DC Comics Announces the Return of The Joker

It's the return of Batman's greatest nemesis!!

Who is the greatest comic book villain of all time? There's no doubting the ruthlessness and uncalculating way the Joker operates. When it comes to Batman villains, he clearly holds the top spot among them. He is the only character that has hit so close to Batman's home. He's already shot and crippled Batgirl and brutally killed Robin. Both may have gotten 'better' but the fact he managed and did so remains. Since the beginning of the "New 52," there really hasn't been much of the Joker seen, aside from his face. The big question on all of our minds is where will he turn up next?

Today DC has announced that the Joker will return in October's "Death in the Family" story arc and it will be in a "horrifying, unnerving and huge way."

Who will be responsible for bringing the Joker back? How about Scott Snyder, Greg Capullo and Jonathan Glapion in the pages of BATMAN? It seems it will be more than just Batman dealing with Joker. Batman will also have to fight to protect his secret identity along with those who fight alongside him.

== TEASER ==

We've heard Scott Snyder talk about his affection and fascination with Batman. How does he feel about Joker? Snyder shared a few words on DC's blog.

Joker is my favorite villain of all time. Not just in comics. In everything - film, books, TV. He's the greatest, hands down. So this story is something extremely important and personal to me - something I've been building in my head ever since I started working in Gotham. Basically, this is my big exploration of the Joker, my ARKHAM ASYLUM or THE KILLING JOKE, only bigger in scope. Bottom line: it's the biggest, baddest, most shocking Joker story I could tell. This is Joker completely unleashed. He has been away for a full year planning this revenge, watching, plotting, setting things up. And now he's back. He has his traps set, his knives sharpened... And wait 'til you see him. Greg's sketches literally gave me chills. Point blank: This is Joker like you've never seen him before. He has a mission. He has a secret. And he has a serious axe to grind with Batman. It isn't going to be pretty, but it's going to be a wild ride. Thanks for taking it with us.

Scott's not the only one excited. Here's what Greg Capullo had to say:

When Scott told me that he'd written a Joker story for our next arc, I couldn’t contain my excitement. Talk about a dream come true! For me, the Joker is the ultimate rogue and the villain I most wanted to draw. I gotta tell you, after hearing what the story is about, this isn't a dream come true. It's a nightmare! A macabre and bloody, flesh crawling nightmare. We hope you'll have the nerve to face what's coming. Warning: It ain't for the faint of heart!

If those words aren't enough to get you excited, I'm not sure why you're reading this news. As exciting as this is, there clearly is a reason to be a little scared. This isn't going to be a fun romp in the park for Batman. Snyder and Capullo already put Batman through the ringer with the Court of Owls. This sounds like it's going to be an encounter unlike any the two have had before.

The Joker makes his return on October 10 in Batman #13. Mark your calendar.

buuuuuuut i'm confused.

so, when his face got torn off that was one of the first run-ins with batman. however, it's still canon that he shot barbara and killed jason and did everything he usually did, when he super had a face.

but he...doesn't now? and batman never found him after that crappy villain the dollmaker helped slice his face off? i know that's a lot of questions but this it's a little silly.

if there is one real bad idea the writers could've done much better at coming out of the new 52 it would've been to have be at the absolute very least 8 or 9 years when they started out.

That wasn't one of his first meetings with him at all. I'm not sure where you got that from but the events in Batman, Detective Comics, etc are all happening around the same time in current continuity and Batman is an established superhero who has been around for over five years when those books started.

@Suprman: Yep. It's a rare thing when an actor just meshes with a character so well. Chistopher Reeve is Superman, RDJ is Iron Man, Hugh Jackman is Wolverine, and from what I can tell Andrew Garefield IS Spider-Man(A lot more so that Toby ever was). Just need to see the movie tomorrow to find out for sure(I'm to lazy for midnight showings).

YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSS

I'm sure this guys are going to do something amazingly awesome with he and Bats :D

Edited by abeyance

the joker is great and all but I'm ready for a new threat for bats. he's supposed to be cleaning up the world but keeps taking out the same old trash just in a different garbage bag. If they have an amazing concept give it to a new villain. Make a villain the opposite of joker like a mime or something lol.

Totally fangasmed all over the place here seeing this. I simply cannot find the words to express how excited I am for this. I just cannot.

@Tellumo: I'd leave Morrison off that list too. Just saying.

This makes me smile, so many fanbois didn't want capullo doing this book. Now they see what all of the rage is about! Capullo is the damn man!

