DC Launches Two New Batman Related Titles

Two new series that take a look at elements from Gotham.

Entertainment Weekly announced today that DC comics is launching two new titles in October which will expand the Batverse. Neither of these books will actually be about Batman though. The first book is ARKHAM MANOR, where Wayne Manor will become a dungeon for the crazies of Gotham where inmates wind up dead. The series will be written by Gerry Duggan (NOVA) and drawn by Shawn Crystal (DEADPOOL). Here's the cover from EW.

The second Bat-related titles is called GOTHAM ACADEMY, which will appeal more to teens and it will be set in Gotham's most prestigious prep school where Bruce Wayne is a benefactor. The series is written by Becky Cloonan (DEMO) and Brendan Fletcher and drawn by Karl Kerschl (TEEN TITANS: YEAR ONE).

GOTHAM ACADEMY hits stores on October 1st, and ARKHAM MANOR comes out on October 22nd.

All the crying still isn't going to stop people from buying the books. Just watch the sales.

If you don't want em, stop buying Batman (lol)

Wish they'd figure out all of their existing properties instead of just continually throwing more Bats at us.

I really hope that Batman Cover is representative of the interiors, as I have been very fed up with this DC house style, all the DC books I love have different art styles, Batman, Wonder Woman, Detective, and Green Arrow. Also been loving Deadpool and Nova so I have happy Duggan will be writing.

What is this? Did the reporters go through some garbage containing some ideas DC Comics people came up with for April Fools Day jokes, but ultimately discarded because they're way too far-fetched to believe? Seriously, nobody asked for this. Nobody will buy this. A prep school that just happens to be in Batman's City? What stories could you possibly tell about that that will sell on the mainstream comics market? Fans are asking for series for all sorts of DC's properties and it's like they're quite purposefully coming out with series that nobody asks for. Like they just came out with Infinity Man and the Forever People. That will get cancelled real soon because nobody's interested. Same for these new titles. This really had better be some sort of joke or error in reporting, because with all the characters that should get series, we really can't afford for DC to be taking up slots in the New 52 with crap like this.

I agree. Especially since it's everyone's fault. Where were they when Team 7, Grifter, Demon Knights, and other books were on the shelves? Batman sales. They did not. Period.

I was at my comics shop, buying Demon Knights, and Resurrection Man. I supported non Batman titles.

All of the hate is quite expected.

Nevertheless, both titles seem pretty interesting. I'll certainly give them both a look.

DC needs more creative titles like these. They catch the eye a lot quicker than your typical Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman etc. books.

Yay...more Batman books.....still waiting for Wondergirl and Wonder Woman to meet though. And how about that Aqualad? Hey anyone remember Donna Troy? Oh oh remember when Wildstorm characters existed? Hey, if you spent 13 issues developing Rose Wilson you think you'd want to explore her character some more? Where's BoosterGold? Static Shock could really use a Urban Spider-man esque relaunch... Does anyone remember when Superboy and Supergirl had stories you wanted to read about? Where's BoosterGold? Isn't it funny how Shazam gets added to Justice League War, gets back up issues in the comic and now has a seat at the big table....but he still doesn't have a comic? Heh heh, want to hear something funny....Justice League International. Whatever happened to Etrigan? Let's all close our eyes count to tend and try to wish the New Gods a book before the next crossover. Where's Booster Gold?

You know with all this talk about characters i forgot that Teen Titans is getting the reboot we asked for 6 months ago.....so we totally got a victory....hurray

Booster will be getting one shot called Futures End Booster Gold #1. He will also, eventually, be in Future's End (the series).

Wonder Woman has been off in her own corner of the DCU, outside of Justice League and Superman/Wonder Woman, she has not interacted with the wider universe much.

No one bought the comics starring the Wildstorm characters. Grifter is one of the main characters in Future's End. The teaser images also imply other Wildstorm characters will be taking center stage as well.

Supergirl has been enjoyable. If you want a more traditional Supergirl, check out Justice League United.

Superboy needs a major overhaul and that will take time.

Johns has claimed Shazam as his own. He is only allowed to write 2 comics right now. He won't drop Justice League and he had to jump over to Superman to salvage that title. He has stated many times that he wants to do a comic for Cyborg, the Metal Men and Shazam. Just be patient. Until then, at least Shazam and Cyborg will be prominent character in JL.

-.-; Uugghh..... I'm a Batman fan but lately I will say I've gotten bored with Batman. I drooped Eternal and I still only get Detective and Batman comics. I'm not buying any other Batman books now. Sorry DC but for me you are shoving this down everyones throat. It's not that I don't like Batman hell I'm a large fan but it's getting boring now.

Gotham Academy sounds like a rehash of Avengers Academy. and Arkham manor sounds like that Batman else worlds where Bruce is a doctor there as well as going around as Batman (It's an old story hardly new). Sorry won't be getting these. Just sticking to Detective and Batman comics. Even if I am wrong about anything on these two I'd rather just stick with Detective and Batman comics.

As for people saying buy the titles that featured other characters? If you must know:

1) The wildstorm characters books sucked hard. DC should never have put the WS characters in the main DCU. And all the WS characters in the main DCU were pale shadows of what they were in their own universe.

2) If you must know Superman Unchained was one of the best selling Superman books until Jim Lee couldn't be bothard to finish it. Unchained was the best Superman series for a while now it's getting the drop. So it doesn't matter if you bought the series or not.

