When a film production company manages to create a series of movies that go on to be as commercially successful as Christopher Nolan's Batman movies, they will likely do whatever it takes to find the formula for that success and recreate it. And if you can't get Nolan on as the director of your next franchise, the least you can do is get the man to be your Executive Producer. Such is the case with Zack Snyder's Man Of Steel movie. Not only has Warner Brothers brought Nolan on as the Producer to the upcoming film, but it seems they are set to have him implement a little bit of his magic and vision to the Man of Steel. So how involved is Nolan in the production of this movie, really? Well, based on the latest interview with Man of Steel and The Dark Knight screenwriter, David Goyer, a lot.
What Christopher Nolan and I have done with Superman is trying to bring the same naturalistic approach that we used adopted for the Batman trilogy. We always had a naturalistic approach, we want out stories to be rooted in reality, like they could happen in the same world we live in.
This is something we've really seen of Man Of Steel, already. The images of a young boy in a red cape playing in his backyard, running near the clothesline and newly clean bed linens. Then the figure of a much older Superman, a fisherman on a boat. The gritty, dirty image of the man in the midst of a storm. We've already seen a lot of "realness." Even the costume is a little bit darker (the color scheme) and texturized. It's harder and more real, unlike the spandex we saw in the previous Superman movies. Yet, just because the film is going to be a little bit grittier and more "real," doesn't mean they will make Superman a "darker" character, according to Goyer.
== TEASER ==It's not that easy with Superman, and actually this doesn't necessarily mean we will make a dark movie. But working on this reboot we are thinking about what would happen if a story like this one actually happened. How would people react to this? What impact would have the presence of Superman in the real world? What I really like to do is writing "genre" stories without a cartoonish element.
Does Superman need to be campy and cartoonish? Can he be real and grounded without being dark? It's definitely a fine line these creators have to walk when making this movie and it's one that will likely prove to be more challenging. It will be interesting to see whether Snyder, Goyer and Christopher Nolan manage to maintain the essence of Superman; making him grounded and relateable without sacrificing elements of what make who he is.
