DC Comics Announces THE MOVEMENT and THE GREEN TEAM

DC's "The Edge" family is getting two new titles focusing on politics and social movement.

Yesterday we heard the news about several titles getting canceled. What's going to take their place? We don't know the full list yet but today, DC has announced on their blog the details for two new series joining The Edge family of books.

No Caption Provided

The two new series will each represent themes that came out of Occupy Wall Street. It's the 1% vs the 99%, in two separate titles.

On May 1, THE MOVEMENT will be a new series written by Gail Simone with art by Freddie Williams II. This is what Simone had to say over at Huffington Post:

THE MOVEMENT is an idea I've had for some time. It's a book about power -- who owns it, who uses it, who suffers from its abuse. As we increasingly move to an age where information is currency, you get these situations where a single viral video can cost a previously unassailable corporation billions, or can upset the power balance of entire governments. And because the sources of that information are so dispersed and nameless, it's nearly impossible to shut it all down.

The other series THE GREEN TEAM, is on sale May 22. The Eisner Award-winning team of Art Baltazar and Franco make their New 52 debut with artist Ig Guara.

Art Baltazar teased the following:

The real question is: Can money buy you anything in the DC universe? Would it make you powerful? Can it make you a hero? Can money make you…Super?

Franco added to this with the following statement:

If you had unlimited wealth, could you use that to make the lives of people better? Would you help your fellow man? Would you buy powers? You need to read this and find out.

We'll have to stay tuned to find out more.

It seems to me like everyone is pissed off at DC for cancelling books like Sword and Sorcery(ostensibly because they didn't perform well in sales) and adding books like this because DC is just going to cancel them because they won't sell. Seems like a self fulfilling prophesy to me. Personally, I'm glad that DC is even trying weird and risky books like Sword and Sorcery or these two new books at all. It isn't their fault that they don't sell well. At the end of the day, they're a business and if a book isn't selling well, it makes sense that they'd want to cut it and replace it with something else.

Honestly, the creative teams on these books have me on board, and the concept intrigues me. I'll definitely have to add these to the pull next time I get to the shop.

That's not what I'm personally mad about, I'm upset that they're cancelling titles so soon, yes titles like Team 7 and Ravagers was a risky move, and I'm glad they even tried it, but these titles plus Sword of Sorcery aren't even at issue 10 yet and they're already announcing they've been cancelled. It seems like DC has just been doing a ''testing the waters'' plan for months now, instantly replacing any title that isn't doing well with a title that looks even more dubious instead of actually looking at WHY the title isn't doing well and trying to fix it.

Why should we waste money on this kind of titles when we know DC may not even give them a proper chance before giving it the boot? If it doesnt sell it obviously doesnt have a place in the New 52, and why risk falling in love with a series if it means such disappointment.

This is why these series' get cancelled. That mentality is too widespread.

This is 100% accurate. If you don't want to try it, that's fine. Others, however, do want to give something new a go. Comics are not 100% prats wearing their pants on the outside punching other prats into buildings. Some readers wants something a little bit different, mature or indeed intelligent. God forbid we be allowed to have something different instead of homogenized Batman and SELECTED CHARACTER OF THE WEEK spun into forty eight on-goings.

I think you must have missread what i wrote. If you read my comment again you'll probably see that I wasn't complaining over all the new non-cape books DC's been publishing. I've picked most of them up myself and they're excellent. What I was really saying is that DC hasn't given any of these books a proper chance. They've been canceled way too early to be able to find themselves a steady fanbase. Since we seem to agree on this I dont see why you're arguing.

The creative teams is what saves the concept... under Gail Simone, then it could be something thoughtful and entertaining.

If you told me it was Geoff Johns or Scott Lobdell or something... all the questions posed in the above promo would be settled by fighting, yelling, more fighting, some deus ex machina happenstance, more fighting, and more yelling.... that's after 3 or 5 issues of filler that goes nowhere.

I wonder how long of a rope DC will give these two titles to succeed? I'd much prefer a book run for a couple extra months than be cancelled prematurely but I'm also just a reader.

The Occupy movement? Really? That's the latest bandwagon? Is that because a lot of the groups wear V masks (copyright: Big Bucks film studio...you know, the type you're protesting against, Occupy fans...) ;)

Like many of the people on here I'm disappointed that the new titles didn't get a chance to shine. In a world where half of the comics seem to be Bat or Supes related (yes I'm tweaking that up a little, yes they sell) it's disappointing that other comics are not given a chance. I like Sword and Sorcery, especially the Beowulf back-up story and I was interested in where they would take Stalker. And I'd just started to get into T7, what with them usining Eclipso and the hints that people like Majestic and Spartan are going to appear (two characters I'm curious about in the New 52 world.

