DC Announces New 52 Valentine's Day Special

Because everyone wants more love in their comics.

Many think that comic books are mainly about superhero action. Clearly that isn't the case. Comics are full of love and romance. I even wrote an article about it a year ago. DC Comics realizes that readers do enjoy the romance (and complications) in comic books (look at all the talk about Superman and Wonder Woman sharing a kiss).

Today, DC has announced more love in comics coming your way. On February 6 (just in time for Valentine's Day), YOUNG ROMANCE: A NEW 52 VALENTINE’S DAY SPECIAL #1 will be headed to a comic shop near you.

No Caption Provided
Featuring characters such as Wonder Woman, Superman, Batgirl, Catwoman, Batwoman, Aquaman, Mera, Apollo, Midnighter, and Dick Grayson, YOUNG ROMANCE: A NEW 52 VALENTINE’S DAY SPECIAL #1 will also include perforated Valentine’s Day cards featuring the stars of its stories.

The anthology will feature stories by Andy Diggle, Ann Nocenti, Cecil Castellucci, Peter Milligan and Lauren Beukes, and art by Gene Ha, Emanuella Luppichinno, Phil Jimenez, Sanford Green and more.

It might be easy to dismiss this as a bunch of lovey-dovey hogwash (does anyone use 'hogwash' anymore?), but when you look at the creators involved, you know there will be some good stuff here. Plus, it's love. Love is all you need, right?

No word on the price. For 64 pages, I imagine it'd be priced less than the recent Vertigo comic GHOSTS, that had a cover price of $7.99 for 80 pages. But with that cover by Kenneth Rocafort, I imagine people will want to pick this up. Plus, everyone enjoys love in their comics. They just might not want to admit it.

i would love this cover if they werent making out. hovering victoriously with superman giving wonder woman a back hug would have been better. this feels, slutty for lack of a better word. they are forcing this pairing a little two hard. wonder woman herself said she doesnt even know what the kiss meant and doesnt have time to focus on it. i would like to see black canary and green arrow reunite (meet for the first time here in the new 52) and nightwing and batgirl get back together as well

...This :) . If u dont like, to quote Deadpool - DEAL WITH IT!!! :/

@Shotgun How on Earth is she objectifying Supes? More like Wonder Woman is the one getting objectified here. Or am I blind and its actually Superman's ass and breasts sticking out in the air.

Well, it's the empowered fans who kicked a stink about her getting pants. You wear a swimsuit yes your butt will show. Supes can take off his shirt and stick his ass in the air for Wondy if he wants. I won't be bothered. Hell Superman is showing his packet in the upcoming MOS. The Amazon has a fine posterior and was never flat chested. Your problem dude to take offense at what is actually a nice piece of art (no differnt to many other covers of people kising I have seen) showing the two no doubt succumbing to Eros...It is Valentine's Day.

If you can find the quote I'll eat my words. I tried to google it just now and the most I can come up with is Geoff Johns saying "This is the new status quo," which seems like a pretty ambiguous statement. My point was that, yes DC may have done it to shake things up, but they didn't come out and start calling them the new power couple of comics. Other opinion writers may be calling them that, but DC has basically just written it and let the Fan community explode over it.

(high) I hate the fact that I'm really curious about this.

But im sorry but i just looked at that and it looks like a lot of crap lol

Yet, if one self is curious such a way that someone tells you to smell something that you know is going to stink, but you do it anyway because you want to know how bad, then I could see how you might be. If these two were from a different universe compared the old universe, then maybe then, they can have each other. otherwise, I'll pass.

@MonkeyToe:

Talking about a "kiss" is not a substitute for a relationship. DC tries and play the two off as a "power couple", but they are playing no part in each others' personal lives. That's what being in a relationship is about. It's the equivalent of kissing a coworker, but you never see each other outside of work.

But again... they're NOT in a relationship. It was one kiss, a single moment and nothing more. It's like a kiss at the end of a first date. You don't know if it's serious yet or even if there will be a second date, but there is enough chemistry to try the waters. Wonder Woman and Superman haven't even been on a date, they kissed seeking comfort from someone they considered an equal, someone who wouldn't get hurt the way they had hurt the people closest to them before. It was nice, which is exactly what the both of them said in Justice League.