Did I read correctly that the new storyline will be 'Death in the Family" ? Or was that a mistyping referring to the death of Jason todd storyline? Since each of the bat-family has their own book, I cant imagine Joker could kill off another bat-member

Was that a mistake on Comicvine's part? I thought it was "Death of the Family". That would make sense too -- maybe the family would break up in that sense. If not, it is a little weird.

Snyder DID say on Twitter that he mutilated a fan-favorite character in the first issue though.

A new threat? lol did you not read Night of the Owls? I think most people are tired of that and want to see one of Batman's rogues have a big story.

Good to see Snyder writing this Joker run. I think all the Bat titles offer something varied which is good for different readers. Although I personally dislike Grant Morrison's Batman I know that many people love his stuff. Awesome idea to keep Joker out of the New 52 till a year out, makes business sense.

Seriously Scott, just take all of our money. WB and DC, do NOT let this guy nor Capullo go. They make so much beautiful music together. And WB, pay anything to this guy to script a movie. Young Justice, Suicide Squad, whatever. JUST.DO.IT!

Posted by batman_begins

Oh, and if Court of Owls is only the "beginning" (Batman Begins!) as what Scott mentioned, then Death In The Family would be his TDK... And we all know how TDK was..

Honestly, the best is yet to come is what he tweets a whole lot of the time. Soooooo very excited. All hail!

I'm glad that this will be in the main Batman book and isn't just continuing in Detective Comics.

I'm really looking forward to this, especially the fact that he's been away for a year and Batman hasn't seen him for that long.

I like to thank Greg Capullo for giving me something to make a new wallpaper out of, Scott Snyder for doing a Joker storyline that prompted Capullo to design this teaser, and Tony Daniel for being the one who chopped Joker's face off in the first place.

Alright, each time I look at this picture.. it's still creepy as hell.

Well, colour me excited.

Though, I'm still waiting for Riddler. :P

Took me a couple seconds to figure out exactly what I was looking at in that teaser image. Why is it different than the one in the article thumbnail? I like that one a bit better than the one used in the article itself.

Posted by kagato

Couldnt be more excited about this, if anyone else had tried this i would have been worried but with Snyder behind the wheel i can rest assured that it will be cleaver, intelligently done and perhaps a little scary. After the Court of Owls i had no idea how he would follow up and top that arc, now i know ^_^

It's the same picture, but the thumbnail pic is an cropped version of the full teaser image :)

Scott sounds really excited. Now I'm excited, too.

So now he knows Batman's secret as well as all his bat-family and he's a skeemer now?

Posted by ishmaelbbc

He was talking about choosing the Joker (indirectly) weeks ago, so I don't see the big deal. Looking forward to it, though!

They have waited long enough. Time to bring Mr/ J back into the fold, and I am fully confident that Snyder is going to blow this sky high!

I am hoping though that I won't be reading Skinner Sweet as The Joker though.

This was playing in my head as I read the article

It seems like this tiltle is going from strength to strength, alhough I think it will do well to top the court of owls!

I'm super excited and can't wait for October! :)

As long as minor villains like Pyg and Harley stay out of the Joker-related arc, I'll be happy as a clam!

A good Joker is a solo Joker.

THIS is how you do a teaser poster. I approve of this. Also for some reason I'm hearing Mark Hamil's Joker Laugh.

Everything about this comment is wonderful.

unless you are going to say something intelligent, dont ever talk to me again. seriously. i've had enough of dc fanboys.

Please, think of me more as a very bitter and disappointed Marvel fan who's just telling the facts

Posted by KainScion

@Sekele: no. you were a marvel fan who jumped ship and has been hating ever since. and what did i tell you previously?

Posted by abeyance

@doordoor123: I did read Night of Owls and I thought it was okay. I meant a new threat as in primary nemesis. You know Lex Luthor/Zodd to Superman, Norman/DoctorOctopus to Spiderman, Leader/Ross to Hulk. They've been fighting the same old villains for decades. You get something different every so often then they reboot/retcon stuff to bring golden oldies back into the light.

I don't think there's a word to describe how excited I am! I love Snyder's writing so I'm interested to see his take on my favorite villain :D

Posted by TheThe

That picture is creepy. Looks like the mask of the killer in horror movies "SAW".

Posted by Necrotic_Lycanthrope

I'm seriously tempted to start picking up Snyder's Bat book now after seeing this promo.

I'm wondering what they plan to do for a "look" after the Dollmaker's remodel of his face.

A good Joker is a solo Joker.

I wouldn't say that; Joker definately deserves a good deal of solo stories being that he is so amazing on his own. Still, I wouldn't go as far as to say that he is only good when he's solo. I think some of his best appearances have been those where Harley has been by his side.

God, I would LOVE, and I mean LOVE, it if this teaser art ended up being the cover art for the starting issue of this arc.