@scarletbatman: The thing about Wondergirl's connection to one of Wonder Woman's supporting characters was brought up a while ago outside of the Wonder Woman book, I get it...but Flash is also pretty isolated within his book and they found a chance to have at least a first meeting between him and Kid Flash. I get that it's a tight nit story, but Wondergirl's dad's head is sitting on Diana's mantle....come on.

And i feel Supergirl doesn't need to be depicted differently so much as she needs supporting characters instead of just reccuring ones...other wise she's been stuck in a pattern of being overwhelmed by a situation, then whining, then hitting stuff, which is a dreadful way to depict the main character for 30 issues.

My issue isn't strictly from a numbers point of view with the Wildstorm characters, if it was then Batman would win every time. But "The Ravagers", quality wise, was better then a good number of other books that lasted longer, but your not going to sell books if you don't put effort into marketing them. Bad books are trading off of popularity of character names, and good books that sell poor because their not made important outside their own pages, are a continuing problem but rather then address it....more Bat Titles is the answer.

Truthfully i just feel no one is a fan of DC characters at DC anymore, and it reflects in how depressing the over all feel of the Universe is.

So are they set in continuity? Because if so; the announcement of Arkham Manor sounds like a HUGE spoiler for what's coming in Batman and/or Batman Eternal. Suddenly Wayne Manor is where they house crazies? We've had no indication of this coming; but apparently it is, that's a huge freaking deal.

Unless it's OOC.

Truthfully i just feel no one is a fan of DC characters at DC anymore, and it reflects in how depressing the over all feel of the Universe is.

I think there is a place for Wonder Girl in Superman/Wonder Woman or in Wonder Woman post-Azz. Azz was just writing what essentially amounts to an elseworld comic that happened to share a universe with the other comics. The fact that it had little to nothing to do with the shared universe was a huge boon, in my book, as I have grown to enjoy the constant stream of crossovers and events lately. It was nice to find an in-continuity book that wasn't mired in the endless happenings of the month.

I have been shocked by how much they have isolated Supergirl from humanity. She really needs more touchstones to ground her. I am hoping Stargirl does just that.

Agreed on the marketing but... I can see DC's lukewarm interest. The masses say they want comics that do not star X, Y or Z, yet they never support any of those titles, even ones that star solid B-list characters. Heck, even characters that by all rights SHOULD be decent mid-tier (or much better) books are flagging. Last month Sinestro, Flash, Batgirl, Aquaman, Wonder Woman, Green Arrow and Red Hood all sold below 40,000 issues. Four of those are prominent member of the Justice League and two of those are beloved Bat Family characters.

By the same token, marvel has X-Men, Hulk, Iron Man, Thor, Magneto, Wolverine, Captain Marvel and Captain America, all of whom are A-listers (or darn near it), who are selling below 40k a month.
If neither company can turn some of their most beloeved heroes into successes, what hope do they have for B and C list characters?

I can see Wondergirl in SM/WW. Don't get me wrong, Wonder Woman is usually a favorite of mine from week to week, and i don't need a cameo from the Justice League to remember it's in the main universe....but if your going to spend so much time crafting Wonder Woman's world, lets use some of the characters that belong in her world....if only for a cameo.

I think that a big problem for Supergirl has been the attempt to not make her as comfortable as the Pre-52 Supergirl was with Earth. In a way they've given her more edge, but I think they need to loosen the reigns just a little bit because eventually the question will become "Why does this girl who hates Earth, has one friend, and doesn't want to adapt even bother to save it?". Hopefully she sticks around the JLU for a while and gets some development.

I can respect the idea of sales being in a slump 'so why rock the boat more?'. But I think for Marvel it's a bigger problem when they perform badly, simply because at this point they have more mainstream awareness behind their books. If they begin performing badly they can just do another "jumping on point" where they change the tone of the books to more of what the casual readers expect then the standard comicbook fan. With DC there is very little awareness of there books to begin with, no one walks into a comicbook store and says "i want to read Batgirl" on their first day, because for the most part there hasn't been anything to do with Batgirl in other mediums. And this isn't to say that Batgirl isn't one of the better books each month, but that if someone decides to drop the book....there's no one to replace them. And that's a book with "Bat" in the title....which can lure in people with that alone.

Sinestro had probably the best release of a fresh book in a while. Bringing in Green Lantern fans already, plus the people who saw his strong showing in Forever Evil....but what is making a person pick up his new title if they've never seen him before? Green Arrow has a TV show that's just started to get into strong comicbook elements now, but I know several people who didn't realize it was based on a guy from the same company as Batman. Product awareness isn't something that DC is doing very well with to begin with, and while all it takes is a mention of the new Avengers movie to correct sales at Marvel....DC doesn't have that level of relevance across the board anymore.

Really, more Batman books?!! Out of the hundreds of thousands of good to great characters DC has at their disposal. They give Batman two more new series? I mean, one hand I'm glad to see Shawn Crystal and Gerry Duggan (Two of my favorite people in the business right now get more work) but isn't this over-saturation of Batman a bit too much?

It seems like DC is just trying to wheel in more cash. They know Batman books always sell, so make more of them. I'm scared DC will eventually become nothing BUT Batman books.

This is all just a bit too.....befuddling

Static Shock had a book, nobody bought it,

So did Wildstorm, and Etrigan, and Booster Gold.

(Stormwatch, Demon Knights and JL International Respectively)

Wasn't Aqualad (Garth) referenced on Aquaman? So he might show up in a few issues

Pretty sure Shazam IS getting a comic, Geoff Johns already staked his claim on him

Plus isn't Infinity People a New Gods book?

It's not DC's fault if most people aren't into their other characters, Vibe got a pretty big push and look at him now, so had the Green Team and the Movement
