David Goyer: 'Man of Steel' Won't Necessarily Be "Darker"

The film's screenwriter gives fans some insight into the overall tone and vision for Warner Brother's upcoming Superman movie.

When a film production company manages to create a series of movies that go on to be as commercially successful as Christopher Nolan's Batman movies, they will likely do whatever it takes to find the formula for that success and recreate it. And if you can't get Nolan on as the director of your next franchise, the least you can do is get the man to be your Executive Producer. Such is the case with Zack Snyder's Man Of Steel movie. Not only has Warner Brothers brought Nolan on as the Producer to the upcoming film, but it seems they are set to have him implement a little bit of his magic and vision to the Man of Steel. So how involved is Nolan in the production of this movie, really? Well, based on the latest interview with Man of Steel and The Dark Knight screenwriter, David Goyer, a lot.

No Caption Provided

What Christopher Nolan and I have done with Superman is trying to bring the same naturalistic approach that we used adopted for the Batman trilogy. We always had a naturalistic approach, we want out stories to be rooted in reality, like they could happen in the same world we live in.

This is something we've really seen of Man Of Steel, already. The images of a young boy in a red cape playing in his backyard, running near the clothesline and newly clean bed linens. Then the figure of a much older Superman, a fisherman on a boat. The gritty, dirty image of the man in the midst of a storm. We've already seen a lot of "realness." Even the costume is a little bit darker (the color scheme) and texturized. It's harder and more real, unlike the spandex we saw in the previous Superman movies. Yet, just because the film is going to be a little bit grittier and more "real," doesn't mean they will make Superman a "darker" character, according to Goyer.

== TEASER ==

It's not that easy with Superman, and actually this doesn't necessarily mean we will make a dark movie. But working on this reboot we are thinking about what would happen if a story like this one actually happened. How would people react to this? What impact would have the presence of Superman in the real world? What I really like to do is writing "genre" stories without a cartoonish element.

Does Superman need to be campy and cartoonish? Can he be real and grounded without being dark? It's definitely a fine line these creators have to walk when making this movie and it's one that will likely prove to be more challenging. It will be interesting to see whether Snyder, Goyer and Christopher Nolan manage to maintain the essence of Superman; making him grounded and relateable without sacrificing elements of what make who he is. What do you think of the images and clips we've seen of the film so far? Do you trust that the people behind this movie will make a Superman film without changing who he is, or do you still have your doubts?

Man of Steel is directed by Zack Snyder and stars Henry Cavill as Clark Kent/Superman, Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Kevin Kostner as Jonathan Kent, Russell Crow as Jor-El, Michael Shannon as General Zod and Diane Lane as Martha Kent. The film is written by David Goyer (screenwriter for the Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy) and is being produced by Christopher Nolan. The film is scheduled to hit theaters on June 14th, 2013.

It will be unfortunate if it's not darker, because that was pretty much the whole reason I was looking forward to it.

I agree with the film makers here actually. I can believe there can be a hulk, what I don't believe in are the stretchy pants thing. So for Superman, he can be realistic but only if the rest of the characters seem believable the same way good super movies have them around their main character. For instance, I can believe Superman flies really fast, but please portray us mere humans as unable to fly that fast in open air because our rib cage collapses due to high G-Force pressure; unless Supes creates an electromagnetic field or something that can protect one person he's carrying. Stuff like that makes great super hero movies, it's the Scott Summer's Visor, something logical to make the grandiose seem real. So just because these characters can do amazing things, don't insult our intelligence and please have some realistic explanations to some questions at least. Magicians do this on stage, they always have a trick that doesn't break the laws of physics, that way when the magic happens we all go "wow".

Every interview pertaining to this film, and the precious seconds of footage I've seen, makes me anticipate it more. It looks like it'll be grounded in reality, but loaded with mind-blowing, awe inspiring Superman in action epic visuals.

What makes me most excited however, is the obvious care being put into making Clark Kent's/Superman's struggles with his place in the world and his Alien/Human dichotomies just as important as any physical conflicts he faces. There seems to be a lot of heart and soul put into this project. Can't wait!

Isn't this movie also supposed to plant seeds for a Justice League movie? If they go dark here it would seem other movies associated with it would be dark, and personally I just don't think a Justice League movie will work, let alone a dark Justice League movie.

I like the fact that they don't make this movie nor Superman too dark. It's just not who Superman is, he's not Batman with superpowers. =)

I truly hope this is the path the creators have laid out for 'MOS'. I first squirmed at the thought of a Nolan-involved film, only because of the automatically "dark" tag it was sure to reflect. It's good news that it won't necessarily have dark tones to it. The teaser trailer earlier this year had me excited, though admittedly I don't think it did much for the general public.

this whole "grounded in reality" trend that WB keeps wanting to do with their films is why imo they will never be as successful as the Marvel films

I wish I could get even a fraction as excited about this movie as any of you are, The Dark Knight was really the only of the three nolan bat movies that I thought was amazing, begins fell flat imo and rises seemed rushed through not to mention issues i felt in the editing.

I truly don't get the need for a "realistic" super hero movie. What exactly was realistic about the avengers? frozen in ice super soldier, billionaire with a flying suit of armor and two humans who could apparently be relevant in a battle alongside the hulk. Not particularly realistic but amazing because of the writing and interactions between characters then tossing reality to the side when it came for the amazing fight scenes. I don't want to get bogged down by Nolan's "real world" view because that's not what comics are about.

