DC Announces ROBIN RISES: OMEGA One-Shot

What will this mean for the future of Batman and Robin?

The BATMAN AND ROBIN series has continued despite the death of Damian Wayne. Instead of Robin, we've seen rotating guest starts team up with Batman. Lately, Batman's been on the hunt for his son's body after Ra's al Ghul took them.

Today's it's been officially announced that ROBIN RISES: OMEGA is coming from Peter Tomasi and Andy Kubert. This follows the events of the "Hunt for Robin" story and is on sale July 16.

No Caption Provided

DC also revealed to the LA Times' Hero Complex that the following week, we'll see the return of BATMAN AND ROBIN with issue #33.

Does this mean the return of Damian? In the interview, Tomasi said the following:

Let’s just say that we are most definitely bringing back a Robin for Batman’s 75th anniversary. Batman needs a Robin and Robin needs a Batman, so what more needs to be said except that “Robin Rises: Omega,” drawn by the stupendous Andy Kubert, starts and ends with a bang and everything that occurs in this epic story all has seeds that Pat Gleason and I planted back during our first arc in “Batman and Robin: Born To Kill.”

It's not clear whether or not Damian is returning. Tomasi was very coy about that. But of course you wouldn't expect them to necessarily straight out tell us. We'll have to wait and see.

What do you think, Damian or another Robin?

I was kinda hoping DC would actually let someone die and just be… you know dead. Maybe they get ahold of one of his many clones form the end of Batman Inc. That's a nice cover however.

Damian returning would be a dream come true. And the fact that the Son of Batman movie comes out a few months before this arc may foreshadow Damian's return.

...But my gut tells me that Carrie Kelly, Harper Row, or Stephanie Brown will be our Robin. Most likely Carrie Kelly, being that Harper is intended to become Bluebird, and Steph to become Spoiler.

Still, we can dream. Damian!

That cover really does look like the Thomas Wayne Batman, what with the wrinkly face and red symbol.

I like the Damian character. If the story is good I'll gladly welcome him back. But we know most resurrection stories are iffy.

As much as I really really liked Damian I don't think he should come back.

Wrinkly face, glowing eyes, the word "Omega", it looks like Darkseid might be involved somehow...

I'd prefer Dick Grayson, Tim Drake, Duke Thompson, or Carrie Kelly as Robin. -_-

I'm sorry, everybody. I just don't have any more faith in the New 52 or any of these events at this point. I feel like everything has been really forced recently.

  • Dick coming back and being a secret agent? I don't know.
  • Batman needs Robin? Come on.
  • The line-up changes of the future in Eternal? It's cool, but not necessary.

These books have such a short life expectancy now that it makes all of the radical changes for each arc and new book way down on me more and more. I just want them to concentrate on the existing stuff by taking it easy.

hmm, might have to give the new story a shot. I quite liked Born to Kill, but have found everything since to be a mess.

First: if Damian is really coming back, I think is great that the writer that made us all love the character is the one making this story.

Second: In the interview Tomasi did, it explains the involvement of Apokolips and Darkseid with the story, hence the cover.

Third: it's DamiAn!!

Batman and Robin is my second favorite Batbook, so I'm obviously buying this!

Look at Batman's mouth, now back at me. Look at Batman's eyes, now back at me. Look at the word "Omega", now back at me. My point is: Does anyone other than myself see a hint of Darkseid being involved here? Omega Beam-like eyes, grotesque mouth, the word "Omega". I mean...c'mon. I do hope Damien comes back, though. Gone to soon.

Over at the Newsarama (I think) article, mentions that there's Apokoliptian technology involved, the "Chaos Shard". So yeah, I'd agree with your guestimate.

Will Damian return? Will another past Robin return to the role? Or will someone new take up the mantle?

I guess we're gonna find out.

Batman certainly does not need a Robin, Pete Tomasi. At this stage, Batman obtaining yet another child to be a meat-shield is bordering on the absurd.

Good news I guess, I'd really rather they bring back Damian though and not introduce another stupid character into the robin role

and for the love of god keep Carrie Kelly away from the robin mantle

I'm all for Damian coming back, there is a lot of untapped potential for his character, he was barely around long enough to grow.

Seems like its the trend for characters that "die" to come back after a year anyway.

I hope Damian is coming back. I have missed him every day that he has been gone. I love that little snot. I know some would be annoyed that his death didn't last long but they built in his return as soon as he was gone. It makes sense that he'd return quicker than some. I also think that bringing him back wouldn't diminish his death because it felt very much unnecessary when it happened. This is like rectifying a mistake. At least in my opinion. I love Grant Morrison but I felt like the end of Batman Inc was a rare misstep for him.

Who would they bring back instead of Damian? He's only been dead for a year give or take a few months. I do miss the little brat but it's too soon to bring him back, especially since Morrison got to do his own story ending Damian's life in a stunning way. And I have no idea why Apokolips is getting involved in this Bat event. Is this just adding fuel to the Bat God fire? Still I am interested in the premise thus far.

@hushofthewind: Tim got plenty of push pre-New 52 but I agree that he has been handled embarrassingly since the reboot. I think part of the problem is that he hasn't gotten to do his own thing so far. He has been a member of a Teen Titans team that has so far been exclusively handled by one of the worst writers in comics today. I also don't like the name Red Robin. It is a popular burger restaurant chain, not a hero name.

@themightymazahs: I actually agree with you but in the grand scheme of thing its all uneccary. There is no need for Dick to be a superspy or for Harper row to be blue bird or Carrie Kelly appear. I can just see DC going this route even if I do not agree with it.

I like the idea of Damian coming back. It would be like when Jason Todd came back only this time we could see how different the results would be if Batman had actually been there for his resurrection. If it's not damian, please let it be someone new. I don't like Carrie Kelly and harper row just doesn't seem to fit. And I've never been a stephanie brown fan. Maybe give us Cassandra?

That's exactly what I was thinking. I'd be slightly aghast if the other members of the Bat family and Justice League just let him take on another ward to fight crime. That's not just negligence; it's manslaughter. I wonder if someone can bring legal action against Batman considering that Batman Inc IS a legal entity.

Wait, whether or not Batman needs a Robin is still up for debate?

The point has been made about a million times that Batman needs a Robin to keep him sane. Well, the Batman version of sane, anyway.

Seriously, what the hell? I feel like half of the comic "fans" online only live to complain about books or ideas being stupid or bad using the same whiny arguments that they have for decades. Why even bother?

@hushofthewind: Oh please Tim was Robin for like 20 years he got PLENTY of push. If you should feel bad for anyone feel bad for Damian. He was only Robin for like 4 years before being killed and never even go this own series even though he was arguably the best Robin of all time.

@themightymazahs: @mrjoshua327: @saoakden: Yes. The articles on the DC Comics website and a few others mention Darkseid's involvement. It appears Bruce goes to Apokalips to steal something to resurrect Damian.

@captain13: Who the heck is Duke Thompson?

@nahuel: Did you just not like Morrison's run, or have you not read any of it. Because Morrison wrote Damian much longer than Tomasi, through several different titles.

@tdk_1997: Gleason is the artist. Tomasi is the writer.
