DC Comics Announces the Return of The Joker

It's the return of Batman's greatest nemesis!!

Who is the greatest comic book villain of all time? There's no doubting the ruthlessness and uncalculating way the Joker operates. When it comes to Batman villains, he clearly holds the top spot among them. He is the only character that has hit so close to Batman's home. He's already shot and crippled Batgirl and brutally killed Robin. Both may have gotten 'better' but the fact he managed and did so remains. Since the beginning of the "New 52," there really hasn't been much of the Joker seen, aside from his face. The big question on all of our minds is where will he turn up next?

Today DC has announced that the Joker will return in October's "Death in the Family" story arc and it will be in a "horrifying, unnerving and huge way."

Who will be responsible for bringing the Joker back? How about Scott Snyder, Greg Capullo and Jonathan Glapion in the pages of BATMAN? It seems it will be more than just Batman dealing with Joker. Batman will also have to fight to protect his secret identity along with those who fight alongside him.

== TEASER ==

We've heard Scott Snyder talk about his affection and fascination with Batman. How does he feel about Joker? Snyder shared a few words on DC's blog.

Joker is my favorite villain of all time. Not just in comics. In everything - film, books, TV. He's the greatest, hands down. So this story is something extremely important and personal to me - something I've been building in my head ever since I started working in Gotham. Basically, this is my big exploration of the Joker, my ARKHAM ASYLUM or THE KILLING JOKE, only bigger in scope. Bottom line: it's the biggest, baddest, most shocking Joker story I could tell. This is Joker completely unleashed. He has been away for a full year planning this revenge, watching, plotting, setting things up. And now he's back. He has his traps set, his knives sharpened... And wait 'til you see him. Greg's sketches literally gave me chills. Point blank: This is Joker like you've never seen him before. He has a mission. He has a secret. And he has a serious axe to grind with Batman. It isn't going to be pretty, but it's going to be a wild ride. Thanks for taking it with us.

Scott's not the only one excited. Here's what Greg Capullo had to say:

When Scott told me that he'd written a Joker story for our next arc, I couldn’t contain my excitement. Talk about a dream come true! For me, the Joker is the ultimate rogue and the villain I most wanted to draw. I gotta tell you, after hearing what the story is about, this isn't a dream come true. It's a nightmare! A macabre and bloody, flesh crawling nightmare. We hope you'll have the nerve to face what's coming. Warning: It ain't for the faint of heart!

If those words aren't enough to get you excited, I'm not sure why you're reading this news. As exciting as this is, there clearly is a reason to be a little scared. This isn't going to be a fun romp in the park for Batman. Snyder and Capullo already put Batman through the ringer with the Court of Owls. This sounds like it's going to be an encounter unlike any the two have had before.

The Joker makes his return on October 10 in Batman #13. Mark your calendar.

Yes, but when #13 comes out it will have been 13 issues since (counting #0). And it's not like Amazing Spider-Man which is out twice a month. Joker's leaves for just over a year in THE NEW 52. You'd think he'd be headlining it along with Batman in Bat titles but he went off the radar.

Sure, ten issues, 13 issues, it's still far, far to little to announce a freaking return story. A year, in comic book terms, isn't 'gone'. It's 'went out to lunch, be back in five'.

Frankly, I think he should have stayed in the limbo for at least another few years.

Sounds cool. I'll have to get caught up with Batman.

I'm glad the joker's back but I worry about what he'll become. Will there be any room for gags and pies to the face and other clown stuff amongst all the knives, flesh and blood? More and more it feels like he's turning into Jigsaw.

Buuut maybe that's a stretch. hopefully he'll be more like Heath Ledger's Joker, I'm cool with that.

That teaser is amazing, one of the best ever.

I'm not that excited about this, just extremely excited!!!!!!!!!

I'm a hundred times more excited with this than Marvel's lame "This is War" promo.

FINALLY!!!

Yes!!!!!!! Snyder and Capullo are the greatest team up in comics since Millar and McNiven & Azzarello and Bermejo. I have loved every issue of the Batman. Every issue is better than the last. I can not wait to see how they do this.

Just say Scott Snyder and I'll be there

Posted by X9

Cool, but at the same time... Gotham can't really hold their bad guys back, can it? It's a little annoying.

But, yeah, that's how you keep a title going. And that freak is DA freak.

How disappointingly conservative. I was not impressed with his take on the Joker in Tec...at all. But hey, maybe he'll pull it off much better this go around. Though I must say, whoever postulated on the boards that having the Jokers face cut off in Tec was Snyder's idea and setup for a later arc. Man this face cutting thing really better pay off cuz damn was it frakin' retarded as all hells.

@ScarlettLynn: Ah, thank you. I misread.

Edit: apparently I didnt - guess Tony has Jason on the mind

Skip to 1:01. That pretty much perfectly summarizes my feelings about this news. Unfortunately, I couldn't find a proper .gif of that part, so I had to post the whole video. But hey, even still, it's 2 minutes of the 2nd most underrated comedy on TV (behind Community)

Joker is one of my favorite villains of all time. him, Doctor Doom, Lex Luthor, Red Skull and the Green Goblin are my top five favs of all time!

