DC Cancels Four Books, Introduces New THRESHOLD Series

This January we'll see the end of some titles, and the beginning of a new one.

New York Comic Con was the platform that DC used to announce they would be launching their new Superman title with writer Scott Snyder and artist Jim Lee at the helm, but it seems they waited until after the show to dish the bad news. Earlier today DC unveiled their January solicitations, which is also our first clue into just what titles won't live to see an issue #18.

According to DC solicits, four of the publisher's lowest selling titles will be canceled following the release of their #16 issues which include: BLUE BEETLE, GRIFTER, FRANKENSTEIN: AGENT OF S.H.A.D.E. and LEGION LOST. Two of these four happen to be the lowest selling titles at DC comics (GRIFTER and BLUE BEETLE), but the other two titles rank slightly higher on the list. Clearly, the sales for each individual title does influence the decision of whether or not to cancel a series; but sometimes the decision isn't always solely about the money. It might also have something to do with the creative direction of the publisher.

Yet with the cancellation of these four titles, also comes the introduction of a new one: THRESHOLD #1 is a new series being launched by DC, spinning out of GREEN LANTERN: NEW GUARDIANS ANNUAL #1. The book which will be written by Keith Giffen and feature art from Tom Raney, will introduce a new Green Lantern as well as an array of "New 52 gallery of space heroes." The reveal of the new title came with release of DC's "The Edge" group solicits.

What do you think of these cancellations? Does THRESHOLD sound like a book you might want to pick up?

Thanks to GamerGeek360 for the tip on the new DC title!

Grifter fans: fret not, he'll still appear in TEAM 7!

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! You stole my thunder!

Anyway, I have to say that this Fourth Wave seems to be the best one so far. I'll really miss Frankenstein, though.

Posted by timdrakerules

Frankenstein, I shall miss thee. Thou wert one of my favorite titles each month, and I shall mourn thy passing.

Lo, this may free up some lucre with which I may purchase Jason Aaron's Thor or Mark Waid's Hulk. Every cloud hath its silver lining.

Posted by therafalee

Well i was not following any of thoose, so to me no much diference. But is good to know that they have more in mind than just money, makes have great expectations for DC future.

I was thinking about picking up BB, cause he seemed interesting, w/e

@SmashBrawler: Hey Smash Im confused by your comment. Do you mean the Third Wave of new titles or the Fourth Wave canceled???

The Fourth Wave, which includes Threshold, JLA, the new Superman title, etc. I consider the first titles from the reboot the First Wave.

Posted by ccraft

What is threshold? Guys, lets not let Team 7 get cancelled!

Posted by Teerack

Damn I liked blue beetle. Really surprised Legion lost lasted this long though lol.

Posted by TitanTempest

I like all these titles. I know they will be doing something with Grifter. But what I really hope is they put Blue Beetle in another title, its sad he didnt get to keep his own, I like Blue Beetle. I also will miss Legion Lost, it was an unexpected title for me to like

A new cosmic comic book.

Posted by TitanTempest

@SmashBrawler: Gotcha, Yeah I love the Idea of them keeping only 52 titles but its also kind of sad to watch some of them go, but exciting for the new titles too

Posted by SmashBrawler

@TitanTempest: It's the way things are, really. I know I'll miss Frankenstein, but if I were DC I would have made the exact same thing if that meant I lost less money.

Threshold is replacing G.I. Combat which is ending in December hence its starting in January. With JLA coming out in February and replacing one of the 4 books ending in January, what other 3 books are going to be announced within the next month? Man of Steel isn't coming out until the "Fifth Wave" I believe.

Long Live Red Lanterns!!!

Posted by PrinceIMC

Another new Green Lantern? Oy. I think I'm dropping all three of the Green Lantern titles I'm currently picking up.

I am interested in Threshold. Shame we had to sacrifice Blue Beetle for it.

BRING ON MAN OF STEEL!

I've heard that GI Combat was being cancelled as well. Is that not so?

Posted by RazzaTazz

So Voodoo is saved from her own canceled series only to end up in Grifter which also gets canceled.  I wonder if she will show up in Threshold.  I will buy anything cosmic non-Legion and non-Guy Gardner related from DC though, so Threshold sounds good, but ... why iontroduce a new GL when Soranik Natu, Arisia, Sodam Yat and many others are not being used.

too bad about Frankenstein as well, i had been reading it but dropped it just because I had too many monthlies, not because it was all that bad.

With any luck, they'll announce a Red Robin solo book as one of the replacements.

Posted by t84nightfall

I actually don't mind this, I didn't really read those characters except for Blue Beetle, but he wasn't necessarily the top of my list every month. What I am wondering, is what will be the fourth title? So far we have: Justice League of America, this new Superman title, and now "Threshold".... What will be the new title coming to us. Any suggestions? I would love to hear them, please reply if you have any ideas, suggestions, or just general comments. I love hearing others ideas! :D

@blur1528: GI Combat is being canceled as well, but that was announced a while back.

