DC Cancels Four Books, Introduces New THRESHOLD Series

This January we'll see the end of some titles, and the beginning of a new one.

New York Comic Con was the platform that DC used to announce they would be launching their new Superman title with writer Scott Snyder and artist Jim Lee at the helm, but it seems they waited until after the show to dish the bad news. Earlier today DC unveiled their January solicitations, which is also our first clue into just what titles won't live to see an issue #18.

No Caption Provided

According to DC solicits, four of the publisher's lowest selling titles will be canceled following the release of their #16 issues which include: BLUE BEETLE, GRIFTER, FRANKENSTEIN: AGENT OF S.H.A.D.E. and LEGION LOST. Two of these four happen to be the lowest selling titles at DC comics (GRIFTER and BLUE BEETLE), but the other two titles rank slightly higher on the list. Clearly, the sales for each individual title does influence the decision of whether or not to cancel a series; but sometimes the decision isn't always solely about the money. It might also have something to do with the creative direction of the publisher.

Yet with the cancellation of these four titles, also comes the introduction of a new one: THRESHOLD #1 is a new series being launched by DC, spinning out of GREEN LANTERN: NEW GUARDIANS ANNUAL #1. The book which will be written by Keith Giffen and feature art from Tom Raney, will introduce a new Green Lantern as well as an array of "New 52 gallery of space heroes." The reveal of the new title came with release of DC's "The Edge" group solicits.

What do you think of these cancellations? Does THRESHOLD sound like a book you might want to pick up?

Thanks to GamerGeek360 for the tip on the new DC title!

@sethysquare: it is interesting, I wonder which DC thinks is a more valuable commodity - GLC or GLNG. I far prefer GLNG, in fact its one of my favourite titles. The cosmic teamup sounded all right before I read who was in it. I will probably still check out the series Threshold, but it doesn't sound as cool as it did before I knew. I am not sure why someone would think it is a good idea to bring back the Space Cabbie, I would rather see the return of Rex the Wonder Dog or the Lois Lane monthly if they are determined to bring something back from the 1960s.

Me too. I far prefer new guardians but the thing is GLC has been around for years. Its not likely going to ever really phase out.

I'm a little confused because according to the solicits we're going to see omega men and blue beetle but the initial line up didn't include them at all. So I'm hoping they'll be included inside.

I think its fun to have odd ball characters all meshed up together and I was really hoping for a cosmic team up for the longest time. I do hope we get to see Adam Strange though.

I'm suprised that Frankenstein and Blue Beetle are being cancelled, but i guess that the number of readers for blue beetle did decline during the first few issues due to it's difference from the original pre-52 series but i thought that it was increasing in number. But as for Frankenstein i thought that it was one of the (well not uber popular) but most wellrecived series. :(

As a legion fan im going to cry an epice darth vader "noooo" for it's cancellation, but really i saw from the beginning of the run that this series wasn't going to last for a long time because when you name a series "legion lost" they're bound to be found at some time.

As for Griffter.... I duno. Never read it. No idea how good/bad it is. so no opinion on that. Now as for the new series being announced, so far the 3 that have been announced (JLA, the Lee&Snyder Superman series and the threshold) sound really fun and so it would seem that DC is just taking my money again. :P

I'm going to miss Blue Beetle but it never found it's footing and he should never have left his home.
Grifter could have been a good book but was slapped with fail from the beginning.
I didn't even like the idea of Frankenstein and I'm glad to see it go.
Legion Lost I just don't care about them.

This "there cannot be more than 52 titles", combined with the constant changes in creative teams is so annoying, so stupid and so insulting to both readers and creators.

Had Moore's Swamp Thing been part of the New 52, he would have been canceled during the first wave or its creative team would have been replaced by Rob Liefeld.

Threshold sounds interesting. And with JLA that makes two. I wonder what the other replacements will be.

I think it's cool that DC tries to keep everything fresh but why do they have to cancel things so quickly? Not even a year and a half and they have cancelled so many titles already. It's not like anyone can afford all 52 titles so a few should be allowed to be lower sellers, right?

I was originally planning on waiting until a few of these books got further along to jump back in (like Frankenstein) if they had improved but they just keep getting swept under the rug, it doesn't give help enthusiasm for the new books either. I personally don't think this strategy can last forever, if anything I feel it discourages new readers.

@krspaceT: I thought the Superman title would be released later in the year but that's good if they're releasing it in early 2013. As for the Raven thing, I'm not too bothered about that. It'll be good for her fans though.

Please forgive me if I'm repeating what others have already said. TL:DR ;-)

Legion Lost was bound to end at some point. The team would have to, eventually, find a way back home.

Frankenstein was just DC's (almost carbon copy) version of Hellboy. I didn't think it would last as long as it has.

Blue Beetle? Well...As much as I'm okay with Jaime, I'm an old purist (yes, I know I'm a dying breed) and I prefer my Ted Kord.

Although I do collect all the N52 books, I was never a fan of any of the Wildstorm properties. So, I'm not going to miss Grifter.

Lastly, since Giffen really proved his chops writing Annihilation Wave, I think he'll do great on Threshold...as long as Didio leaves him alone...

