DC Comics Announces THE MOVEMENT and THE GREEN TEAM

DC's "The Edge" family is getting two new titles focusing on politics and social movement.

Yesterday we heard the news about several titles getting canceled. What's going to take their place? We don't know the full list yet but today, DC has announced on their blog the details for two new series joining The Edge family of books.

No Caption Provided

The two new series will each represent themes that came out of Occupy Wall Street. It's the 1% vs the 99%, in two separate titles.

On May 1, THE MOVEMENT will be a new series written by Gail Simone with art by Freddie Williams II. This is what Simone had to say over at Huffington Post:

THE MOVEMENT is an idea I've had for some time. It's a book about power -- who owns it, who uses it, who suffers from its abuse. As we increasingly move to an age where information is currency, you get these situations where a single viral video can cost a previously unassailable corporation billions, or can upset the power balance of entire governments. And because the sources of that information are so dispersed and nameless, it's nearly impossible to shut it all down.

The other series THE GREEN TEAM, is on sale May 22. The Eisner Award-winning team of Art Baltazar and Franco make their New 52 debut with artist Ig Guara.

Art Baltazar teased the following:

The real question is: Can money buy you anything in the DC universe? Would it make you powerful? Can it make you a hero? Can money make you…Super?

Franco added to this with the following statement:

If you had unlimited wealth, could you use that to make the lives of people better? Would you help your fellow man? Would you buy powers? You need to read this and find out.

We'll have to stay tuned to find out more.

Why should we waste money on this kind of titles when we know DC may not even give them a proper chance before giving it the boot? If it doesnt sell it obviously doesnt have a place in the New 52, and why risk falling in love with a series if it means such disappointment.

Honestly, the more DC cancels titles I like, the less hope I have that the ones replacing them will last, I'll check these out...but honestly, DC has left me jaded now.

So it is the Alan Grant Detective Comics run minus a writer who had spent ten year weaving politics into Judge Dredd. If Anarky shows up in any of these comics I will scream.

@Batnandez:I think 38 of the 52 are still going, but seeing as they've cancelled titles that weren't first wave, you could be right.

I read more info on this elsewhere and it sounds less like two different sides telling telling different messages as two different sides pushing the same message from different points of view. Unless I'm wrong.   Typical

I like them venturing into new grounds with such obscure revivals as the Green Team but titles like Ravagers and Sword of Sorcery could have been given a chance to shine. I seriously don't see these new green/red occupy books lasting long.

Sales almost never actually go up from the first issue. Because of that, 3-4 issues in and you can tell when a book just won't last/ Nothing could have saved those books at the rates they were selling.

In any case, Gail Simone alone will probably keep the red book going.

And the books that people actually want are:

Shazam!

Cyborg

Martian Manhunter

Atom

Zatanna

Not Vibe, Katana, Green Team, and the Movement.

Also, why is DC sticking with an arbitrary 52 titles when they clearly can't sustain it? So many of these books have no point in existing. I'm not a Marvel fanboy, but they seem to know how to manage titles better.

Something about this concept reminds me of something I tried to write a while back. I wrote a short story about basically hobos with super powers who had to fight super villains who were the upper crust of society. One of the good guys would like form weapons from the coins in his begging cup, like a whip or staff. Then he'd have to fight a villain who throws credit cards like Bullseye-style. As I tried writing more it felt a bit in poor taste. All I was doing was taking social class stereotypes and making ridiculous reasons for them to fight. This has me intrigued enough to check out these books.

The Occupy movement? Really? That's the latest bandwagon? Is that because a lot of the groups wear V masks (copyright: Big Bucks film studio...you know, the type you're protesting against, Occupy fans...) ;)

Like many of the people on here I'm disappointed that the new titles didn't get a chance to shine. In a world where half of the comics seem to be Bat or Supes related (yes I'm tweaking that up a little, yes they sell) it's disappointing that other comics are not given a chance. I like Sword and Sorcery, especially the Beowulf back-up story and I was interested in where they would take Stalker. And I'd just started to get into T7, what with them usining Eclipso and the hints that people like Majestic and Spartan are going to appear (two characters I'm curious about in the New 52 world.

I remember reading of the main Comicvine people suggesting that we should have another Bat title to explain what had happened in the New 52 past rather than 'rebooting obscure characters'. I remember hating that idea but that's still better than this. I'm pre-judging, and hats off if it's great, but I doubt it will be.

I guess that's why Marvel have started to draw me back. Sure they may have event, after event, after event (wait, not after, almost at the same time as!). New 52 still has a lot going for it but, just lately, its gone a bit off the boil for me.

Green Team sounds kind of interesting, but I don't know if I'll want to read it if it gets cancelled after only a few issues. The Movement sounds like more of that 99%/Occupy bulls###. Neither of these will last.

