DC Launches Two New Batman Related Titles

Two new series that take a look at elements from Gotham.

Entertainment Weekly announced today that DC comics is launching two new titles in October which will expand the Batverse. Neither of these books will actually be about Batman though. The first book is ARKHAM MANOR, where Wayne Manor will become a dungeon for the crazies of Gotham where inmates wind up dead. The series will be written by Gerry Duggan (NOVA) and drawn by Shawn Crystal (DEADPOOL). Here's the cover from EW.

The second Bat-related titles is called GOTHAM ACADEMY, which will appeal more to teens and it will be set in Gotham's most prestigious prep school where Bruce Wayne is a benefactor. The series is written by Becky Cloonan (DEMO) and Brendan Fletcher and drawn by Karl Kerschl (TEEN TITANS: YEAR ONE).

GOTHAM ACADEMY hits stores on October 1st, and ARKHAM MANOR comes out on October 22nd.

I'm not sure I quite grasp the concept of Arkham Manor. Of the two I think the Becky Cloonan book sounds best.

This is coming from a hardcore Batman fan, but DC, we already have a million Batman (related) books, while characters like Cyborg don'teven have their own series.

What!? DC launching new Batman books!?!?!? No one could have seen that coming!

Snark aside, I'm really not getting what Arkham Manor is supposed to be about. Its set in Wayne Manor, but won't involve Batman, and its about dead Arkham inmates living in the basement? Just... huh?

Beginning to long for the day the Bat-bubble explodes in DC's face just so it will force them to move out of Gotham.

Like, it doesn't involve Batman but it takes place at his house? I'm glad, I'm not the only one that's confused by it. Do they pay rent or nah?

@squalleon: @lagozzino: @kivatt: Newsarama posted this update about Arkham Manor.

Meanwhile, as suspected, there is something happening to the current Arkham Asylum soon. "When catastrophe strikes Arkham Asylum, where will Gotham City house the world's most dangerous criminals? And when inmates are found murdered, what is Batman prepared to do in search of justice?" the press release asks.

So I guess Bruce is giving up his home to house the inmates? Still sounds like a odd premise.

@noj: I'd almost be prepared to take you up on it, because DC has for the past couple of years (wisely perhaps) avoided announcing anything major at SDCC since they have to fight for page space with Marvel and half of Hollywood. They've tended to save the announcements for later cons, when they arent just releasing it through the web, like here.

Of course DC added more Batman books. All DC cares about is Batman. It's company might as well change it's name to Batman. Batman Batman Batman. Everything is Batman is the motto of DC.

I've read some of her self published fantasy works like Wolves, The Mire and Demeter. I'm pretty sure Demeter got an Eisner nod this year too. That should give you an indication of her skill as a writer.

I agree. Especially since it's everyone's fault. Where were they when Team 7, Grifter, Demon Knights, and other books were on the shelves? Batman sales. They did not. Period.

I know Batman sells, but isn't this off-putting for casual/new readers? Like "Oh, yeah I totally want to get more Batman stuff because of whatever...but wait...there are like 7 books that he's on the cover of...how do I know what's happening? I don't want to buy all 7...never mind." Don't the more straightforward titles get more money usually, anyway? Like Batman or Detective Comics I would guess makes them the most money? I'm just spit-balling. Also, if that movie plan is correct and they are making Sandman and Shazam movies before the others...that's risky and different. Try that with comics, too.

@guardiandevil83: Exactly. Everyone keeps saying they want other characters to get titles, but don't buy them when they do. Batman sells, no need to get so annoyed by it.

More Batman? DC should just change their name to Batman comics since that seems to be the only thing they want to put any focus on. " Outsiders? No. Justice Society? Nah. New Gods? What?..No! More Batman? Yes! More Batman." It'll sell though so good luck to them.

Dayum, the hate is strong in this thread.

I know right.

I'm excited for these, more so Gotham Academy. Not huge with the art for Arkham Manor, but the idea intrigues me.

I love Batman, and more books that take place around him or his universe are welcome in my book. It's not like we won't see more, non-Batman related titles be revealed soon(er than later.)

Considering that these books are being announced in EW, my guess is they're already trying to target a non-comic-reading demographic here (especially with Academy). Not to say these won't be good for comic fans but I'm sensing more of a mainstream appeal here.

Anyway while I agree that the Batman-centric publishing model from DC is a bit ridiculous, this is the 75th anniversary so they're allowed to go a little overboard right now. IMHO.
