DC Comics May Release Issue Zero Of Their New 52 Books In September

This fall, DC Comics may be planning to take their characters even further back in time.

We should clarify: as of this moment, this is a really big rumor. According to a source, DC may be planning for the release of #0 issues of their New 52 titles this September. What better way to commemorate the anniversary of their relaunch than by releasing issues that go beyond all those #1's?

No Caption Provided

The source indicated that the issues will go from #12 and then skip to #0 before moving on to #13 in October. So what could these zero issues be about? Apparently, there's a chance that these #0 issues will delve into the stories of the characters before the release of their #1's. If you ever wondered what Batman was doing before his #1 issue, this might be a good way to find out. Sounds like a good idea?

What do you think of going back in time to reveal the things that happened prior to the relaunch of the New 52? Would you pick up these #0 books? What characters would you like to go back and learn more about?

So... instead of continuing the stories, they'd be jumping backwards while making us wait an extra month for the next real issue? No thanks.

Zero issues are a poor as .1s. I really think they should be called P issues for prelude.

Sounds like a weird idea. It'd have to be done right... I mean, they did this in Zero Hour to show us what changes the tweaks to the timestream had and all...

Like always, forcing this kind of editorial decision generally onto all titles is stupid.

Some series, like Batgirl, would require entire arcs to fill the gap, others, like Green Lantern, pick up exactly where the pre-Flashpoint left off and finally none of the reboots should need it because by definition, they went from pre-reboot to post-reboot in a flash.

This just goes to show how idiotic the five year gap was (and how unsuccessful the rebooted series were but that is another question).

It makes sense really but I can't see myself buying anything from DC during that month.

Could be good if done right. Since I have liked a lot of what they have done in the new 52 and the reboot being mostly successful I have faith. Well a little bit because there were some things I didn't like.

i think for newer readers the Green Lantern books are the ones that need zero issues most..i tried getting my friend into green lantern but is confused....also i think the bat titles could use zero issues for people whod like to know who barbra was before bat girl. or how dick grayson became Nighting and how he gets his tech... i think zero issues can be done. i dont think id Buy them but theyd be good for new readers to the DCnU new 52

based on this months JL issue i thought they were gonna reveal elements from the past slowly over the course of arcs in every comic that needs it but if 5 yrs worth of stuff can be fit into one issue they cant mess it up n if it just establishes a plot point to pick up on in later issues then dont see the point of it.

What they should use this issue zero for is a chance to set continuity straight.

I think its a creative bit as a commemoration to their first year. I't would help maybe set thing in perspective. I imagine it would work like the issue they did in Red Hood and the Outlaws where they did an issue where they went back to what happened before the first issue of the series to show how Jason met Kori. That worked really well for that book so I dont know why it wouldnt work for most of the others. I just dont know what they will do for that book because its kinda already been done in that issue.

I'd rather just continue with the actual stories. It would be better if they released the 0 issues slowly over time whilst keeping the regular stories going.

I think it's crud. It was a gimmick for Zero Hour, that actually fit in the continuity. This seems unnecessary, or at least a year too late - why didn't they do this when the New 52 started? What interests me more is the #13's falling in October - lots of "unlucky" and "Halloween" stories that month? They're only a year in. I think it would make sense to jump into the next story arcs.

I'd buy if they were New 52-ified origin stories. If just random crap, I'll get what I normally get.

I don't blame them for doing it, it's a good idea but they should handle it better, putting all the titles (essentially) on hold for an extra month potentially delaying arcs is a bad decision. If they were going to do zero issues it should be out of the regular publishing timeline and it would have been more interesting to introduce annuals instead that way they could have a higher page count and dedicate more space to the story.

First up, Bleeding Cool isnt a good place to report from, since there's never a source to whatever Johnson is rumoring about.

That said, they should have done this 8 months ago...since JL certainly didn't deliver on the promise to explain where everything came from.

Issue zeroes are a bad idea. I've never inderstood the point of making them.

Besides, DC hasn't even done "The New 52" for a whole year yet and this seems a little putting the cart before the horse-esqe.

I'm sure I'll buy the #0 issues for all my favorite titles as long as they are at least still written by the same writer. This means we would actually get to see Buddy Baker being a superhero before his life went to hell. I wonder if they'll do one for Batwoman, seeing as how her series already had a #0 before the new 52?

I agree with the idea that these should be done over time. I'm not against the idea, in itself, but surely the idea of good storytelling is that they get across what's changed and why while doing it as part of a story. Johns is managing to look back with Aquaman and it's great stuff. This seems a little gimmicky and I'd prefer they didn't break the flow of the stories.

Might be nice in some cases to explain characters' backstories (like for Exoristos in Demon Knights) but in some cases I feel they won't add much (like in the case of Superman).

well considering that i have a standing order at my comic book shop i would have little choice but having to pick up the issue #0, but really im not interested in why they did before issue 1, maby when issue 1 came out it would have been nice, but issue 12? it just feels like a month of filler, and concidering how many stories are being told it'll probably do more damage than good.

chronilogically issue 0 are good for people who are unfamiliar with the said title as it introduces them, there by leaving issue 1 to just be the beginning of a storie and not an origien story.

If this were the case, a bunch of single issue secret origins could be useful in answering different questions about the timeline. I wonder what a Justice League issue zero would look like?

I'm in, no matter what. That said, I guess I'd prefer for the titles to keep ticking as they are, with the issue 0s popping up along the way as needed to add to the story. That said, it'll be an interesting month. I end up quite enjoying these wideline 'concept' events, like 'Nuff Said, back in the day for Marvel. And I love issue #0s... hopefully it doesn't jam up or frustrate too many creators.

This just in: The Flash #0 will star Wally West! Batgirl #0 will star Stephanie Brown and Cassandra Cain! Blue Beetle #0 will star Ted Kord! Wonder Woman #0 will star Donna Troy!

This seems fine. It's just gonna be another story. I just hope they're good. If you're gonna make an special issue, make it good. If it's not good, throw it out and write a new one.

I would so be on board with this. Hope it happens.

It was not appropriate to have each issue last September be an origin story, but it would be a very cool way of celebrating the first anniversary of the relaunch.

I guess this could create a jumping on point for new readers, who could then pick up the trades (as the majority of them would be out by then) and continue reading the series.

Not a gimmick, a great way of celebrating the anniversary of the relaunch. DC had no intentions of making each first issue last September an origin story. One year later, it is a great idea to show fans who are invested in the characters where they came from and how they came to be.

Maybe you should actually read some of the relaunch before giving your opinion.
