DC Entertainment Announces New Creative Team for DETECTIVE COMICS

Find out what the new team has planned for Batman.

Last week Tony Daniel announced he was leaving DETECTIVE COMICS and had other projects in the pipeline. The big question remained, who would be taking over the title? Today, DC Entertainment has revealed the new writer and artist via their blog.

On our podcast I suggested Jason Fabok who has recently worked with Scott Snyder on the BATMAN ANNUAL with Mr. Freeze's origin. It turns out I was right on that one.

As for the writer, I suggested DC somehow clone Snyder but that could get a little messy. Instead, John Layman will be the writer. Here's what Layman had to say:

Obviously, this is a happily surreal and exciting turn-of-events for my career. Not only is this my first work within the DC Universe, but I get to work on one of DC’s undisputedly coolest and highest-profile characters. I’m going to take a look at the role of criminal organizations within Gotham City, hopefully from a perspective that does not get considered very often (if at all). From the symbiotic relationship a master criminal must have with Gotham in order to survive, to the lowly, often faceless criminal underling hoping to rise up the ranks. All that, plus Batman’s gonna play with a bunch of crazy new toys and kick all kinds of butt.

You can head on over to DC's blog to see what Fabok had to say.

DETECTIVE COMICS #13 is on sale October 3 and you can check out Fabok's cover up above.

Love this news. Big fan of Chew, and I can't wait to see what Layman does with Detective Comics.

Yeeeeeeeessssss.

Posted by kennybaese

Wait, the writer of Chew is writing TEC? I just decided to pay way more attention to TEC.

Posted by RedheadedAtrocitus

Right on! I expect good things from the team of Layman and Fabok.

Right? Why are all of the Batman books going to be amazing now? What about the other properties? THEY need better writers!

Looove the cover art, definately cant wait to see Layman's lurking in the criminal underworld; and intrigued to see what toys he is on about :)

Cool. Chew is a great title. and now they're taking over Detective? That's awesome. And Penguin is everywhere these days lol.

AWESOME AWESOME AWESOME - Going from 0 to 60 in quality!

Posted by The_Tree

Now I have a reason to pick up Detective Comics. Fabok's art is killer, and Layman's one of my favorite writers ever.

Wow. So like ALL of the Batman titles are gonna be awesome? Impressive.

Posted by Ganthetsward20

AWESOME loved his work on chew and i think that the perspective of the "bad guys" is a great way to kick it off! very excited to check it out.

Posted by Imagine_Man15

*Sigh.* Thanks a lot DC. I was only buying two bat books, Batman and Batman and Robin. Then Hurwitz took over Dark Knight, and I had to pick that up. Now this? Just take all of my money now and be done with it.

Posted by Loki9876

DC why are you doing this to my wallet?

Posted by Duke_Nasty

I didn't want to pick up anymore 3.99 titles but I'll have to give this a shot. Damn

SHUT UP AND TAKE ALL MY MONEY FOREVER

Posted by YMCMB

Kool hoping the new team succeeds

Posted by jsphsmth

Never read and of John's work, but list of works looks impressive. Cannot wait to read it.

Posted by wowylied

Detective comic and the dark knight were bad since the beginning, i hope those others guys will help the title.

Posted by Suprman

I honestly have never really read his work but I am interested. And that cover looks awesome. Finally, Is it just me or is DC trying to incorporate Penguin more and more into the relaunched universe?

Posted by zackattack529

this is great news for DC's flagship title.

BUT...i only want to read 2 bat titles( Batman, Nightwing)

so yaaa i wanna stick with Snyder's Batman on my tight budget, which is obviously the more dominant Bat-title.

so much to read so little time and money aaaaaaahhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!

It won't be after Layman comes onto Detective Comics.

@doordoor123: im going to have to disagree, Snyders dark and gritty writting is perfect for bat stories because of how snyder is heavily involved not just with batman, but Gothams history. he brings the bat stories to life! while layman is a good writter and will do great things for the title, i mean cmon...anyone at this point was better than tony daniel being on this title. lol

but my point is with Greg Hurwitz on dark knight, peter tomasi rocking batman and robin! layman would have to kick off his run with a bang to keep Detective comics above those titles...maybe this will be the 3rd or 2nd best selling BAT-TITLE...thats as far as it goes

Penguin was pretty lame when writers had him umbrella/bird-based committing crimes. When he became a "businessman" (as the owner of the Iceberg Lounge catering to Gotham's elite in the front rooms and brokering criminal enterprises out of the back rooms) he became a viable character and antagonist to Batman.