@k4tzm4n: Team 7 will have to end eventually. The book's only purpose is to help fill in the 5-year gap. Only so many stories can be told during that length of time. :-)

@Faeye: I agree. I love that their putting out so much content and i am loving the enthusiasm thats going with it but the 4 third wave titles have only just been released and their already announcing the next cancellations. (hell, we haven't even finished the first wave of trade paper backs yet). The major titles of the 52 may be stable but the other titles havent been given such a chance as the cancelations come quickly and so there's no real oppertunity for them to slow down and pace through their stories. Im not against the idea of DC having only 52 ongoing titles connected to the main universe (no idea how national comics fits in though) but they could at least leave some breathing space between the launch dates of new titles and the cancellation dates of others. Money is scarce for most people and in my case i couldn't even add any of the thrid wave titles to my pull list (even though 2 of the titles interested me) because i was in the position of cutting down on my comic purchase as to save some money (you know for the trivial things, unlike comics, such as food, clothing, bills. You know that non important stuff.) :P

This is just about the last straw! Frankenstein Agent of S.H.A.D.E. is one of my top three favorite New 52 books! And it's get getting cancelled for what!? More generic team and mainstream superhero titles that I don't care about. And that's just the latest casualty: Mister Terrific, OMAC, Resurrection Man, Blackhawks, all unique titles that got the shaft because they didn't sell like Batman. I like Green Lantern, and Superman's ok, but is there really a need for 5 related books for every A-list character?

this wins the thread

Sad to see Frankenstein go, but Threshold honestly sounds rad as hell.

@TheMadMonkey: That's a good thing, isn't it? Good stories have an ending, stories that drag on forever usually end up becoming lame eventually.

All four titles come to an end in the same month. So why do so many readers assume that they won't roll out four NEW titles next month?? Maybe previously referred to projects or maybe a surprise or two as well??

I applaude DC giving new titles a chance but cutting the books that just aren't selling. Yep, I have lost a title or two that I really was enjoying but .... oh well.

I can't say that this news affects me much and I can see why these titles are being canceled as all 4 of them have fallen off my list already. I see a lot of people criticizing the cancellations but in reality these aren't the only books for non-mainstream characters. There are many other, better written ones like Dial H (One of my favorite titles) and Demon Knights and DC Universe Presents ect. And I am pretty sure that all the previous titles released in the last wave were non mainstream books like Phantom Stranger, Team 7, and Sword of Sorcery. And one of them was a new hero book all together with Talon, albeit born of the Bat.

Isn't Frankenstein in the JL dark? I wondering when legion lost was going to get cancelled. It seemed like the story was built in with an expiration date. Now hopefully we can look forward to seeing those characters in the regular legion of superheroes. Blue beetle could be put into the teen titans and grifter is also in team 7.

I think DC has a schedule, as Johns said in the beggining about a five year plan. I think each time they cancel something it makes the puzzle piece a better fit. It sucks the Titles get canceled but if it help DC grow then Im all for it. Most of the characters that have been canceled have lead into team books. And the Team books I believe will set up the stage for large events like the Trinity War. This is only the Second Year, So I cant wait to see what Year 5 will look like.

Voodoo and Grifter gone, there goes my hopes at a team-up type of book. Or maybe they will do just that relaunch with a daemonite book. Blue-beetle I can see being moved over to Ravagers or Teen Titans.

I have read both Hellboy and Frankenstein and I can tell you right away that these two comic books are nothing alike, both writing-wise and art-wise. Sure, they share a similar premise, but that's like saying that Marvel shouldn't have bothered with Thor because there's already a flying, super strong superhero with a red cape in the other company.

I was wondering why I wasn't more upset with Legion Lost getting cancelled, its a good point though since the team has been pretty determined to go back to the future after all, though to be fair at one point they could have just had a few of them decide they've come to love present day earth more then the future and stay (which might happen come LL 16, just saying)

Frankenstein should have been held off until after rot world, given how popular animal man and swamp thing have been im sure Frankie is gonna get a decent to big bump in sales for rotworld which could easily turn into new readers.

I'm shocked Firestorm survived another cut, someone at DC must be pulling for it hard. Its going in a fairly different direction now so I suppose it might improve from the "simpler" take on it, that and I was happy to hear Captain Atom being involved in the upcoming story arc, Unless there are huge plans for it Im assuming it will get cut for the 5th wave to make room for MOS comic (assuming it doesn't improve sales)

I think the more quirky books don't ever get a foot hold in the market. It's all good and well saying 'DC don't do enough to make sure a title sticks' blah blah. In the 'olden days' yeah, they did switch up creative teams - on titles that had previously sold well. If it always sold poorly, why bother? they're wasting money on something with no return.

I think there's a certain amount of rose tinting in this. I'm not happy about titles getting canned either - Frank was one of my pull list titles, along with Res man. But I can see most of the dark stuff getting deleted in favour of more Bats/JL stuff. Just sells better.

I'm sad that blue beetle is done for and so is frankie.....I'm glad that jeff will still have him around in Justice League Dark but beetle's fate is still unknown. Will he end up with the new teen titans book staring raven? what's going to happen with the whole reach thing? I don't think they can just leave them hanging like that after what happened in the blue lantern's planet. Oh well, wonder what tittles will replace them (Threshold doesn't interest me at all but JLA looks good).

Threshold sounds real neat. The only book out of the cancellations that I was reading was Legion Lost and I had actually dropped that just before zero month so meh... I'd like a Red Robin solo book, but tbh I don't want anymore Bat books until some of em are cancelled. I would frakking love a book focused on Savages daughter from Robinsons arc on DC presents though, or perhaps a John Stewart book, or even a Cyborg book, or a martian manhunter book.

yaa just what we need another bat title. (sarcasm)

Where is the Shazam solo book!? or The Outsiders! or give me another Green Lantern title, bring back emerald warriors! let Guy hav his own book again with a little squad, When Hal comes back to life put Hal with john in Green lantern corps, Baz for Green lantern, and Kyle will still have new guardians! perfect! i just did DC's job.