DC is desperate to try and match marvel's success in the movie department and has failed miserably so far (while a commercial success Nolan's bat movies will have no connection with JL franchise after all) Marvel has been re imagining concepts of there established heroes without getting into the ridiculousness of grounding anything in reality, at no point in Thor did they explain why he can control the weather and it was stronger for it. Returns was better then most people give it credit for. I see this being two hours of Clark wandering around figuring himself out before some weak rescue scene of hostages or something equally lame.

I guess I shouldn't judge with so little information out about it but I'm just not excited about it at this point and I think Nolan should go back to where he really shines, writing original movies with his brother, not trying to put his style on mainstream comics.

Marvel figured out a successful comic movie formula years ago, DC needs to get it together.

I just hope it's not boring. They shouldn't spend too much time on a young Superman as this will definitely need more action throughout as opposed to just a couple big fight scenes.

@UltimateSMfan: I think ultimately it will, there is just to much money potentially on the table for Warner Brothers to not push forward with making a Justice League film.

I think they are in uncharted territory though b/c a dark and serious Justice League film is a stretch and definitely not a proven formula in regards to a successful team movie, especially when you consider characters like Superman & Flash aren't traditionally dark. Also, if they copy Marvel's formula they'll just be considered unoriginal and rip offs.

As a character, Superman is great the way he is. Part of the reason I love him is because despite everything he's lost or how alienated he is, he maintains his position as a beacon of hope and keeps a smile on. The world around him can be as dark ad it wants, but if the character himself is "dark," it's not Superman.

While realism is good, dark isn't, Superman is the opposite of a dark character, his is the person that everyone looks up to as a role model if not exactly a leader. Any dark Superman movie would be absolutely terrible because Superman is not a tortured soul who can't deal with his power, he is a man with power who always tries to do the right thing which give an inherent "lightness" to the character. That doesn't mean he can't be in situations that are bad or scary, it just means that he will always tried to do the right thing.

Frankly I am curious to see how they incorporate this into a movie because film audiences are so obsessed with the tortured anti-hero and hate the guy who always does the right thing for the right reasons, which seems to be partly why Superman Returns failed so much.

I'm looking forward to the movie but visually/tonally it just seems so uninteresting. We've only gotten a few pictures and some footage but honestly it doesn't feel that special.

Not expecting the movie to have the same plot but All-Star Superman would be a perfect model for a Superman flick. Even if you don't think it's the definitive version of Superman, Lex Luthor etc. At least it would be something new. And Metropolis should look like the City of the Future with futuristic cars and architecture...now it just looks like Chicago or whatever the city they are filming in.

There's always the possibility. Especially since Superman Returns did just fine critically. May not have done as well with the fanboys, but no signs point to it being as bad as some think it is. In the end, this could actually get worse reviews, though I myself doubt it too, but it's possible. Of course, I'm of the mind that it was the fanboys that had the real problems with SR and if it was like Transformers 2, with all action and no substance, they wouldn't have bitched as much, because they don't seem to care about anything but "Superman punching someone".

Well they are right...the story doesn't necessarily NEED to be darker and grittier to be good but still maintain an edge of realistic or naturalism like what Goyer and Nolan have maintained. I have no doubt that many of us were worried about the story being "dark" once we came to realize Snyder would be directing, but I don't think we need to worry yet. Snyder is capable enough to know how to portray Supes without going to a dark extreme yet still using the theme of "naturalism" that no doubt Nolan and Goyer are trying to bring to the story. I have faith, and am so ready to see this now :).

I'm still excited for this movie. I think that the "naturalistic" approach that Goyer it talking about has less to do with Superman himself (though the movie definitely seems like it's going to be playing with Clark being unsure whether he wants to be Superman and have that level of responsibility placed on his shoulders, something that anyone would feel when holding the power Superman holds), but with how the world around him would react to his presence. That's the interesting thing (and the important thing) about Superman to me, the way he effects those around him. He's this living, breathing ideal. Seeing something that altruistic and perfect made flesh (especially in today's much more jaded society) would have a profound impact on the world. If seeing that is what Goyer is talking about, it has me very excited.

The trailer for this movie already had me looking forward to it. Pa Kent telling Clark that, good man or bad he would change the world and Jor-El telling him that, in time he would help humanity accomplish wonders makes me think that they're nailing the most important aspect of Superman as a concept (to me). The added fact that Snyder is directing and it seems that he'll have plenty of enemies at his power level to punch (in Zod and what's-her-face), the action set pieces should be thrilling as well.

@HannibalKing: Yeah I agree too. Look at The Last Airbender: lets put aside all of its flaws and sheer awfulness, the movie made back twice its budget despite being salvaged by critics and fans alike, permanently ruining Shyamalan's career as director and is considered by many people the worst movie ever. A trilogy is still possible if popular and fan demand have nothing to say about it.

Diane Lane as Martha Kent, and Sally Field as Aunt May. They're really going the unconventional "older woman" route these days. Two great (and beautiful) actresses in roles that probably would have been written off as less-than-ideal just 10 years ago.

I can't help but be a bit nervous about this film, Superman is my favourite superhero after all. So far though I don't have the massive warning bells going off that I had when I heard news about Superman Returns (which wasn't as bad as people on here are making out, it was mediocre), so may be I'll stick with "cautious optimism".

I think presenting a realistic world for Superman to inhabit is fine, I think it could provide a good contrast with Superman's brighter nature. Done properly, it could really show why Superman is an inspirational figure in a cynical world. Of course it can come off as cheesy as a mouse's happiest dreams if it's done badly.

I like this approach, and I think it will be a great match for Superman, but I doubt greatly if the same method can be applied to very many more DC heroes. I can't see Wonder Woman, or the Flash taking to well to this. so how they approach Justice League and those other characters will be questionable.
