DC Announces New 52 Valentine's Day Special

Because everyone wants more love in their comics.

Many think that comic books are mainly about superhero action. Clearly that isn't the case. Comics are full of love and romance. I even wrote an article about it a year ago. DC Comics realizes that readers do enjoy the romance (and complications) in comic books (look at all the talk about Superman and Wonder Woman sharing a kiss).

Today, DC has announced more love in comics coming your way. On February 6 (just in time for Valentine's Day), YOUNG ROMANCE: A NEW 52 VALENTINE’S DAY SPECIAL #1 will be headed to a comic shop near you.

No Caption Provided
Featuring characters such as Wonder Woman, Superman, Batgirl, Catwoman, Batwoman, Aquaman, Mera, Apollo, Midnighter, and Dick Grayson, YOUNG ROMANCE: A NEW 52 VALENTINE’S DAY SPECIAL #1 will also include perforated Valentine’s Day cards featuring the stars of its stories.

The anthology will feature stories by Andy Diggle, Ann Nocenti, Cecil Castellucci, Peter Milligan and Lauren Beukes, and art by Gene Ha, Emanuella Luppichinno, Phil Jimenez, Sanford Green and more.

It might be easy to dismiss this as a bunch of lovey-dovey hogwash (does anyone use 'hogwash' anymore?), but when you look at the creators involved, you know there will be some good stuff here. Plus, it's love. Love is all you need, right?

No word on the price. For 64 pages, I imagine it'd be priced less than the recent Vertigo comic GHOSTS, that had a cover price of $7.99 for 80 pages. But with that cover by Kenneth Rocafort, I imagine people will want to pick this up. Plus, everyone enjoys love in their comics. They just might not want to admit it.

Really? I mean it sounds great, I am just surprised that they are reviving their Young Romance title, which was one of their more popular romance era titles, but hasn't been seen in 40 years .

Rocafort, you amazing bastard, im so glad he is getting the respect he deserves :)

as for the title, im actually very interested. It would be nice to see some DickxBabs love, or at least a glimpse to a DickxKori relationship. as for the other couples, eh id rather stick with the Bat-family's two heart-struck heroes :PPPP

@RazzaTazz: Keeping up the copyright or something, maybe? Not that I have any clue how that works or if they need to but it seems like they've been breaking out a lot of the not-seen-in-decades-and-decades title names for a while now.

@ScarlettLynn: Could be, though I think they still have rights to anything published in the past 50 years. Still copyright for this is debatable seeing as it has no name recognition.

@wessaari: I actually hope it's Dick & Sonia that are featured. They're the ones dancing around the edges of possibly having a relationship and I've really enjoyed what they've done with the two of them so far.

@SandMan_: In the mid 50s to late 60s superhero comics were not very popular at all, and only a few of the regulars persisted through that time frame (for instance why Captain America stopped being published.) In the interim other genres like romance kept the industry alive.

@SandMan_: DC had about 6 regular romance titles at one point, mostly all along the same lines of content. I think Heart Throbs was the most popular.

@SandMan_: It was some of the typical "men writing for women" kind of storylines, pretty weird most of the time.

@RazzaTazz: I'm not really surprised. It seems DC wants to try reviving a lot of the older non Superhero stuff.
War Comics, Horror, Monster, and wouldn't be surprised if they looked into other places.

This cover would have been far more memorable if they'd reversed the pose so WW had Superman bent over and was kissing him.

@Dernman: It would be interesting if they revived stuff in the actual genre though while still making it contemporary and part of the universe.

So true. Frankly though I think it'd be sweet to introduce a love interest for Batman not named Selina. Rachel Dawes anyone? Keep her around for 2-3 years so we all grow to care about her, then let the Joker have his way with her. I'm really surprised there's no Gwen Stacey story in all of Batman's comics. More tragedy, more win, etc.

Also LOL at DC giving a valentine's book to majority females. Because that's all women in comics care about...which man they need to fill their life.

@SandMan_: Archie is the last romance comic standing, but mostly because it always had a comedic aspect as opposed to straight up "lover's lament." The romance in Archie is always predictable anyway, and neither Betty nor Veronica cry for days over anything that Archie does to them.

Comics may seem to like making couples in comics, but they also seem incapable of writing a relationship. They put people together then write nothing for them.

I can't take the Superman and Wonder Woman relationship at all seriously, and I see it as little more than a tabloid DC created for press attention. It's evident in that they are only a couple in one comic series, and don't seem to appear in the other person's individual comic. I'm becoming more and more intrigued with how long DC can continue miking this fake relationship until it completely runs dry. So far, they're milking it for all it's worth.