I remember reading of the main Comicvine people suggesting that we should have another Bat title to explain what had happened in the New 52 past rather than 'rebooting obscure characters'. I remember hating that idea but that's still better than this. I'm pre-judging, and hats off if it's great, but I doubt it will be.

I guess that's why Marvel have started to draw me back. Sure they may have event, after event, after event (wait, not after, almost at the same time as!). New 52 still has a lot going for it but, just lately, its gone a bit off the boil for me.

Ignorant comment. It isn't a "V" mask but a Guy Fawkes mask. And it was first used to support Anonymous. If you don't know what that is, then look it up.

New titles didn't get a chance to "shine" as you say because the sales were bad. It isn't going to shine if there is a big decrease in sales or no one is picking it up. Who cares if they shine if no one is picking it up? I,Vampire shined, but not enough people were picking it up. Essentially, it is the fault of people that do what they are doing with this book by reading solicitations and making a judgement based on the solicit, picture and creative team.

Here is the problem with that: creative teams can improve -- some writers are better on some stuff then they are on others. Dan Didio had a great OMAC book, but he is a terrible writer. He is also doing a heck of a job on Phantom Strangers, but again he is a terrible writer. Gail Simone has some really great books, but she also has some stale ones. Heck! I didn't even like James Robinson until the New 52 when he started kicking everything out of the ballpark! Creative team value can vary -- a lot.

Then there is the solicits and covers. Both don't tell the whole story. You can't read a solicit and see a picture and just assume you know everything about it. The cover from I,Vampire made it look like another Twilight spin-off, but it wasn't. It was gory and gritty with a ton of horror aspects. No one knew what to expect from that book until they read through the first issue. And people that read it loved it!

People that judge too early end up missing out on good books and it causes the rest of us to miss out on these good books. There is no reason to keep a book around if no one is enjoying it. They aren't enjoying it because they aren't making money and we are obviously not enjoying it enough because so few of us are actually reading it.

Now I'm not saying these books are going to be great, but they at least deserve a chance.

You can have fun with your stale Marvel comics. I'm going to keep buying quality comics. Quality always trumps solicits and covers.

=_= Something different is good, basing a book off that crock of a movement is ridiculous. Being someone who lived in the city at the time of occupy wall street thing, those people protesting were just mimicking others and were a mob(funny enough most people who worked in the financial district didn't notice them since they don't do all their business on wall street). That wasn't a movement, it was a kegger with weed.

I'm all for a book that isn't just random heroes or just a bat/supes book, I'd be for a noir book or something not so mainstream, but trying to milk a dead movement isn't a story that will last or be very interesting.  Also you can smell the political undertones these books will have that will obviously not be objective(it's never without bias, or a fair balance)
Why waste these creative teams' talent? Have them do something less straight forward in it's message and be you know...creative.

"Sword of Sorcery combines the politics, world building and intrigue of a certain incredibly popular, critically successfully HBO television series with the adventure and magic of Harry Potter and the action and whimsy of Avatar: The Last Airbender. Combine all that with the beautiful art of Justice League International’s Aaron Lopresti, and…well, don’t break your brain trying to imagine it. Just read it and you’ll see." This feels gross. First of all, congrats on keeping up with the times, DC, OWS lost relevance a year ago. Second of all, if you're gonna work socio-political themes in to your book, you better take it real damn seriously.

There's been 70 plus titles that DC has put out since their "reboot"... and all of the inconsistencies are hurting them badly!! All of these "trial and errors" they've conducted with new titles, new readers, old readers, and comic book characters has been a bumpy ride! A bit of a mess if you ask me. I'll give them props for not giving up, but then again I'd take those props away for cancelling series so abruptly that readers (old and new) get extremely angered by the lack of consistency!

I really think that these will be some good comics. Obviously the reason that they're apart of the edge group is because they're part of the more outside of the box ideas. With these writers I'm sure that after the first issue it's going to get a good following. Me, I'd like to get them, but my wallet's at its peak with some of the other books coming out.

So is the mentality of breathing to stay alive, yet it seems to be a good thing.

These books might have made it passed issue 5 when they were topical. Which was 5 years ago... Come on DC, is the best you can come up with? You have a HUGE stable of Golden Age heroes to play with for Prime's sake!

I don't think you got the intended point. They weren't upset about DC trying out different types of books, they're upset because whenever DC does try to release something different (I Vampire, Sword of Sorcery, Men of War, GI Combat, etc.), it gets cancelled. Their reasoning is: "What's the point of getting invested in something like this when you know it'll just be next up for the chopping block?"

