DC Comics Announces the "Second Wave" of "The New 52"

Six new titles in and six titles are out.

This is a day we all had a feeling was coming. DC Comics is ready to announce six new titles coming to the "New 52." It's a day of excitement as we prepare for more new great titles. The unfortunate bit is these six new titles will be replacing six existing titles. It looks like DC is planning on keeping the number of ongoing titles at 52, something I've mentioned several times (once they have more than 52 ongoing titles it would be weird to still call it "The New 52").

Posted on DC's The Source, here is the "Second Wave" of new titles coming this May.

* BATMAN INCORPORATED - Writer: Grant Morrison. Artist: Chris Burnham. The acclaimed ongoing writer of ACTION COMICS, Grant Morrison, presents a fresh take on BATMAN INCORPORATED, in which the Batman brand is franchised globally in preparation for a major international threat.

* EARTH 2 - Writer: James Robinson. Artist: Nicola Scott. The greatest heroes on a parallel Earth, the Justice Society combats threats that will set them on a collision course with other worlds.

* WORLDS' FINEST - Writer: Paul Levitz. Artists: George Perez and Kevin Maguire. Stranded on our world from a parallel reality, Huntress and Power Girl struggle to find their way back to Earth 2. Perez and Maguire will be the artists on alternating story arcs.

* DIAL H - Writer: China Miéville. Artist: Mateus Santoluoco. The first ongoing series from acclaimed novelist China Miéville, this is a bold new take on a cult classic concept about the psychological effects on an everyman who accidentally gains powers to become a hero.

* G.I. COMBAT - Writer: J.T. Krul. Artist: Ariel Olivetti. Featuring the return of a classic DC Comics series, THE WAR THAT TIME FORGOT, along with rotating back-up stories and creative teams - including THE UNKNOWN SOLDIER, with writers Justin Gray and Jimmy Palmiotti and artist Dan Panosian; and THE HAUNTED TANK, with writer John Arcudi and artist Scott Kolins.

* THE RAVAGERS - Writer: Howard Mackie. Artist: Ian Churchill. Spinning off from TEEN TITANS and SUPERBOY, this series finds four superpowered teens on the run and fighting against the organization that wants to turn them into supervillains.

You have to admit those sound pretty cool. Now the bad news, Which titles will be reaching their conclusion in April with their eighth issues? BLACKHAWKS, HAWK AND DOVE, MEN OF WAR, MISTER TERRIFIC, O.M.A.C. and STATIC SHOCK will be the titles getting replaced. It's unfortunate but many of us have seen this coming.

This doesn't mean it's the end for the characters appearing in those books. This is what Bob Harras, DC Entertainment Editor-in-Chief had to say:

The excitement of the initial launch of DC COMICS-THE NEW 52 was in seeing the re-imagining of these classic characters and concepts. The 'Second Wave' is all about world-building. Many of the characters from our canceled books will appear in DC COMICS-THE NEW 52 titles, and in some very surprising ways. We're developing stories that reach from cultures around the globe to parallel worlds. We're just getting started.

The DC Universe is heating up.

I'm sorry Mr. Terrific and Static Shock were cancelled. The characters have been written better, there was so much potential.

I know I'm going to get hate for this but PLEASE don't bring in Power Girl, Super Girl has just started and having two of them running around is just unneeded. It's a shame Men Of War is getting replaced by G.I Combat but Unknown Solider will be in it?!?  I was also really enjoying Black Hawks so thats a shame. Will Rose and  Grant Wilson be in Ravagers?

Edited by Saren

This is going to make my pull list bigger, since I wasn't reading any of the cancelled titles. But I'm going to pick up Batman Inc, Earth 2, World's Finest and Ravagers.

But how the hell did Hawkman and Green Arrow avoid the chopping block??

HA! power girl returns!

So will Batman Inc. have been rebooted or will it be a direct continuation of Batman Inc PRE-New 52?

@BatClaw89:

meh, I haven't heard anything positive about that title.

Eh, can't say I'm excited about any of these. If The Ravagers has an interesting roster, I'll check it out.

Even though it was incredibly average, Static had potential. It's a little annoying that Static got cancelled but I'm not surprised. DC never seemed interested in Static, nor did they know what to do with him. You'd think DC would treat a character who had his own tv show better but I guess not.

And I can't believe DC added another Batman title. People complain about Marvels obsession with Spiderman, Wolverine, etc but Batman is just as bad.

The USA Today articles don't have more details on Ravagers, but I would say that Fairchild and Rose are most likely in it. There is a small possibility of Superboy since they are using Ravagers (his old team) as the title and he too is on the run from NOWHERE.

@KidSupreme: Probably after his backup tale in Justice League is complete.

DC has other comics that are on the bubble, so they will need a third wave around September to replace those titles.

Haven't read any of those titles that got dropped. But I'm looking to pick up Batman inc, Earth 2 and Ravagers. That's weird that they call it Earth 2 though. Why not just name it JSA?

They should've canceled Demon Knights over Men of War, Men of War was one of the best ongoing!

They can take my Demon Knights when they pry it from my cold dead hands! :-) But then I didn't read Men of War so can't comment on the comparison. It's always sad to see any title go down, there's probably a fan out there for almost everything.

