superhero movies like Marvel does. Now I'm not saying to copy Marvel, but I do not like what DC has put out. & then I hear, because I'm not going to watch it, that the GL movie was bad. Other than tv, DC needs to prove they can make decent movies.

In other news, DC pushes back Batman vs Superman : Dawn of Justice to avoid competition from Captain America 3. When asked what he thought when it came to winning the battle of the release date. Steve Rogers only had this to say....

Exactly, so long as suits at WB are running these films, they will continue to suck.

@captainmarvel4ever: I love both Marvel and Dc. If I would have to choose which characters I like more it would definitely be DC but Marvel is easily my second favorite company and their movies are superb. Even though DC is rushing their films and they will suck, they can never take away the Batman Nolan Trilogy and their TV properties which are really great.
