DC Comics May Release Issue Zero Of Their New 52 Books In September

This fall, DC Comics may be planning to take their characters even further back in time.

We should clarify: as of this moment, this is a really big rumor. According to a source, DC may be planning for the release of #0 issues of their New 52 titles this September. What better way to commemorate the anniversary of their relaunch than by releasing issues that go beyond all those #1's?

No Caption Provided

The source indicated that the issues will go from #12 and then skip to #0 before moving on to #13 in October. So what could these zero issues be about? Apparently, there's a chance that these #0 issues will delve into the stories of the characters before the release of their #1's. If you ever wondered what Batman was doing before his #1 issue, this might be a good way to find out. Sounds like a good idea?

What do you think of going back in time to reveal the things that happened prior to the relaunch of the New 52? Would you pick up these #0 books? What characters would you like to go back and learn more about?

Let me just say, those issues better pretty damn spectacular if they are gonna throw a two month gap inbetween the story lines!

I'm game. I like the idea of going further back and know more about some of the New 52 characters.

If this is just a cheap trick to ''mess with the origins'' , I doubt it would be successful. I mean if they re-tell all the origin stories in a 0# comic....well that wouldn't serve to anything. Eight months in and we still have ''revelations'' each chapter and a Zero chapter might render those revelations mute. Or worse, it might throw off even more 'old fans' since they might feel the origin story of their favorite character got screwed ( although this happens a lot...)

In any case, if they think of doing this, I can think of 2 reasons.

1. They might think the first issues didn't do series justice ( argueable)

2. They think ,even with the relevations along the way, the new titles couldn't captivated the audience as much as they like to and they want to clearify things for the fans so they can enjoy the titles mroe ( as in the series felt incapable of handling the ''mystery past'' of the New 52 . Also a possibility )

Did Dan Didio just watch Memento?

Also unless your really good it's really difficult to make flashback's action-tastic without boring the [insert word I'd use on GiantBomb] out of the reader.

I'm going to end up getting them anyways since I've been buying every single New 52 comic every week, but I really hope it is going to be some kind of history based issue. Especially for all the characters who didn't get a new origin in their #1 and #2 issues. And please for the love of God, put Blue Beetle #0 about Ted Kord.

I like the concept of filling in this fairly new, sparser universe they've created.

I agree with cbishop in that they should have been done BEFORE the #1's came out, actually a lot of things should've happened before the New52 but thats another discussion. Anyways, these seem like an ok idea BUT ONLY if they are somewhere between 45-80 page 'spectacular's' that really delve into and bring cohesion to the universe and what happened with Flashpoint, the events that did/didnt happen etc...If it's just a dumb regular size 'filler' issue, then my disappointment in DC will continue to drop unless they are able to bring a lot of info and story, but I doubt that unless they are all longer.

Still sound kinda cool though, IF done properly

Sounds cool , but they sould release #0 and #13 together so we wont have to wait an extra month to continue the main story.

I think this is like 52 secret origins all done at one go. If its done well, I think it'll be even better for story telling.

Well i think this is an awesome idea.

Batman #0 may explain how he has so many Robins or it could be a retelling of his first encounter with the joker.

Red Hood #0 again could be a retelling of his death and his revenge against the Joker and Batman

Batgirl could show her recovery after Joker shoots her and how she managed to walk again or it coudl just be the killing joke retold

Really looking forward to these zero issues, why dont we all wait for the solicits for these before jump on the bandwagon and judge them.

But until DC actually announce this themselves on their own website then issues 0's are just a rumour for now.,

Why don't they do a ZERO on Didiot and fire him already? Sales are going down the toilet; six short months after the reboot DC sold overalll LESS comicbooks in March than July or August before the New 52!

Could be wonderful if DC can launch the #0 for all titles and delete all this crap of New 52. I need the real DC heroes back.

If not, DC, go to the Hell...

Horrible idea. I'm barely reading DC books as it is because of the poor storylines and poor iterations of most of my favorite characters, having an entire month of issues where none of the stories progress will just leave me without things DC related to read that month.

it'd be interesting if they could give you certain issue 0s when you bought the comic and if you wanted extra you pay.

but that's very unlikely because we would have already had free comic book day

I wander how they'd do that for the second wave and I also think people may complain if some of the cancelled titles aren't involved.

this might be a struggle for titles like firestorm where you see their origins.

Maybe you should actually read some of the relaunch before giving your opinion.

I'll give my opinion whenever I bloody well feel like it. I feel like it's a gimmick - an origin issue could just as well be told in the #13, rather than a #0. I have and I am reading some of the relaunch - it's not necessary to spend money on everything DC is putting out to justify my opinion. Geez, don't you have anything better to do than stalk my posts?

My logic is that whatever tied to #0 would be tied into future stories and at the same time revealing some "secret origins" for the characters.

Hmmmm...I don't know. I mean I like the concept but really it just seems to me that DC is STILL influenced by the Zero Month event eighteen years ago by doing things like this. Zero issues almost never have any continuity to other issues and tend to be, as others contend here, just filler issues for the sake of having filler issues. Seems WAY too soon to be doing this and at the same time seems unnecessary. I think the mysteries of our characters in the #1s is already well established and to do this would just be belaboring the point. I mean I'll get 'em but it just doesn't seem necessary to me.

@krspaceT: No, unfortunately most will only complain. The best part is that the people who are complaining, aren't reading the comics.

On the other hand, I am reading a lot of DC's comics and I am very excited about this idea.

This seems absolutely unnecessary.

I completely agree. I would go as far as to say that, in my eyes, the 'New 52' as a whole has only worked out positively for a few characters.

I would also agree with people's sentiments that they should have released #0's BEFORE they started wheeling out their #1's if only to orient us to what had and what hadn't happened in this 'new' universe. Almost a year in and I'm still not sure what is canon, what isn't, who exists, who is dead, who isn't. It's maddening.

Oh well. I guess I'll just keep reading Animal Man and nothing else.

I think it's crud. It was a gimmick for Zero Hour, that actually fit in the continuity. This seems unnecessary, or at least a year too late - why didn't they do this when the New 52 started? What interests me more is the #13's falling in October - lots of "unlucky" and "Halloween" stories that month? They're only a year in. I think it would make sense to jump into the next story arcs.

I guess this could create a jumping on point for new readers, who could then pick up the trades (as the majority of them would be out by then) and continue reading the series.

It was not appropriate to have each issue last September be an origin story, but it would be a very cool way of celebrating the first anniversary of the relaunch.