I'm mostly OK with the changes though, OMAC was the only thing I was getting each month and I was thinking about cancelling it anyway (it was fun but getting repetitive).

And the new titles sound decent, some more than others. China Miéville's name on anything makes me excited so Dial H is top of my list. I'll probably check out what my budget allows and see how I feel.

Nice to see Power Girl back, it's a shame about Static

What's the difference between Sgt. Rock and G. I. Combat?

I'm excited about the new titles! But sad to see Mr. Terrific and Static go, they had potential.

Creative teams changes for both comics. Tony Daniels is now co-writing Hawkman and Nocenti takes over GA.

DC will wait to see if the changes work. If not, maybe they will be cancelled as part of the Third Wave in the Fall.

The only ones I'm sort of upset about are Hawk and Dove and Mister Terrific. I thought those were both pretty good. I am sort of interested in the Earth 2 title, but the other ones sound sort of boring.

Posted by AMP - Seeker of Lost Knowledge

Too bad Static Shock will be getting the boot.

I'm more interested in The Ravagers. I probably guess that Rose Wilson will be in the group, but will be the other three members?

Posted by Herx

Well I'm lossing 2 titles and gaining at least 4 others. DC you sure know how to rob me of my money. So bye bye Mister terrific, i was goingn to drop you anyway but seeing how much time you have left i might as well get the last three issues. Static Shock hmmm, i was originally planing on dropping it, but it has gotten better, to bad.

Batman Inc. Well I'll give it a try, and see if its an improvement over the last one (hopefully actualy focusing on other members of batman inc rather than just batman, because lets face it he's getting a little bit to popular in this new 52 :P).

Earth 2 Hell yes. I do ever so love my JSA and i want them back. Best hero team evaaaaaaaaaaa XD

Worlds Finest. Powergirl = Winning! Plus i like the creative team (always helps)

The Ravagers Well why the hell not. Sounds like a ride.

As for the other 2, Dial-H does have some appeal i guess, but it also seems a bit vague in explanation other than "people waking up with super powers". But I guess that ill keep my eyes open and see where it goes. G. I combat, nah. just isnt my thing. Now lets all just wait and see the new cover releases.

Based on the description its sounds like it will be based on Dinosaur Island for the main stories

To be fair those are kinda the one's I expected not to last, but I'm happy demon knights isn't on that list

Posted by Utandi

Yeah! Sounds very good!

Posted by BlackArmor

I'm still looking for Red and Black with Tim and Cass. gonna go write DC abut it now

Edited by cosmo111687

@RazzaTazz: It sounds like a misstep to me. With so many books fans are clearly interested in buying (Batgirl, Captain Marvel, and Secret Six come to mind), reproducing what I guess is virtually the same book (minus the name recognition), doesn't sound like a good marketing strategy (no matter how many dinosaur are in it...How many dinosaurs are in it?...*interest piqued)

Damn it, still no Azrael (Michael Lane)

Super excited for Earth 2 and World's Finest....and Ravagers could be good to...hopefully it's got Ravager and Fairchild in it

Well not a surprise with Static or Mr. Terrific sunk by poor writing and mediocre art. Still hopefully we see them both elsewhere Mr. Terrific in Earth 2 and/or World's Finest. Static in Teen Titans or Ravagers.

I will be getting four of these new books: Batman Inc, Earth 2 (although roster impacts this), Ravagers and World's Finest

I'm hoping to see an apatosaurus herd riding Apache helicopters.

It sucks to see the other comics go, but waking up to news about a new Power Girl book was simply amazing.

Posted by DrewHLMW

Sad to see Hawk and Dove go but looking forward to Earth 2 and world's finest, not sure about batman inc yet.

Will also give ravagers a go, dont care about dial h or g.i. combat.

But this earth 2 huntress is helena wayne right? a different one form the one in her own mini series, hope she has some interaction with batman along the way.

World's Finest and Ravagers sound interesting.....Might give Earth 2 a shot as well.

Hawk could go back to being Extant/Monarch, that was awesome.

They mentioned that Earth-2 will be brought back before the #1's of the New 52 where announced a while back, I'm glad they're brining it back, should be great to read Earth-2.

Pretty sure that the Huntress miniseries is starring Helana Wayne, regardless of what the original solicits stated. DC has hinted as much and this announcement makes it that much more probabale.

I just found some exclusive artwork from G. I. Combat.

This is not from G. I. Combat

Can't say I 'm surprised about the series that got canceled. Some of these new ones sound pretty interesting too. Glad the Huntress won't be disappearing after her current mini-series finishes. I am surprised they're letting J.T. Krul take a shot at another title....

Now I gotta go dig out my old Calvin and Hobbes collections,

I agree about Krul. I keep trying to figure out why DC signed him to an exclusive contract. His writing has been average at its best (Teen Titans). Hopefully GI Combat is where he will shine.

well I can't say I'm surprised Mister Terrific and Hawk and Dove are getting the axe. I heard a few good things about Men of War and Blackhawks sounded cool, but I guess dem's the breaks.

I'm cautiously interested in China Mieville's Dial H, but I'll probably pass unless it is overwhelmingly well received, since his novels are basically slow motion snuff films. I'll be looking into Batman Inc, World's Finest (finally more powergirl) and of course Earth 2.

Earth-2!!!!