If Layman is going to be focusing on criminal organizations, then he needs to start with Penguin.

I'm going to have to disagree with YOU. Layman is one of the best writers in comics today. Snyder might have great dialogue and great ideas, but his execution isn't as great. Layman hits on all three. This guy and Robert Kirkman are the two best in the business right now. And Snyder's books might sell better than this because of ignorance, but that doesn't mean this book won't be better.

I,Vampire is one of the best books in DC, but that doesn't mean it is on top of the charts.

Posted by zackattack529

i agree with everything you just said Except,...why is it ignorance that has made Snyder successful on Batman? please explain?

Posted by Aph8825

Should be an awesome team! Cant wait to see what they have cooked up!

What I mean is that people are going to be unaware of this book because they didn't like the previous writer. It's live I,Vampire again how the book was seen to feature twilight-like vampires and turned off a lot of readers -- that is the reason it didn't sell as well as some other books of the same tone.

@doordoor123: i disagree again, even with Tony Daniel on the title, Detective STILL sold well as well as Paul Jenkins Dark Knight. detective is the flagship title, it wont fade into the dust in sales no matter who is on it...that goes for any bat title, most people(new readers) are honestly just reading bat titles and the justice league. and with the dark knight movie coming out this month you can expect more sales for the bat titles. the only difference now is they wont have to suffer Tony's bad writing on detective. all im saying is i dont think Layman is vastly superior to Snyder. forget about sales, sales mean nothing. im just saying is Snyder/ Capullo> Layman/ Daniels as far as batman goes.

Posted by doordoor123

What Layman said about Detective when it went to 3.99:

I'm sure DC is just responding to reader demands:
"Dear DC, please charge us an extra dollar for a mostly meaningless story by a creative team other than the headlining team that attracted me in the first place, for a story that, if it's not standalone and completely throwaway, only at best tangentially relates to the main one. We promise not to desert you en masse like the last time you did this!"

Okay -- and I think Layman is better than Snyder. That is my opinion and that is your opinion.

I don't know why Layman is working with DC anyhow. He hates DC. He has a bunch of posts on Bleedingcool where he pretty much bashes DC.

Posted by zackattack529

@doordoor123: thats easy..$$$$ lol

theres a new batman movie coming up, detective is the flagship title for DC, so its both a money thing and and Honor thing...itll boost his already impressive resume by having worked on detective and he'll be paid handsomely for it. all i can say is im glad DC made this move, its about time they get a good writter outside the box instead of just putting Rob Liefeld on ANOTHER title LOL

Very pleasantly surprised by this move. Looks like the line's getting whipped into shape.

@The Mighty Monarch:

Figured you'd have this reaction

Was kinda worried at first sight of this news, but after some research and hearing from others I'm curious and a little excited to see what Layman will do with this. I love the art already, and I loved Faboks work in the annual so all in all I'm pretty excited to see where this takes us.

Batman and Batman and Robin are amazing. Have been from the start.

Now Tec and Batman:TDK have amazing creative teams with some great ideas.

What is it going to take for DC to fix Batman Inc by replacing Morrison with Kyle Higgins? Higgins has the chops to write the Bat-family and he is a team player (please note his work on Gates and Nightwing.)

Now I can't stopping pulling Detective. Thanks a lot DC.

Ahem... DC, STAY THE F**K OUTTA THIS GUYS WAY! Let him do his thing and work his magic. Did anyone else read the take he wants to write and just about fainted? The ONLY thing bad about this news is we have to wait until October 3rd. Can't WAIT!!!!!!!!! EXPLANATION POINT!

I enjoyed the original run of Batman Incorporated. It was a little scatterbrained, but other than that, it was good.

I enjoyed Batman Annual #1 so I will definitely pick this up.