As for DC making them out to be a... "Power Couple", that is based on your opinion too I believe. Yes, there has been a lot of publicity around the kiss but that is because, as far as I know and granted I am a new reader to the New 52, it has never happened in the regular DC universe? Is that right. I know there had been one-shots and what-ifs surrounding the possibility, but as far as I know the too were never an item in an on-going title. I think it's unfair for the community to claim that this was strictly for publicity and strictly to sell more comics for a title that has been consistently at the top of the charts week in and week out. Was it meant to have some shock value? Of course! But then writers should ALWAYS be trying new things otherwise stories become predictable, boring, and stale.

And finally, as I said, it was a spur of the moment kiss. There was a spark where two friends/acquaintances realize they have more in common than they realized and it lead to one single moment. To claim there is anymore to it is crazy and it is not implied anywhere in the books. You don't have to know someone outside of work to kiss, you don't have to be best friends to slip into an embrace, as I said before, people kiss (sometimes even more) on first dates all the time and that doesn't mean they call that person the very next day and suddenly start spending all their free time (if they have ANY free time as super-heroes) together. Not to mention that Superman probably shouldn't show up in WW comics because of his weakness to Magic, he could be severely vulnerable around the gods.

Meh. Romance in comic books or comic movies is boring.I cant stand it. It's often unecessary and slows the storylines with bubbly art on cheesy dialogues/monologues.

@FoxxFireArt: Diana is slated to appear in the Superman comic, which realistically is the only other title outside of JL they could both appear in (this special non-withstanding), what with AC occurring before JL 12 and WW's title is pretty much isolated from the rest of the DCNU. I don't see how an appearance in a handful of comics is considered 'milking it for all it's worth'... its not like it's some company wide event like AVX or Flashpoint.

The Batgirl and Nightwing plots seem unnecessary, like just filler. We could find any other characters to put. Instead of just going with 4 Batman characters by default. At least Dick is with an actual character, even if the pairing is completely random seeing everyone else he has been with.

I don't see the point of pairing Barbara with a random dude, let alone outside of her title, just seems like an excuse to print some extra pages.

@queenfrost_: I'm with Scarlett on this. Which holiday issues published by DC/Marvel are specifically referring to (a la publication dates and issue numbers) where there's a major discrepancy between whom is featured? I'm not going to interject so far as to say that there's no precedent for gender-role assumption within the comics community. I just don't understand the immediate ire over the Valentine's issue potentially including those with xx in their chromosome.

@ScarlettLynn said:

I mean, maybe you'd prefer the entire issue to be the guys in the DCU talking about women over a few drinks at a bar and all the women off panel. Myself? I actually like to see the female characters I enjoy be depicted on the page.

If you read anything by Zenescope, the women are at the forefront (in non traditional female roles of comic persuasion) in their holiday specials (even if the covers are cheesecake...and heavily so). Point is - I can't think of seeing any real consistent holiday issue special out of DC for the time I've been reading. And I'm getting old, ma'am.

@queenfrost_: No, actually. I don't get it. I mean, I'd love to read an all-male romance issue where the Supes & Bats finally admit their true feelings to each other but that seems unlikely to be published. So, until then there's probably going to be some women in an issue that involves romantic pairings and relationships.

I mean, maybe you'd prefer the entire issue to be the guys in the DCU talking about women over a few drinks at a bar and all the women off panel. Myself? I actually like to see the female characters I enjoy be depicted on the page.

I can't take the Superman and Wonder Woman relationship at all seriously, and I see it as little more than a tabloid DC created for press attention. It's evident in that they are only a couple in one comic series, and don't seem to appear in the other person's individual comic. I'm becoming more and more intrigued with how long DC can continue miking this fake relationship until it completely runs dry. So far, they're milking it for all it's worth.

That's a lot of opinion based on, by my count, 4 comics. Also by my count, 3 of the 4 titles have at least mentioned 'the kiss'. The only title that didn't mention the kiss has been the WW title which basically seems to be devoid of any contact with the rest of the DC universe. I don't even think they have mentioned Steve Trevor in the stand along WW title.

As far as taking them seriously 'as a couple', no one expects you too. The last Justice League comic went as far as to say that it was a kiss, not a proposal for marriage. That's it. Honestly, fans are the ones making a big deal out of it, not the writers.