Ok, yeah, that totally sums everything up.

Why do I get the feeling they're gonna make him look like Heath Ledger's Joker?

I need to come up with a new word for how excited I am about this!

Great promo, for some reason it reminded me of Heath Ledger in a Dark Knight poster.

Maybe.not,.he.was.in.the.first.issue.of.Detective.Comics.for.a.few.frames.before.his...face-lift

And.when.Dick.pretended.to.be.him.in.Batman.1.for.some.dumb.reason,.Joker.didnt.look.like.Ledger

Posted by Smart_Dork_Dude

@KnightRise: For some reason I'm just thinking this whole face removal thing is going to lead to a glassglow grin and scraggly hair.

Posted by Vision2.0

Scott Snyder + Greg Capullo + Joker = The greatest joker story ever told...

Posted by ScarlettLynn

@ComicStooge: Technically it's "Death OF the Family". They still haven't fixed it in the original article.

I cant wait for Snyder & Capullo's Joker!!

@ScarlettLynn: Ohhhhh...Thanks, dude.

Thank you! Batman needs his "Moriarty of Madness" to keep his edge.

@jsphsmth: Yeah, after teasing us a few issues earlier. :)

I'm so looking forward to this. Ever since Joker's face was cut off I've been askin' "Where the h*** is he?!" Even Harley's side trip in Suicide Squad yielded no answers.

@TheHeat: Have to agree with you there.

@ExtraLarge: I definitely feel you on Gordon but I hope he's not killed off. I don't know what I'd do if Alfred got killed off. He's my favorite Batman character.

@longbowhunter: True, absence makes the heart grow fonder.

@Ravager4: Well-played.

@Master_Thief: He is awesome and deserves some time in the spotlight.

Why am I feeling like we gonna see a lot of nostalgic moments in this arc ? And probably Damian will be the target of it ? I mean I can't think of Babs getting shot again , Red Hood doing his own thing and Batman will be battling Joker...

I think after the latest filler for Talia and Damian, I can see him being the target of Joker, maybe wanting to recreate Batman's lowest moment ?

Whatever that is, THIS is how you make a teaser...I mean I am literally terrified to think what can they make the Joker do ? Especially after Court of Owls ?!

Posted by kal-el09

Aww man I can't wait!!! I hope jason has some part in this! :D

Posted by Suprman

@Smart_Dork_Dude: They might. I mean they sort of did that with the Under the Red Hood Movie, and I liked that design.

Posted by Smart_Dork_Dude

@Suprman: Really the only thing they took from Ledger's Joker, as far as I could tell, was the whole "Agent of Chaos" aspect. The rest of his design looked straight up Classic Joker.

Posted by Suprman

@Smart_Dork_Dude: They also gave him Ledger's long hair and facial structure, at least I think so. I don't really think them using a design that looked like Ledger would be a bad thing, sort of like Gary Frank's Superman design, it looks like Christopher Reeve. It's a good way to honor Ledger's version of the character.

A year is a long time to wait on a cliffhanger! Its different than say Jean Grey returning because Jean grey has been dead. She hasn't been doing anything. But Joker has been up to something. And he's been setting things up since Detective comics #1. I think a year is definitely a good amount of time to bring him back into the center stage.

Posted by Smart_Dork_Dude

@Suprman: Oh I'm not complaining that they might be doing it, I'm just saying that I'm getting a strong feeling that they're going to do it. I love Gary Frank's Superman, it just proves that Christopher Reeve truly was Superman and no one else will ever come close to capturing what he brought to the role. Regardless of what version of Supes I'm reading, classic to the relaunched version, I hear Reeve's voice.

Posted by noj

@AtPhantom: Joker's been around in the Batman universe but he hasnt REALLY been at the center of a story for quite a few years. He had a supporting role in Morrison's Black Glove story line and at the end of his Batman and Robin run, and his cameos in the Black Mirror and the first issue of 'Tec but as for him being the MAIN villain in a story arc I cant really remember when the last time was.

Posted by GBrutality

buuuuuuut i'm confused.

so, when his face got torn off that was one of the first run-ins with batman. however, it's still canon that he shot barbara and killed jason and did everything he usually did, when he super had a face.

but he...doesn't now? and batman never found him after that crappy villain the dollmaker helped slice his face off? i know that's a lot of questions but this it's a little silly.

if there is one real bad idea the writers could've done much better at coming out of the new 52 it would've been to have be at the absolute very least 8 or 9 years when they started out.

Posted by Suprman

@Smart_Dork_Dude: I do know exactly what you mean. Reeve will always be Superman and he captured Superman PERFECTLY. I will always hear Reeve's voice while reading Superman just like Kevin Conroy will always be the voice of Batman to me and I hear him every time I read Batman. Also no offense to Ledger's version of Joker but there's NO ONE who can capture the Joker's laugh like Mark Hamil, I'm 25 and that laugh STILL sends shivers up my spine.