And honestly, I can't blame them. While DC is a business and needs money to function, they need to realize that certain books aren't going to sell very well from the get-go. There's no point in giving these books a shot if they're just going to shut it down after a few issues.

As someone who was reading Ravagers, Sword of Sorcery, and Team 7, it saddens me they are getting cancelled. At the same time, however, I can guarantee you most of the people complaining they got cancelled so earlier didn't buy any of them. Guess what? You're part of the problem.

DC is a business first and unfortunately, they'll always favor their profits rather than the stories they tell. As long as they have a book like Batman or Justice League to sell well, all the other books get aside.

If DC was really serious about releasing a new number 1, knowing that it probably won't sell well in the long run, why can't they have them as mini series? They did that with Morrison's Animal Man in the 80s! It was supposed to be a 4 issue mini but strong sales turned it into an ongoing. It's just sad to see people get invested over brand new books with their favorite characters and have those books end in less than a year. Comic book limbo isn't fun.

Anyone else feel that these could be extremely biased?

I know Simone is a huge feminist, and I think that could make the book really interesting or annoying for people who don't agree with her.

If these books have balance and smart writing, there could be some hope

I can't help but feel that this'll get cancelled in a few months

Many people use comics as an escape from the harsh realities of the world. Rough times at home, school, financial woes, religion, and politics, are reasons children or teens may be introduced to comics . Could it be , Dc comics doesn't reconize this ,or will Batman be making appearances to help boost sales in these books as well. Actually it wouldn't matter, these titles are set up for epic fail, and someone please post the sales results, so we all can say I told you so!

They are melding our harsh realities into a superpowered comic. How isn't that some form of escape? Super hero activists!!! Come on that has to be a little interesting. I would imagine the Green Team to be a bunch of Tony Stark type individuals except without the smarts. They just pay people for their tech. At least it will give some sort of commentary on some of our national issues.

These sound really interesting.

Anyway I think it's unfair when people say that DC decided to cancel such and such for whatever new books are coming out. Frankly, it's the readers (or rather the lack of readers) who decide to cancel a book. If they're not being read or bought then how is DC supposed to continue it? They have no reason to want to loose money on an unpopular series that isn't profitable. If those books were being supported by readers then they would not be canceled. And all comics publishers operate that way. It's the same thing with TV shows. They get canceled if the ratings aren't there, yet I only hear comics readers blaming the publishers as if the decision to cancel was made just to offend them. So stupid.

This.

Well said

I'm glad that DC hasn't yet given in to the urge to replace cancelled titles with more Bat and Super books, which would sell regardless of quality. I'll give the Movement a shot.

For those complaining about DC is replacing cancelled books with more books "destined to be cancelled," that's entirely YOUR decision. If you keep buying crap like Red Lanterns and Supergirl while ignoring books that are actually good on the grounds that "they'll get cancelled eventually," don't complain when DC has 22 Batman titles,

These look intriguing and nice to see DC diving into this genre. I'll be picking these up and checking them out. That's really the only way to judge a book. I suppose I could use this space to speculate and complain about these titles before they're even released and pretend I know more about running DC than its employers, but it seems that's already been covered in detail.

My point is, despite who may or may not agree ,comics were used as an escape from harsh realities. Some are those realities consist of politics and wordly issues. You asked if I thought these titles were interesting at least a little, and forgive me but I'm gonna say no. Why? thats easy, my comics are my escape from that reality ,and I feel that titles like this are an invasion to my world and the innocent mind of children. I'm sorry if you don't agree. I have access to CNN and C-Span to pick up the latest on politics and other worldly issues. Children deserve the right to stay innocent without the influence of such comics being solicited to them. This allows them to remain pure without political influences. Dc's decision here is eronous at the least. Politics breeds hate and seperation among cultures, you know . Shame on Dc. By the way, this will fail, and make mines Marvel, which I'm primarily a fan of since day one anyway.

I find myself wondering if Gail is even going to mention the Rape Tents, or the Public Defecation. I have a sneaking suspicion "The Movement" is just about indoctrinating the young, inexperienced, and uninformed with a silly ideology.

Thankfully, that means it's gonna bomb bigtime. All hail Capitalism. Tough tamales Gail.

I personally can't wait to get the Red Team. I buy everything Gail Simon writes. I hope this does not mean she is leaving Bat girl.

I'd like to know who's going to be on the teams, if they're characters that we've been waiting to see I'm definitely on board. If they are new creations I might hold off

these comics are gonna suck so bad, it's gonna hurt.

admitedly, if this wasn't DC--if it was, like, a different, smaller publisher or something--I'd be intrigued. However, I'm too busy waiting on DC to reintroduce it's characters to worry about titles that, quite honestly, probably aren't gonna last.
