DC Entertainment Fights Hunger in Africa

The "We Can Be Heroes" campaign vows to help hunger in Africa through three different established aid groups.

DC Entertainment announced today that they are creating the "We Are Heroes" campaign in order to fight hunger in Africa while working with three established aid groups already in place: Save the Children, International Rescue Committee and Mercy Corps.

No Caption Provided

DC Entertainment, home of the world’s greatest super heroes, today unveiled an unprecedented giving campaign to fight the hunger crisis in the Horn of Africa. This multi-million-dollar commitment over the next two years will be supported across all Warner Bros. Entertainment’s and Time Warner’s businesses and feature DC Entertainment’s iconic Justice League characters, including Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, The Flash, Aquaman and Cyborg, issuing the call to action, “We Can Be Heroes.”

We Can Be Heroes will support the efforts of three humanitarian aid organizations working in Africa—Save the Children, International Rescue Committee and Mercy Corps—as part of the global effort to fight the current hunger crisis in the Horn of Africa. The region is suffering its worst drought and famine in over 60 years, with 13 million in need of critical assistance and 250,000 facing starvation in Somalia alone. Each partner organization was chosen for its track record of effective and expeditious humanitarian aid efforts in Africa.

Time Warner (Warner Brothers, Turner Broadcasting, Time Inc, HBO) will help spread awareness of this crisis through their outlets. Save the Children, International Rescue Committee and Marcy Corps will all share in the donation of at least $2 million through the next couple of years through cash donations, and other donations.

No Caption Provided

The We Can Be Heroes website (www.WeCanBeHeroes.org) is where more info about the movement can be found and consumers can make donations which will be matched by DC Entertainment 100 percent, up to a million dollars in donations. There is also branded merchandise on the site which DC will match 50 percent of the purchase price. There is also a newsletter to sign up for and an online community to join to keep yourself updated.

Each of the DC characters (listed above, and listed here) are a key to bringing in more awareness and will be a great face for this movement. The JoinWeCanBeHeroes site has a nice video and a link to the market where you can buy items which DC will match 50 percent. Currently, you can pick up a t-shirt, and iPhone case, a coffee mug, or a water bottle.

For more information, visit the website, and check out why this movement is so important.

Kinda hard to farm much of anything with no water, huh?

Is the drought every year? I don't think so.

The shirt is nice but charity goes against everything I stand for so.... Screw poverty. Get a job

You're telling them to get a job.. when there's no jobs to be found, and they starve to death because their own government won't do anything? Wow, you're cool.

I back DC on this movement 100%. Being both a comic fan and as someone who's worked with a charity in affrica before (and the last time i was there (in Kenya) the drought had just hit). Reading many of the commments already said it seems as though most of you agree with this, while others either dont understnad whats going on, dosnt understand the sheer numbers of people suffering and dying each day due to thris drought, or who think that this move by DC entertainment will ammount to nothing.

The drought has wiped out any small amount of crops available to large numbers of communities that would usualy keep them fed and alive for a certain amount of time. Most of the goverments in these countries are trying to resolve the problem but it's the problem of having their hearts in the right places, but not having the sufficient supplies and equiptment necessary to dela with the situation, and in the case of Somalia which is being affected the most no Goverment at all. DC's "We are the Heros" might be a drop of water in a vast ocean, but its one drop out of thousands helping out there.

We read these comics about heroes doing great things without questioning them, so lets do the same thing here. :)

I really want that shirt! $30 is double my t-shirt limit but if it's for charity I guess I can make an exception. Now just to find $30 for it....

While I'm not too crazy about most of their comics and heroes, I'm a pretty big fan of this idea. I think it's a wonderful opportunity for them to act as the heroes they tell stories about, and for us comic fans as well.

I plan to at least buy a shirt. Possibly more. I hope as many of us as possible will do the same.

I'm buying a shirt.

I'm proud to be part of a culture like comicbooks more now than ever before, this is a really fitting move on DC's part considering how big superheroes have become in the mainstream culture over the last few years and since we unfortunately live in a world where people like Superman don't exist... I guess the people who make Superman comics helping out is the next best thing?

Anyone else instantly think of Clark flying across the globe with 500 ton bags of food aid on his shoulders when they read the thread title?

Some of these comments are disturbing, however this is amazing and kudos to DC for helping out. There is a difference between being jobless and starving to death. Its amazing how you can spend damn near 20$ on comics but can't donate to a good cause...

While I won't call anyone out on their ignorance, I will say that at least in this country there are food banks and support systems to help people, They ones DC are trying to help do NOT have these systems in place. Most are responsible for growing or finding their own food on a DAILY basis. I applaud DC for doing something, regardless of the motive. BTW, I donated myself and plan to get the T-shirt.

I get to be the jerk again wont I? One multinational, multimedia Company pouring money to a charity and asking people to do the same won't save the World. We need a total overhaul of the system, and possibly stop interfering in other nations problems, in my experience that only makes things worst (That doesn't mean ignore other peoples pledge for help, just not try to solve problems we don't understand nor interfere with people that doesn't need help, I am a cynical I know)

That's the same thought I originally had, but it's nice to see some companies helping anyone out on this planet because there are tons of people less fortunate than us in this crazy world.