Doesn't it strike anyone else at just how morbid it is that DC has series always lined up for the chopping block? It's almost as if it's something people look for to see what's getting canceled and what's coming into to replace it.

It makes me feel as if DC isn't putting much effort into trying to make series work. They're just looking for things to cut to put in new pet projects.

Posted by sora_thekey

I guess Man of Steel is replacing one of those... I wonder what the other two series are.

@ccraft: liked beetle up to New 52 and hung in there with Jaime for a while, but gave up my sub a few months ago. Basically, nothing happened for 8 issues and then it went in a very spacey direction, something i'm not into.

It's tough for these lesser-known books to gain any real momentum when all the big-name creatives are flocking to a third or fourth Batman/Superman series. And now we see that these books are being replaced with yet another Green Lantern tie-in. Meh.

Yes, it ends at issue 7 in December.

I'm wondering the same. I'm quite annoyed that Soranik Natu, Arisia, Sodam Yat, Kilowog, Tomar Re, Isamot Kol, Iolande, Stel and other great lanterns are not being used,

GLC has became a book solely on John Stewart and Guy Gardner. Bleh.

I'm getting that same vibe too.

Before the new 52, DC tried to make the series they had last as long as possible. They would switch writers, or tie it into a big crossover event and give it some kind of importance to the overall story of the crossover.....but now.....it seems like if something doesn't end up working, then they just can it and start a new series.

I'm beginning to see what Rob Liefeld meant when he said that pretty soon DC will consist of nothing but Batman books.

Man, I truly hope DC does something to help freshen the Young Justice line. It's easily the worst set of titles coming out of the New 52. Just mediocre all around. Put some talent in the line or something DC.

True.

Poor Beetle

Hmm... I'm guessing that JLA and the new Superman book will take up two of the slots, leaving one left for a new book. I wonder what it'll be...

man of steel is stated to be released in the 2nd quarter of the year so i dont think its february.

I've always liked Frankenstein. Shame to see him get canceled. But yet I never bought into any of the new 52 garbage. They should add him to the Justice League Dark team

Posted by RazzaTazz

I read one issue of Blue Beetle which was a crossover with GLNG and it seemed very much to be one those cases where an adult (the writer) tries to sound young and cool but fails miserably at it.

Dang Legion was getting decent after the culling too, and Frankenstein is just a shame that was a good title I think S.H.A.D.E had potential as an organization. Franky is gonna be in Dark maybe on a more permanent basis now (which would be good, they could use a tank) though Ray Palmer is getting kicked to the curb.

As for threshold I'll wait to see more I suppose I didn't even know there was going to be a new guardians annual, the new lantern better be an alien that's all I'm saying.

Posted by RazzaTazz
@sethysquare: Yes not so much interested in GLC, strange because it was one of my favourite pre new 52 titles.

Good thing I'm not reading any of those titles, Legion Lost always seemed more like a mini series than an ongoing anyway..and Threshold sounds...alright, just let's not have ANOTHER human GL

Posted by MisterKetch

I forgot about GI Combat, so we have 5 cancelled titles or did that magically get renewed at the 11th hour? it sounds like January is only going to have 51 monthlies if JSA starts in Feb.

Posted by zackattack529

Larfleeze is in it so yes i am picking it up!

Posted by Bruxae

Very excited to see what they do with superman.

@ME24601: I'd $#!+ myself if we got a Red Robin solo...

Posted by blur1528

@MisterKetch: 5 down, so we should be expecting 5 more. Threshold and Man of Steel. What about the other three? Will Brett Booth's solo book be a new one or an already ongoing?

Posted by judasnixon

Four DC books I'll buy;

1 Super Best Friends Forever VS. The Kardashians.

2 Doom Patrol with guest stars, the cast of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia.

3 Green Arrow- Green Lantern. Oliver Queen played by Jon Stewart, and Guy Gardner played by Bill O'reily.

4 The Erotic Fan Fiction of Jeff Lemire.

Don't forget about JLA! Also, I'm not sure if MOS counts since it's probably going to come out at the same time the movie does.

He's actually joining JLD. I'm wondering what will happen to Nina, Velcoro, Griffith and the rest, though?

Posted by blur1528

@SmashBrawler: GAH! I almost did! I'm excited to see Martian Manhunter and Green Arrow on that team

Posted by SoA

upset about grifter but understandable, the others was just a matter of time.

Posted by Xion

Kinda sucks that Blue Beetle and Frankenstein are being cancelled, really enjoyed those books!

Posted by BlackBloodedCrona

This is just about the last straw! Frankenstein Agent of S.H.A.D.E. is one of my top three favorite New 52 books! And it's get getting cancelled for what!? More generic team and mainstream superhero titles that I don't care about. And that's just the latest casualty: Mister Terrific, OMAC, Resurrection Man, Blackhawks, all unique titles that got the shaft because they didn't sell like Batman. I like Green Lantern, and Superman's ok, but is there really a need for 5 related books for every A-list character?