It seems to me like everyone is pissed off at DC for cancelling books like Sword and Sorcery(ostensibly because they didn't perform well in sales) and adding books like this because DC is just going to cancel them because they won't sell. Seems like a self fulfilling prophesy to me. Personally, I'm glad that DC is even trying weird and risky books like Sword and Sorcery or these two new books at all. It isn't their fault that they don't sell well. At the end of the day, they're a business and if a book isn't selling well, it makes sense that they'd want to cut it and replace it with something else.

Honestly, the creative teams on these books have me on board, and the concept intrigues me. I'll definitely have to add these to the pull next time I get to the shop.

Many people use comics as an escape from the harsh realities of the world. Rough times at home, school, financial woes, religion, and politics, are reasons children or teens may be introduced to comics . Could it be , Dc comics doesn't reconize this ,or will Batman be making appearances to help boost sales in these books as well. Actually it wouldn't matter, these titles are set up for epic fail, and someone please post the sales results, so we all can say I told you so!

These sound really interesting.

Anyway I think it's unfair when people say that DC decided to cancel such and such for whatever new books are coming out. Frankly, it's the readers (or rather the lack of readers) who decide to cancel a book. If they're not being read or bought then how is DC supposed to continue it? They have no reason to want to loose money on an unpopular series that isn't profitable. If those books were being supported by readers then they would not be canceled. And all comics publishers operate that way. It's the same thing with TV shows. They get canceled if the ratings aren't there, yet I only hear comics readers blaming the publishers as if the decision to cancel was made just to offend them. So stupid.

Now after talking a little time to read the post and the following comments I've come to this conclusion:

The ideas are good, especially if these 2 books are going to be interwoven with one and other: looking at one situation through the perspective of 2 different groups, with each group giving a coherent dialogue, be it action packed or not, that would allow the reader to understand the thinking on both sides of the fence and come up onto their own conclusion afterwards. Something that makes readers think, where situations aren't black and white. Though I do admit that this is just me imagining how such titles could work as the reality may be very different esspecially if these 2 titles aren't interwoven, which considering the idea of the 1% and the 99% they should, than neither will go anywhere as you'd not have the duality of the situation. And for 2 titles to be placed in "the edge" line I think it's great, as it also expands the ideas of what kind of future titles can fall into this line and not labelling it as "the intense blood and violence" line of books. Additionally the creative teams behind these books are good with Simone, the un-fireable, Herald of a large fan base that shall follow her every works, on "Movement" and the guys behind Tiny Titans on "green team" (though it does ask the question of the which tone the series will have?). Plus these cover images look darn fine (I'm a sucker for this kind of cover work).

Now the problem as I see are as thus: These titles are said to be inspired by the occupy wall street movement, which I admit don't know much about (sorry) but from what I gather basically comes down to 1% of people having a larger quantity of wealth than the 99% (.... like I said I don't know much), but if that's the case than I just have to say one thing. This isn't new. It's not recent. Sure the whole occupy movement appeared on the news recently (recently being used in the sense of not a few years ago) but the inequality between those who've had money and those who didn't has been going on for a VEEEEEEERY long time and both DC and Marvel have told stories about this topic (or similar ones) before. This is not new, it's simply DC cashing in on a event which occured recently (esspecially considering that most of the people wore the Guy Fawks masks that was worn by V in V for Vendeta. A property owned by DC) in hopes of being, and pardon my way of phrase here "down with the kids" and "topical" They've tried being topical before and it's resulted in poor result due to writers either having a baies to the message in which they're trying to tell (Amazons attack, Battle for Bludhaven = badly written metaphors for the Iraq war) so if this is comming off of the coat tails of the movement than there are going to be biases in the writing (despite how good these writers are). Secondly people are peeved at the idea that titles such as these replaced the 8 other titles cancelled recently (the 6 from yesterday and the 2 last month) and with the current speed at which titles are being cancelled us as readers aren't given time to get over some frustration over the cancellations and the creative teams remarks before having new series which, on first impression, we are not going to look at posetivley due to only just hearing about cancellations and having no closure with the other titles. Finally as a result of being a new titles (or in the case of The Green Team a n52 reimagination of a previous property), having a premise which isn't open or interesting to many readers, some of which who want escapism not reality, and which is set in the line of books of the DCNU which aren't at the forefront of some peoples mind these titles, unfortuanatly will not resceive a large audience and as a result shan't have a large number of sails.

Now as far as new series go I do hope that they do well and that an audiance does come to them (or at least, if their cancelled they end up becomming cult classics which urge DC to launch them again) but DC's unstable line with constant cancellations is making people lose hope, and will probably result in all that new 52 shine which finally (after many, many, many years of titles, story arks, and captain carrot) saw them overtake the House of ideas in sales disapear, allowing marvels sales from their NOW line to return them to the top.

This is 100% accurate. If you don't want to try it, that's fine. Others, however, do want to give something new a go. Comics are not 100% prats wearing their pants on the outside punching other prats into buildings. Some readers wants something a little bit different, mature or indeed intelligent. God forbid we be allowed to have something different instead of homogenized Batman and SELECTED CHARACTER OF THE WEEK spun into forty eight on-goings.
