DC Comics Announces the "Second Wave" of "The New 52"

Six new titles in and six titles are out.

This is a day we all had a feeling was coming. DC Comics is ready to announce six new titles coming to the "New 52." It's a day of excitement as we prepare for more new great titles. The unfortunate bit is these six new titles will be replacing six existing titles. It looks like DC is planning on keeping the number of ongoing titles at 52, something I've mentioned several times (once they have more than 52 ongoing titles it would be weird to still call it "The New 52").

No Caption Provided

Posted on DC's The Source, here is the "Second Wave" of new titles coming this May.

* BATMAN INCORPORATED - Writer: Grant Morrison. Artist: Chris Burnham. The acclaimed ongoing writer of ACTION COMICS, Grant Morrison, presents a fresh take on BATMAN INCORPORATED, in which the Batman brand is franchised globally in preparation for a major international threat.

* EARTH 2 - Writer: James Robinson. Artist: Nicola Scott. The greatest heroes on a parallel Earth, the Justice Society combats threats that will set them on a collision course with other worlds.

* WORLDS' FINEST - Writer: Paul Levitz. Artists: George Perez and Kevin Maguire. Stranded on our world from a parallel reality, Huntress and Power Girl struggle to find their way back to Earth 2. Perez and Maguire will be the artists on alternating story arcs.

* DIAL H - Writer: China Miéville. Artist: Mateus Santoluoco. The first ongoing series from acclaimed novelist China Miéville, this is a bold new take on a cult classic concept about the psychological effects on an everyman who accidentally gains powers to become a hero.

* G.I. COMBAT - Writer: J.T. Krul. Artist: Ariel Olivetti. Featuring the return of a classic DC Comics series, THE WAR THAT TIME FORGOT, along with rotating back-up stories and creative teams - including THE UNKNOWN SOLDIER, with writers Justin Gray and Jimmy Palmiotti and artist Dan Panosian; and THE HAUNTED TANK, with writer John Arcudi and artist Scott Kolins.

* THE RAVAGERS - Writer: Howard Mackie. Artist: Ian Churchill. Spinning off from TEEN TITANS and SUPERBOY, this series finds four superpowered teens on the run and fighting against the organization that wants to turn them into supervillains.

== TEASER ==

You have to admit those sound pretty cool. Now the bad news, Which titles will be reaching their conclusion in April with their eighth issues? BLACKHAWKS, HAWK AND DOVE, MEN OF WAR, MISTER TERRIFIC, O.M.A.C. and STATIC SHOCK will be the titles getting replaced. It's unfortunate but many of us have seen this coming.

This doesn't mean it's the end for the characters appearing in those books. This is what Bob Harras, DC Entertainment Editor-in-Chief had to say:

The excitement of the initial launch of DC COMICS-THE NEW 52 was in seeing the re-imagining of these classic characters and concepts. The 'Second Wave' is all about world-building. Many of the characters from our canceled books will appear in DC COMICS-THE NEW 52 titles, and in some very surprising ways. We're developing stories that reach from cultures around the globe to parallel worlds. We're just getting started.

The DC Universe is heating up.

@spiderbat87: Agreed. I'm actually one of the few that liked Blackhawks. Men of War was OK, but there wasn't enough Sgt. Rock.

JL back up?

Yup, starting soon, there will be a back up feature written by GJ and drawn by Gary Frank called the Curse of Shazam, featuring Captain Marvel.

Interestingly, while the 6 cancelled titles are not the bottom 6 on the charts, they were my bottom 6 predictions for January's numbers. Could I be on to something? (Probably not) But out of interest's sake, the next 6 bottom in my prediction chart are Captain Atom, Blue Beetle, Grifter, Voodoo, Resurrection Man and Legion Lost.

Edit: Not that those are going to be cancelled next, nor do I encourage such speculation, nor do I believe that people should stop buying those books because they fear that possibility.

Yea from issue 7 onwards I believe. If Captain Atom, Grifter or Legion Lost get canned I will actually hunt you down...

Ah. That's cool I guess. I'm down for GJ. You like Legion Lost?

I'm a big Legion of Superhero's in general. Granted #1 was pants but it's been getting a lot better with every issue, I'd see it getting cancelled anyway.
Lol at yet again turning it into a competition between the big two

@Omega-Man :And he is a recurring character in Batwing as well (where does Batman get enough free time to go to Africa anyway?!). Not to mention he guest-appears in other completely unrelated titles (he's appearing in Resurrection Man and I, Vampire next month)

It is easy money though, I guess...

