DC Announces SECRET ORIGINS Series & BATMAN VS. BANE One-shot

DC is going to dive into more origin stories. Also, Batman and Bane are about to have "the grudge match of the year."

Despite having many origin-related issues in The New 52, there's still a lot of questions regarding the earlier years with some of the characters and of course there's much we haven't seen. DC is aiming to address that with a new ongoing series called SECRET ORIGINS. According to CBR, the upcoming book will chime in on the beginnings of some of DC's biggest heroes. The first issue will revolve around Superman, Supergirl and Dick Grayson. The writing team for that issue will be Greg Pak, Tony Bedard and Kyle Higgins. The creative team will apparently change from issue to issue.

Also announced is a Batman vs. Bane one-shot by Peter J. Tomasi and Scot Eaton. Titled FOREVER EVIL AFTERMATH: BATMAN VS. BANE, this issue is all about Batman returning to Gotham and finding out someone has taken his place as the Dark Knight: Bane. It's safe to assume their conflict will be solved in a not-so-peaceful manner. Anyway, here's an early look at the solicits.

I love the cover of Secret Origins. I am picking up that book. Plus Batman vs. Bane, HELL YEAH!!!!!!! Bane is one of my favorite Batman villains & having him duke it out with Batman should be freaking awesome. I wonder, is William Cobb getting along with Bane? If so, Batman and Nightwing (assuming Dick survives), vs Bane and William Cobb. I would pay money to see them duke it out.

Secret Origins as an ongoing at $4.99 is interesting. At that price point its sales are probably going to be less than great, especially since it has a changing creative team and characters. But, it is a cool idea. Plus, if it leads to a bunch of Lee Bermejo covers I'm all for it.

EDIT: I asked him on twitter and he says he's doing all of the covers for Secret Origins.

I like the idea of Secret Origins. I think it is somewhat necessary with so much being unknown in the New 52 but I find it kinda pointless that they are doing Superman. I was under the impression that Grant Morrison's Action Comics was supposed to be Superman's origin in the New 52...

I can certainly understand the line of reasoning that puts DC's flagship character in the first issue of this magazine, but, in all honesty, is there really anything left to say, to anyone, regarding Superman's origin?

Although these origin stories in the first issue are for characters who don't need it, I'm very glad indeed that DC are fleshing out the history and backstory of the New 52 DC Universe. That's absolutely a step in the right direction. Keep involving creators from their current series along with expanding on this new DCU is the way to go so kudos to DC for doing the right thing here.

Huh, so we just got finished seeing Superman's origins in Action and now were getting a book of nothing but origins?. Seem rather silly to me if the reboot was done right in the first place you would not need people to fork over 5 bucks to read or in this case reread an origin of a character.

I think this book will be a novelty title, Similar to A+X or DC presents.

@chalkshark: I think at this stage, the amount of Supes' early stories is nearly the same as his modern tales.

Interested to see Bruce and Bane face-off, although I have a feeling that the cover is a red herring and the two will mostly talk about Bane's actions during Forever Evil before Bane leaves making threats to return for a future story arc.

I totally agree the these characters do not need it. Though I wonder if that's because it's a first issue and they want to draw people in to further give this type of book a chance. This type of book is really a niche book and not one people would get continually. I'm hoping they involve lesser explored characters down the road.

The price might scare people away even if it has 49 pages. I'm kind of doubting it's going to survive. Maybe they should have made it an every other month book or something. Maybe cater more to a niche with different expectations.

Edit: I am happy they are doing this but I might have to settle for reading a friends copy.

As much as i like the idea of the secret origins series the price and characters that they are advertising for this first issue aren't exactly making do the whole Philip J Fry "Take all my money" thing. I get the idea of using your better known characters in the first issue to draw in readers, but haven't superman and Dick's "secret origins" already been told in the Issue Zeros? just seems kinda redundant; "come one come all to see the origins of superman.... again.... for the 12th time this year.......... NEW SERIES!!!"
As for the batman vs bane, love the covere but would i have had to read Arkham war to understand it (considering that it is the aftermath and all).
Now quickly reveal the cover of Aquaman and the others!!!

Superman, Supergirl and... Dick Greyson? So they arnt calling him Nightwing interesting this does take place after Forever Evil so maybe they are using this to flesh out what ever the hell he will be doing after the event.

As for Batman vs BatBane i will pick it up should at least be an interesting battle hopefuly it wll make up for the lame ass battle they had in The Dark Knight 6-7

My primary thoughts here were: did they just kinda spoil the ending of Arkham War and I guess this probably means Dick Grayson will survive because why run an origin story after a character is gone.

You're probably right there, draw in more sales with bigger name characters then branch out later on. And it is something to just dip into occasionally given the variety of characters they seem to be exploring. Still, this is a book DC does need to make given the fresh start they've given themselves.

True but that way you get more bang for your buck so to speak. More content for the increased price might be a worthwhile risk. Of course I use 'might' tentatively.

@dstick88: I can speculate that maybe DC isn't satisfied with what Morrison did with Superman's origin and they'll use this as a retcon. It wouldn't be the first time that Morrison established something that was later completely ignored. Another possibility is that they are using the term "origin" lately in this instance and they'll tell an early career Superman story while leaving Morrison's stories alone.