Static shock is predictable as with O.M.A.C and mr terrific. 2 black character based titles out...=[

However powergirl fans rejoice, let's hope she's written with the same edge as Amanda Conner and Jimmy's series PG.

I'm not surprised by Hawk & Dove and Static Shock. I've been wondering which titles would survive. Six titles given the door after only eight issues.

The best part of the story is James Robinson on the Justice Society. He's proven that he has no Earth One, or Earth Prime counterpart. He could probably defeat the Crime Syndicate, with a little help from Aquaman and J'onn J'onzz...

Huh? Huntress and Powergirl in World's Finest? since when are those two considered world's finest? Thats Superman and Batman's title not there female rip offs. Also on our earth? so it's official that Huntress' mini is set on Earth 2 along with Powergirl? so World's finest is on Earth 0/new earth? I'm not sure if I like that not to mention they are called 'World's finest' since again thats Superman and Batman's title.

Also it's cool to see Batman Inc is getting more lime light again but....why does the new 52 need so many Batman titles? It's pretty much 90s Spiderman with Marvel comics all over again.

Batman

Detective comics

Batman The Dark Knight

Batman & Robin

Batman Incorparated

(Forgot to say his other appearances in both Justice League and JLI)

Thats FIVE Batman books really? do we need FIVE Batman comics? I mean yeah I like Batman but wow five Batman books and Superman and Wonder woman barely have two books between them. They are as much the flag ship characters of DC comics as Batman is. Even though I hate the reboot WW's origin since they ripped off Cassandra Sandsmark's origin who is WW side kick Wonder girl (before reboot).

I was decently fond of O.M.A.C. (I know, I was surprised too) but I understand why it found the chopping block. I'm hyper-enthusiastic about some of the new titles... intrigued by a few... and for now, getting them all. Net gain/loss? 0 titles.

At least they made the right choices in which books get dropped, unfortunately they're replacing them with titles that will do equally poorly (except Batman).

I think Dial H will do well, being Vertigo like an all.

I love the character Static Shock & buy each issue every week, but if they add him to Teen Titans (a title I don't read)... it won't be the same. Maybe sometime in the future we will see him return to his own series & go up against some of his enemies from the TV series and newly comic created ones. Although I am looking forward to Dial H, because it seems like an interesting comic. If I get into Dial H & it get's cancelled with issue eight... I'll just read the Batman titles only.

Static cancelled!?.....NNOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHH!!!!!! Everything else I knew they were going to kick the bucket eventually. I wanted to get into O.M.A.C hearing from a buddy that is the kind of book I like but apparently i will get the trade instead. But the good thing is that other tittles are getting through as we can experience more corners of this DCnU. Dial H sounds interesting and Batman Inc I'm sold since I've been reading it since the previous volume. I just hope static joins the teen titans eventually and later on in the future he gets another chance for a solo with a much lighter tone.

(P.S: why wasn't red hood and the outlaws cancelled? that's kinda one of the few that deserved to end)

It started off great, then got confusing as f**k and now it became better. Sad to see it go.

I don't care what people say, I was hoping to see Power Girl on that list of upcoming titles. I thought the newer series had some good stories. They could pair her with other of the big ones like Batman and Superman and like Marvel is doing with Avenging Spider-Man... that would be cool.

@EdgerJoker: Cosign. It's annoying. Even if Mr Terrific or Static Shock had a solid writer and artist, I still feel like those would be low sellers. Look at Black Panther. His recent series was leagues better than Static and Mr Terrific and it still got canceled due to low sales. I guess they'll keep filling the "diversity" quota for team books and call it a day smh.

Are you saying readers are racist?

It could not just be that people usually buy books involving the big seven of the DCU and/or written by talented creative teams rather than ones with very secondary characters and crappy creative teams (and that pretty much goes for all six of them, regardless of race, gender or sexual orientations).

some of the new titles look good...sad to see no mention of Spartan, Zealot or any of the other Wildstorm characters though...

@Wolverine0628:It was really only #1 that was bad. Legion Lost has since gotten a lot better.

Oh, and Dial H for Hero will be edited by Karen Berger, Senior Vice President and Executive Editor over at Vertigo. This, plus the one piece of has (possibly a cover?) has gotten me interested.

One Thing I do not get is DC's choice in the new series, except for the first 2-3 (because no series should have the right to call itself that if it does not actually deliver the one and only World's Finest and not their super-daughters), especially when still have so many good unused great characters.
